Cory Morgan, 'columnist ' for the Western Standard

u/FeedbackLoopy Jun 10 '26
Well it’s a step up from ‘failed entrepreneur twitter troll’.

It’s a step down from land surveyor, which I found out when my dad saw him on the news and said “I used to work with that guy”

Alberta patriot, founding father of Alberta Republic, hero of common men and women.

People really really hate separatists. Cory Morgan and the western standard are in the side of treason.
I hope Smith gets asked about this, her answer will be very telling.

I feel like we should grant his request. He doesn’t want to be part of Canada.
We should march him down to the border, get him a one way ticket wherever he wants to go, and I’m CERTAIN he’ll be welcomed with open arms by his new country. We’d be wrong not to help.

“I heard about that, yes. An interesting dilemma. I do for one support free speech, and also understand the importance of, you know…we’re all one country, right? I hear both sides. I will say Taber corn is fantastic, and rural Albertans deserve their corn. There is much discussion to be had here. But the important thing to take away from this is how much damage Mark Carney has done to the corn community.”

Chris Scott from the Whistle Stop in Mirror is as bad.
He got his voice during Covid and learned he loved the sound of it. Total attention whore.
My misfortune is that it’s the only gas station for at least 16 kms from me, usually a few cents cheaper and even with today’s prices I refuse to go there. But he’s like a freedom trucker, an inescapable headache inducing loudmouth.
10
u/omegacanuck Jun 10 '26
Turns out grifting the entire province pays better than selling gas and burgers in a town of under 500. Who knew?

2
u/AwesomeSuaceable Jun 11 '26
Go there, get as much cheap gas as you possibly can, and steal as much chocolate as your largest coat and bag can possibly carry. Oh, and don’t forget to shit all over the restroom if they’ve got one.

u/PuzzleheadedTutor807 Jun 09 '26
Oh boy... Wait till they start babbling about first amendment rights now...
(I wish I could add /s but I really can't)

No-one is infringing on their rights to establish the province of Manitoba

Well maybe we should! How many Tobas do we need?!

We should just become Manitoba 2.0. Mr Kinew can be our premier too.

As someone from taber, I’m so sorry.
16
u/vanillabeanlover Jun 09 '26
Is separatism popular there from what you can tell? I live rural and it’s still just the regular crackpots that we knew from covid, and it’s not even all of them.
12
u/Different_Wolf_764 Jun 10 '26
I'm not from Taber, I'm a Calgarian, but I spend a good bit of time in places smaller than that.
It's just my experience of course but from what I hear, it's a small but hard-core group that wants to actually separate and by that they mean become American for that most part.
But and this is important there is a large group that thinks Alberta is getting fucked over by "Ottawa" because they don't understand what transfer payments actually are and really, really, want the Quebec treatment, which in their minds means getting money for just for bitching about things.
It's a genuine feeling to have of course but it is so very difficult to unwind or pair with reality and it certainly doesn't help when many rural people are being fed a steady diet of American right-wing propaganda.

100% agree. While these ones are also not smart, given the Quebec economy still hasn't fully recovered from the "threat", they are the ones that we can get on board if we make it real clear that the leaders of the separatist movement are not just aiming to threaten, but to actually drop Canada and try to be part of the US.
2
u/nebulancearts Taber Jun 10 '26
It's unfortunately much more popular here than 90% of the province. But it is indeed the same crackpots from COVID. I even know the guy who was running all those protests and he's for sure involved in the separatist movement. Buddy was constantly fishing for signatures.
4
u/Turkzillas_gobble Jun 10 '26
Is it true about the lube, mentioned above? This is a fascinating fact if true
8
u/kagato87 Jun 09 '26
Why? Is that clown even from Taber? He said he pit the sign there because he could afford it.
Or are you apologizing because Taber took down a seditious sign?
43
u/Plastic-Procedure905 Jun 09 '26
I’m apologizing for the amount of uneducated separatists here.
11
u/dbusque Jun 09 '26

u/Tal_Star Jun 09 '26
The article suggests the sign it's self is the issue not so much the message. Why are we giving the separatist so much free advertising?
10
u/1singularserotonin Jun 10 '26
Good, fuck all the separatists and I hope they suffer in life and beyond
1
u/9scruffy9 Jun 10 '26
You are a sad person to think like that! Maybe some peop feel the federal government's overreach and corruption motlre than you and are sick of it?! Maybe not everyone wants to sit in the cuck chair like you and watch Canada fall due to Liberal leadership!🤡

Time to boycott Dunmore next. They only have a Harley dealership, gas station, and a garden center so it should be difficult.

Cory Morgan is just an unemployed Rick Bell. He’s aware enough to not shit where he eats though. Worried what his Priddis neighbours would think about a tacky billboard in their neck of the woods.

"Send Ottawa a message" is such a danergous and disingenuous way of approaching seperation votes. People could vote thinking it won't pass (and they don't want it to) and just strengthen their province's negotiating power. Dumb way to vote.

u/Propaganda_Box Calgary Jun 10 '26
"It was going to be a quiet billboard in one spot, part of a bigger campaign," Morgan said Tuesday. "It morphed into a whole pile of attention, which only brought in more supporters [and] more donations.

