Hello everyone!
So this album was made via an ASM Hydrasynth Deluxe and a Prophet Rev2.
This series of music I had made actually with images, or ideas and things in mind. I would find a painting (or footage) by real people, usually on Artvee, and try to make sound and music that evokes what is already there,, and tries to do so in a way that is live, organic, flaws and all.
If you want, you can check my Youtube channel, and each music in the album which you will find in the bandcamp page, will show indeed the music corresponding to a painting, or footage as in the Auora example.
As a short hand of what I tried to do with each musical piece just to give a few examples:
For Blues of Shadows, I had actually used imagery from a game called Shadows of doubt, to try and transcribe the feelings there, which sounded I realized much like Blade Runner blues :)
For Caravane Dans Le Desert, you can see hopefully on this reddit post and to the bandcamp, the music is based on the painting as shown here. I used the Prophet Rev2 to generate the long droning sound of wind and something harsh underneath, using the flute like sound as a beacon shining through the harshness.
For Aurora Australis, this one I used footage for it after making the music, not before, and it was a more drone type sound/music. Playing with the texture. I actually did not know what I would do, I was just playing around with my prophet Rev2, when I had found this sound. As I finished, the one word that came to mind was space, and there it was.
At the moment I think I am more happy with the music I am making, or at least, the way I am performing music. I had first discovered Blade Runner (1982) and fell in love with the movie, and since I already loved synthesizers, I fell in love with Vangelis' music and just wanted to understand more about it, the mindset. There are other synthesists I like a lot like Wendy Carlos (if I had discovered her first I probably would have imprinted on her, she is just as good as Vangelis for me but for different reasons), Gershon Kingsley, Jean Jacque Perrey, Éliane Radigue, and so on.
I realized early on, back when I was using computers and daws I...hated it actually lol. The whole process of making music was a pain and despite owning amazing synths in the form of a Hydrasynth Deluxe and a Prophet Rev2, I felt no motivation to play. I hated how I felt less like a musician and more like an engineer.
That was until I went dawless, and I felt so much better. As a result, all of my music is always dawless, no computers, one take, live, no edits, any mistakes left in, and trying to invoke the imagery and meaning that is already there via sound. I don't use sequencers or drum machines all that much, I don't even use arpeggiators. Like whenever I play music like this I never "plan" anything. It's like a radio, it just comes out of me. Because I do not compose music beforehand, or try to think in classic music theory, every note, every breath, every pause, and every mistake, is present. It makes the music feel...alive. It is all spontaneous for me. And I think I prefer it that way, for myself.
A lot of how I play is based on how Vangelis played, since his music always sounded so nice to me, because the music was played live to scenes. It made the music feel alive, like another person witnessing what was happening. Any mistakes I do make, I try to ride the wave of that and just seeing where it takes me.
Anyways, thank you all, and I hope you have a good one :)
I am on spotify and apple music and stuff if you wish to hear it there too.
