Support he finally did it!

apologies if this is inappropriate - i don’t know who to share this with who understands the relief and ecstasy i’m feeling currently

i (21F) have been with my boyfriend (24M) for a little over 3 years. he graduated in management information systems and a ds minor as valedictorian of his major in 2023, and has been stuck in the job application rut for the last 3 years. after a year straight of self boredom via SQL dashboards & tableau projects, he applied for MS programs and began completing the georgia tech ms in analytics degree while applying, which he’ll be done with in december.

13,456 applications later, he got the call today. incoming analyst - data science at a major fintech in new york! so proud of him, as he knows, but please don’t lose hope if you’re also stuck in the endless and seemingly unfruitful phase of wrestling with this horrendous job market. there is light at the end of the tunnel, even if you had 0 internships, much experience, or went to an oversaturated undergrad.

Congrats! I hope it didn't really take that many applications! Goodness!

Also, it may be wise to remove the name of the company, just in case.

unfortunately that number is directly from his app spreadsheet, so glad it's over. and great point, thank you!

u/ConfusedRealHuman Feb 19 '26

You sure there isn’t a join causing it to fan out?

15

u/sleepyhungryandtired Feb 19 '26

i wish. his average is around ~370 apps/month

he’s done nothing else besides course work, job apps, and projects in an ostensibly eternal loop since july of 2023. it was draining and i saw the life depleting from his face. i seriously don’t know how you guys stick through this - immense kudos

I distinctly remember crying and holding my cat telling him I’d failed him bc I couldn’t find a job. Then cuddling him and crying bc it was full time in office and my boss was the absolute worst. Then, finally two weeks ago I got a remote job making 4x my first job and I cried again and told him we did it 😂

Any tips? Currently in your old situation with the cat and boss 🤣

I wish :( I will say my first job I made 30k for 6 months just for the experience on my resume and it helped. After I had the next job 2 years it wasn’t as hard to find other things.

Sadly I am at the had 9 months at first real job (even though I would count my 3 years as a student tech as real job experience), 1 and a half years at second job, currently at 2 years at third job. Pay has went from 30 to 45 to 60. I feel like I'm currently stuck at the job that I'm at and everyone above me still treats me like I'm too green just based on our position and who is normally hired for it. I'm stuf between just sit and eat the grunt work for a couple more years while getting more certs or am I tired of this shit and want to try to move up and away now.

First off - nice!

Second off - I knew that application number wasn’t wrong since it was too specific to be made up.

God, Zeus, Satan, Buddha, please be with anyone trying to break into the field right now.

the resilience is truly testing - as someone pursuing medicine though, his patience in my journey has been tenfold. the security this news has brought to our future, even minutely is almost overwhelming.

plus my college grad gift to myself can be a trip to new york! lol

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '26

You probably have better security

As you’re probably now seeing: the ROI is there, but it is a very, very steep curve

2

u/sleepyhungryandtired Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26

it definitely is, but it isn’t net till ~2-3 years as an attending (post residency), which i’m still ~15 years away from as i’m hoping to move forward with an MD/PhD. curve gets even steeper

we are planning our future long term so him gaining financial stability currently is extremely important to both of us

1

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '26

I meant for both of you.

Keep chugging along

1

u/EmotionalAd7704 Feb 20 '26

to be fair the application number looks like 123456 but they accidentally skipped the 2 LOL

1

u/sleepyhungryandtired Feb 20 '26

LMAOO i didn’t even catch this 😭

I had a 5 minute interview with the military lol. Asthmatic

8

u/BigUps7175 Feb 19 '26

Good grief how did he find 13,456 places to apply and how long did it take to complete all those? Even at 20 per day thats nearly 2 years... lol

At that rate he's applying for too many roles and should have spent more time tailoring less applications. I've been laid off for a few months and send less but tailored more things. I've gotten a much higher success rate in getting responses. Though I have closer to 10 years in the field I am competing with many others with developed skills that also got laid off.

2

u/sleepyhungryandtired Feb 20 '26

he did tailor each application/CV as much as possible, he just didn’t know what else to do. also of course, this wasn’t solely DA roles, it was a mix of random BI, DS, marketing, etc., anything that he seemed like he could remotely contribute to. i come from a family of SWEs, so i gave him as many referrals and connections as possible but i think his lack of work and interview experience was a huge roadblock initially.

i’m really excited for him to get a feel for corporate and engage and contribute to impactful work rather than aimlessly apply to an unnecessary amount of roles for sure tho. best of luck in your search!

u/FineProfessor3364 Feb 19 '26

What the helly?? That’s kinda insane. Is he an international? Cause that’s just a ridiculous number of applications, its an analyst job - not president of a company!!