Not gonna say I'm 100% on board with this (not really okay with government censorship in most cases), but I'm certainly not gonna shed any tears for the guy. I mean, if you can't get support for separation in Taber, where the heck does he think he's gonna get support?
-11
u/Sean__Gotti Jun 10 '26
You’re either okay with censorship or you’re not.

u/omegacanuck Jun 10 '26

Dumb. You don't support freedom of speech if you don't support it for viewpoints you are diametrically opposed to.

can we vote to have Taber separated from Alberta? It would be painful, but it would pop a zit on the face of alberta.
1
u/9scruffy9 Jun 10 '26
That's not freedom of expression! Noatter what side you are for, you should be worried that freedom of expression is being struck down for no apparent reason!
4
u/AwesomeSuaceable Jun 11 '26
No reason? Bud, It’s pretty much treason. It’s also dangerous rhetoric; there is a large overlap of the separatists with known violent hate groups. Plus, objectively, separating would completely destroy Alberta, so like… Idunno, seems pretty valid to shut these chucklefucks up.
1
u/ederzs97 Jun 10 '26
Not defending it all. But is this not a breach of the constitutional right to freedom of expression?
1
u/Bryaxis Jun 10 '26
"Send Ottawa a message"? That sounds like a protest vote rather than a vote for actual separation.
6
u/IpsoPostFacto Jun 10 '26
oh, it's that way for exactly the reason you note. "Hey, I can just vote to go ahead with the binding referendum. It's just to 'send' a message"
-11
u/eddiewachowski Jun 09 '26
They just don't like when people say the quiet part loud.
UCP Grant Hunter received 12,379 votes , or 75.29% of those cast.
I say protect Cory's right to free speech (freedom of expression if you know what you're talking about) and his right to spend his money how he wants! Let the leopards eat the faces they promised to!
7
12
u/AccurateExtent3961 Jun 09 '26
This does not infringe on his freedoms of expression in the slightest.
1
u/ReputationOld1912 Jun 10 '26
While I don't like or agree with the message, Supreme Court Cases have ruled in favor of billboards when they have been denied or removed because doing that violated the freedom of expression and without valid reasons like safety etc. it was deemed not to be a reasonable limit on freedom of expression. While that freedom can have limits, if the reason they removed it was the message alone and the message doesn't violate laws like hate speech he very likely would win a court case. Especially if they only removed that one ad and not the sign itself because then it is the message and not a valid safety concern etc.
-1
u/eddiewachowski Jun 09 '26
Does he know that? He'll probably argue that he has a right to free speech and the town is muzzling him!
4
u/AccurateExtent3961 Jun 09 '26
Does not really matter, he can argue it does all he wants, it won't make it true.

u/tetzy Jun 10 '26
So instead of this just being a billboard that would be seen, read and immediately forgotten, it's become a lightning-rod case of government over freedom of expression and national news.
To everyone celebrating this moment of actual censorship, this isn't the 'win' you think it is.
2
u/Feisty-Pack5158 Jun 10 '26
Like the ucp passing laws that only Canada and Alberta flags are flown on public property? ....
-8
u/JonPileot Jun 10 '26
Yeah, I don't like the message but when government is telling you what you can or can't say in public, that's a problem.
I don't appreciate the businesses or individuals in my area flying those tacky US/Alberta flags but I'll defend their right to express their opinions.
-3
u/JonPileot Jun 10 '26
A better method of activism is to contact the companies you see advertised before and after these kinds of ads and contact them, let them know what their advertisements are being shown beside, chances are likely they don't want to be associated with separatists. Get enough other brands to pull their advertisements anywhere separatist messages are being shown and advertisers won't want to show separatist propaganda.
The key difference is doing it this way it isn't the government telling you "you can't say that", it is private platforms saying "we won't amplify that message".
-1
u/diomedesbrc Jun 14 '26
Newfoundland had referendum to join Canada in 1948. Quebec had a couple on separation. Didn't see calls of "traitors!" then?
-4
u/androstaxys Jun 10 '26
Uh… this is a little weird right?
Separating is so dumb but also that billboard is someone’s free speech.
Town should not be able to order removal of someone’s political views being shared on a billboard.
This is just going to give the apes fuel for a free speech riot.
7
u/N1oma Jun 10 '26
the uneducated when they realize that Canada has freedom of expression and not free speech, and its not absolute. A judge can strike you down at any time. Section 1 defines this.
1
u/androstaxys Jun 10 '26
A town council is not a judge.
Also Canadian courts have limited free speech when it can cause demonstrable harm. Not because we disagree with the idea.
Listen, these guys are idiots. I can’t wait for all of us to slam dunk them down and I hope we get 100% voter turnout for this question.
That said, it’s not okay for a town council to limit my political ideas. If I want to make a billboard that says “Separatists can’t read this sign” I don’t think a random town council should be able to stop me.
A judge? Sure. That’s not what happened here.
Random bylaws enabling people to restrict speech like this seems fine, until it’s used against you.
1
u/WildcardKH Edmonton Jun 10 '26
People don't understand that free speech does not mean freedom of consequences.

Nahh we just have no patience for separatist scum.
1
u/Lord_Stetson Jun 10 '26
I am in no way suggesting I think Alberta seperaring is a good idea, but the sign broke no laws. If the advertising company who owns the billboard took it down - fair play. The town gov't taking it down because they dislike it is an awful precident.

This hoser is hurting the town of Taber and he’s not even from there. But it’s okay, he’s doing this “out of principle”
