Seems like he’s sugarcoating it quite a bit and avoiding a direct answer, which is his prerogative. I don’t think Roy stepped away to pursue playing tiny shows and working construction.

Fundamentally it’s none of our business. It’s tough because the music they made together is phenomenal, and it’s hard to let go of a dynamic you love and you want concrete answers, but we can’t get all parasocial with it.

Just gotta accept Roy has left the building

Why not? It's not like Alex is a huge act or something himself. His biggest track has less than 10 million plays on Spotify and the venues he plays at aren't exactly Madison Square Garden.

Edit: I'm not attacking the guy, y'all. Just acknowledging facts. He deserves to be bigger, but he's just not.

Ya it always seemed like a grind when they were on tour and not exactly glamorous

It could be as simple as Alex was connected to the Mini Mansion guys (Tyler/Zach) and it was an opportunity to try out a new core foundation in the studio for Album 5 (quite far in) that he couldn't pass up and unfortunately there's not enough money to fly in Roy and sustain him as a sort of studio spare spart. Maybe that was the spark for Roy to want to be his own man?

Sad to see Roy is no longer in the band...hope he's doing well and I'm enjoying the new album and think it's his best work since Forced Witness but some sax would have really taken it to the next level

Yeah, so he booted him.

Someone told me it was about Roy’s politics, being aired too publicly.

What are Roy’s politics?

Anti-genocide/modern colonialism

Not sure there's a huge pro-genocide / pro-modern colonialism bloc, and I don't think Alex would be upset at taking a stance against that.

I follow Roy on Instagram... he's posted a lot of very far-left, politically confused content, although he seems to have cut down on it quite a bit. One of the highlights was a picture at a protest in Australia, with a Transgender-Soviet flag in front of him.

That's also enough for someone to be denied a US working visa which also might be a reason it's not being spoke about publically

It’s big enough

Roy did post on his instagram something like “now you see why certain artists are too afraid to say these things openly” after Macklemore got booted from Ed Sheeran’s tour. It would really suck if that’s why he & Alex fell out but it seems likely

Roy boy added a lot. Sorry he’s no longer in the band

Anyone got a TLDR for someone who can't listen rn?

Friends since 6 years old, loves him, desire to do their own thing musically and work with new artists. Nothing juicy or dramatic mentioned.

Alex basically says Roy can speak for himself, same as he [Alex] can only speak for himself.

He mainly says that they’re both really proud of what they’ve created together but Roy wants to do his own music and focus on his own thing.

He says he loves him, praises his talent and profoundness, doesn’t allude to a falling out but also doesn’t explicitly state if they’re still buds or not.

If they were buds I think they’d share album and track releases of each other’s work on their IG stories.

Good interview though mate, thanks for posting!

Couple of the replies have left out the fact that Alex says that he believes that he should constantly learn new things in music and work with new people, which alludes to Roy being booted rather than leaving all that amicably.

This is really sad news. Roy was my favorite part when I saw them live in 2022