But so happy for him

we’re in the bay area so you can imagine how many thousands to millions of well qualified candidates there are, from both of our schools and beyond, no matter what position you’re applying to and where

I have been looking since 2 years, I am grateful that I am employed and looking to switch, but this gives me hope that there is some light at the end of the tunnel. As it's been a long and hard journey.

How much did the Georgia Tech master's help with employers? What did he think personally of the program? I see their ads often.

5

u/sleepyhungryandtired Feb 19 '26

what he gathered is that although it isn’t necessarily difficult to get accepted, it is difficult to keep up with. the program has a 52% graduation rate. the coursework is time consuming, as expected, but he’s really enjoyed his feedback from all the professors. not sure how much it helped specifically, as he’s had the program on his CV for 2+ years now.

humble brag (i’m ridiculously proud of him) but he does have a 4.0 and has made great connections through group projects!

1

u/Different-Leg-7303 Feb 19 '26

I’m sure it helped. Topped ranked program.

2

u/Different-Leg-7303 Feb 19 '26

This is my exact path. I have a BS in Computer Information Systems and I’m looking at GT for a MS in Analytics. Is this my sign 🫠

1

u/DampestAcorn7 Feb 20 '26

Hey maybe I should go back for my master and try to get into Georgia Tech as well!

2

u/Fickle_Perspective50 Feb 19 '26

Congrats! Your story makes me feel like I will find a supportive girlfriend like you lol

4

u/Woberwob Feb 19 '26

Wait, what on earth? How is that even possible with solid credentials?

10

u/sleepyhungryandtired Feb 19 '26 edited Feb 19 '26

he had 0 experience in undergrad and is first gen so was always told to “have good grades” and that’ll be enough. he wasn’t resourceful enough imho but is the hardest darn worker, so mostly only had personal projects, the google coursera analytics certificate, and the near perfect degree to show for himself compared to the average applicant with field experience

we met his senior year of undergrad and i come from a completely different upbringing and go to a pretty neurotic school so he graciously gave me the privilege of acting as a second set of eyes on him for his interview prep and portfolio.

there were genuinely just too many people applying to every position, even with job alerts on and meticulously stalking job postings

2

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '26

Was he employed at all during this period?

14

u/sleepyhungryandtired Feb 18 '26

he had one analytics internship at a random digital transformation platform the summer of 2023 with less than 20 employees that he got via a cold email, but aside that he didn’t land a single opportunity

received 3 other offers in the entirety of his application cycle, one asking for relocation to florida but paying $12.50 an hour for a part time role, the other a city business intelligence contract role that required law enforcement boot camp training (??), and the last offer was made verbally over phone but rescinded the next day as they said they “called the wrong person” - no referrals for positions with offers

12

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '26

Damn you are insanely loyal. I'm happy for the both of you!

4

u/sleepyhungryandtired Feb 19 '26

thank you! i love him so much and have been beaming all day. wouldn’t trade him for the world (FAANG - jk)

1

u/dialecticallyalive Feb 19 '26

How did he afford to live?

1

u/sleepyhungryandtired Feb 19 '26

luckily able to move home post grad

Do you think the masters made the difference to get him over the finish line?

1

u/trewqq0 Feb 19 '26

😳😳😳😳😳 That number is insane! Congrats to him.

1

u/Creepy_Letterhead873 Feb 21 '26

Congratulations to him! 13k applications is absolutely insane.

1

u/Long_Caregiver2639 Feb 23 '26

Congrats!! That’s a long time to be applying and took a lot of patience, he should be proud!

1

u/Human_Way_5330 Feb 24 '26

Oof should I even try I'm not a data analytics major but I feel like it would be a nice path to go to, other than idk nurse or healthcare, or sales 😵?

1

u/john-uebersax Mar 17 '26

Tell him to enjoy that first paycheck, he definitely earned it after three years of SQL-induced boredom.

1

u/No_Helicopter9361 Mar 20 '26

He deserves it

u/EducationalYak7577 Feb 19 '26

Just wow!!
