What is the major difference

I'm going to be downvoted for being honest.
Rooting will heavily downgrade the security of your phone, get refused by apps to launch, and introduce risk of rendering your phone unbootable and hard to recover, regardless even if you do everything right, but give you more control over your phone.

If you're asking this question, probably nothing much.

nothing honestly, current android is pretty open and can be tweaked however you like thanks to adb and shizuku, root provides little value and actually makes the experience worse a bit since apps detect it, especially if it's a kernel exploit root and not a custom kernel susfs root.
I did root my s23 ultra and tweaked it quite a lot, but didn't notice any functional and practical difference in performance and battery life, only noticed the stress of having it not reach 0% battery or I will have to root again.

Yeah root isn't designed, nor is it marketed as improving performance or battery life (although it can, with certain tools like an overclock/under volt, debloat, etc.)
It gives you full root access.
For a normie, yeah, this doesn't mean much. But it does enable some cool stuff, like...
1.) Freely debloat, even "protected" apps that can't be removed with ADB or Shizuku. 2.) Bypassing all hotspot restrictions without needing a special app on the PC or messing with proxy settings 3.) Ability or patch native YouTube with Morphe, to avoid installing a second MicroG services, draining battery 4.) ability to run a full Linux distro with GPU acceleration 5.) Bypassing apps like Netflix or banking apps that don't let you take screenshots 6.) Having SUI (Shizuku that's always on, so it doesn't require a separate app, or any wifi/ADB to set up or start 7.) way more stuff check XDA lol

ok, 1) adb can already debloat nearly everything without root, even installing placeholder apps over privacy invasive apps like google's safety core is possible with shizuku alone, 2) what does Hotspot have in terms of restrictions? that module I tried too but didn't know what I was trying to achieve, 3) installing morphe without microg is good with temp root, but again, NouTube is a better viable solution if you want maximum privacy without root. 4) I'm a normy on that one honestly, this is for extreme modders, 5) again, shizuposed uses shizuku and can do that without root by hooking app_server instead of system_server, 6) shizuku next can achieve always on mode by toggling USB debugging on to keep adbd active without wireless debugging active and listening ports ruining your privacy. 7) abundance fallacy

1.) Yes, ADB can debloat most apps. But not all. Root is needed in some cases
2.)Many carriers have hotspot limitations. Either in speed or data allotment (on ATT I have unlimited data, but only 100gb of hotspot)
3.)NouTube is not a suitable replacement for the real YouTube. It's more privacy-centric, yes....but it's lacking functionality. It's literally just the YouTubes mobile website version in a wrapper app. Plus, if you're phone has Google Play Services installed, replacing one app doesn't help your privacy. Google is still tracking your location, what apps you open and when, every key you type, etc.
4.)A Linux shell is simple a means to an end. A way to run PC apps on your phone, if need be. Apps like GIMP or video editing software. This isn't just for "extreme modders" just be it's PC emulation. It's for anyone who wants to run PC apps. Just like video game emulation isn't for "extreme modders" - it's for anyone who wants to run old games....also you're non-use of a feature doesn't render it inept.
5.)Shizuku can NOT achieve always on mode. You're objectively incorrect on that front. After the phone reboots, you ALWAYS need to re-enable it. Which, even if the app has the option to do this automatically in the background (like with Shizuku Next or Shizuku Plus) it STILL needs an active wifi connection to achieve that re-enable. Or the ADB command. Same as every time you set up Shizuku....with root it's not needed at all. Apps can just use Shizuku permissions....A.) without running Shizuku as a background service so saving battery and B.) Without needing wifi or a PC, so if your phone dies or reboots when you're not around wifi...you're screwed with Shizuku. Not with root.

- yes root access on filesystem is the best.
- you can check vpn hotspot with shizuku support and there is also another app called shizzi. i temp rooted just for this but i become paranoid over time due to if i'll get detected or not. shizzi working great so far.
- im using morphe as reguler app and disabled the original youtube. google can track us anyway unless its graphene os or heavily modded rom with selection of apps installed
- there is already working emulator/virtualization solutions available for both games and os'ses but performance may differ.
- most of the root users will carry 2 phones or a laptop so creating a hotspot will be not a problem imo.
honestly, i love rooting just because i can but f* droidguard, integrity checks and apps crying about root even their processes is not touched yet... i quit, too hard to keep up with updates everyday to hide it properly and some banking apps will flag ssaid so even if you unroot you'll need to format the device. I'd love to keep experimenting with temporary root on my second phone if i ever buy one, but honestly, I just don't have that same fire and motivation in me to keep chasing it like I used to...

1.) Agreed
2.) VPN Hotspot doesn't support Shizuku. Shizzi is very cool tho. Hadn't heard of that.
3.) I never said anything about Google tracking. My point was, that if you use "regular" non-root Morphe YouTube, you also have to Sideload MicroG...which mimicks Play services functionality and runs constantly in the background. Morphe will even tell you to disable battery optimizations for MicroG.....if you patch the real, stock YouTube app, this isn't needed. No need to install MicroG, therefore saving battery life. That was my claim. That's why root is better there.
4.) Idk what you mean by "both games and OS's" lol. I only brought up the emulation of video games to prove a point (showing why you'd want to emulate something) - My original claim there about root was the ability to run Linux apps with GPU acceleration. You cannot do that without root. You can run Linux with no root....WITHOUT GPU acceleration. So it's much slower.
5.) No, most root users DONT carry a second phone and/or a laptop. I mean...Im a LineageOS dev and a tech nerd, I keep my laptop in my everyday carry bag...but I don't bring it on dates, or out to the bar with friends, or to the beach, or when I go out golfing....etc. etc. etc....all places I DO have my phone tho. So no, that argument is just dumb. There have been plenty of times where I needed to reboot my phone or it dies, and I'm not around a wifi network to restore it. Unless you're work from home with absolutely no social life I don't understand this argument at all. That's your worst one by far.

Root gives you: 1. Hosts based ad blocking instead of DNS based. DNS or VPN based ad blocking don't work inside managed networks like university campuses. Shizuku can't achieve it. 2. True, exact backup of app data. Shizuku can't access
/data/datadirectory. 3. Ability to downgrade apps without losing data because of 2.Anything that requires driver access: 1. True blue light filter, RGB and gamma control like CF.Lumen that writes directly to display drivers. 2. Charging thresholds, cool down, current, voltage control using ACC. Again driver level. Shizuku can't do that. 3. DriveDroid. It can mount any ISO on the phone and make your phone behave like a bootable USB drive that you can boot your PC from.
