First Time Note Taker, subs
Oh I feel so entertained. I've seen the bus jacking scene some time ago as a clip somewhere, but watching it with full context simply elevates Light's bravado to the max.
I also like that he rejected Ryuk's eye deal. The shinigami really struck jackpot with how much Light differs from his expectations.
But I still can't help but wonder how much will killing the FBI agent backfire, because he's perfectly ready to absolve Light of all suspicion. Then again, after hearing a report like this, L might still doubt it anyway... but we'll have to see how that pans out.
QOTD:
What are your thoughts on Light saying that he is trying to create an ideal world where no criminals are left unpunished, and that as the god of such a world, he cannot sacrifice half of his life for the shinigami eyes?
He's high on his own of a mix of narcissism and god complex. But he's also somewhat logical and calculating about it, which makes for a great show.
What are your thoughts on Light tricking the bus hijacker into touching a page that was torn from the Death Note, allowing the hijacker to see Ryuk?
Maybe in a different life Light would find his calling in writing great thrillers. 10/10 cinema.

I think the series is pretty realistic about characters not operating off of perfect information. There's a lot of very impressive deductions, but it's all stuff you can understand from where they're coming from. [Death Note future episodes] There is one notable exception to that later on, but my understanding is that that's the result of an adaptation mistake. All this to say, while it's true that Light seems to have avoided suspicion, he really has no way of knowing that. Maybe Penber plans on staying for another month or significantly increasing the level of his surveillance. How long can he manage without slipping up a single time? There also might be a certain level of vindictiveness even if it's not explicitly shown; Light is mostly collected even in his conflict, but we've already seen the mask slip at least once.

Light rejecting the deal was a good twist because it adds layers to his character. He has a specific vision in mind with the Death Note.
The hijacking scene was probably the most intense scene of the show so far.

Thoughts on inhabitants of the Shinigami Realm wondering where Ryuk is?
Thoughts on Ryuk saying the Shinigami Realm is slowly rotting?
Thoughts on Light creating conditions that were virtually impossible?
What are your thoughts on Light admitting he came up with clues that have no real meaning?
Thoughts on Raye Penber?
Thoughts on there being a drug addict who killed three people?
What are your thoughts on the drug addict getting run over by a car?
What are your thoughts on Light saying Raye will be next?

Thoughts on inhabitants of the Shinigami Realm wondering where Ryuk is?
They must be pissed he went off to have fun.
Thoughts on Ryuk saying the Shinigami Realm is slowly rotting?
It means that there was a golden era of Shinigami at some point? It makes me think of a crack theory: the Shinigami themselves aren't the ones killing humans. It was always humans killing humans and we live in an era where direct human on human violence is fairly low, therefore the Shinigami aren't as needed?
Thoughts on Light creating conditions that were virtually impossible?
It was a smart way to limit test on the first try, therefore giving out less info to the L side.
What are your thoughts on Light admitting he came up with clues that have no real meaning?
Now that was very interesting, because his "message with no meaning" had a hidden message that Light wasn't aware of? Definitely a plot point we'll be coming back to later.
Thoughts on Raye Penber?
I'm sad that his days are numbered, he seems like a cool guy.
Thoughts on there being a drug addict who killed three people?
Drug addiction is a dangerous matter.
What are your thoughts on the drug addict getting run over by a car?
It was a convenient way to stage an accident.
What are your thoughts on Light saying Raye will be next?
See previous answer about Raye :(.

I dunno. I guess that's up for debate.

I said in my thoughts but this is like something out of Monty Python.
What are your thoughts on Light admitting he came up with clues that have no real meaning?
Now that was very interesting, because his "message with no meaning" had a hidden message that Light wasn't aware of? Definitely a plot point we'll be coming back to later.
More than likely
Thoughts on Raye Penber?
I'm sad that his days are numbered, he seems like a cool guy.
He's thr most honorable man we've seen so far.
Thoughts on there being a drug addict who killed three people?
Drug addiction is a dangerous matter.
So is killing three people
What are your thoughts on the drug addict getting run over by a car?
It was a convenient way to stage an accident.
Convenient lol
What are your thoughts on Light saying Raye will be next?

Watching Dubbed
I love the designs for all these other shinigami.
It’s very funny watching them just chill around doing nothing and talk about Ryuk.
Light rejects the deal. I suppose that’s a bit anticlimactic but I guess Light’s smarter than to make a deal with a weird floating pale guy.
Light saying he might have accepted wings from Ryuk is funny.
L is already figuring out that Light can determine the circumstances of someone’s death.
Light deciding to just treat these people like test subjects really just makes him seem even more unhinged.
The results of his experiments are interesting though. For as much as I like making fun of him, I like how much time we spend seeing Light plotting.
This undercover cop is really bad at his job if a teenaged boy is able to tell he’s being followed.
I find it hard to believe a weirdo like Light is able to find a date this easily.
But then again maybe he’s just so handsome that everyone just brushes aside his weird behaviors.
So did Light plan this bus jacking or is this just a coincidence? Because if he planned it he either wrote down a very complicated plan in his death note or he somehow got in contact with this guy and told him to rob this bus.
“I’m sure Light Yagami isn’t Kira” - undercover FBI agent. This guy is doing a great job.
The undercover FBI Agent’s name is apparently Ray Penber which for some reason reminds me of those fake American names from that one baseball video game.
No wonder Light noticed he was being followed, they hired a white guy to follow him around in Japan. You’d think the FBI would hire someone who blends in better.
Light’s plan with making the busjacker freak out by making him able to see Ryuk is kinda clever but also a bit overly complicated.
So everything that happened was all in his note? The note can get very detailed I suppose. I guess that explains why Light’s convoluted plan went so well.
Light seems to be planning to kill Ray Penber next. This definitely seems like a big line for him to cross.
I still cannot take Ray Penber’s name seriously.

Bling-igami is my favorite.
Raye Penber is a whole lot more reasonable than a lot of the other names we've already seen in the background and will see in the foreground later.

I love the designs for all these other shinigami.
They look cool
It’s very funny watching them just chill around doing nothing and talk about Ryuk.
Do they not know he dropped his Death Note?
Light rejects the deal. I suppose that’s a bit anticlimactic but I guess Light’s smarter than to make a deal with a weird floating pale guy.
I like how he frames it like he's doing society a favor.
Light saying he might have accepted wings from Ryuk is funny.
He's just joking. Maybe.
L is already figuring out that Light can determine the circumstances of someone’s death.
Interesting
Light deciding to just treat these people like test subjects really just makes him seem even more unhinged.
No kidding
The results of his experiments are interesting though. For as much as I like making fun of him, I like how much time we spend seeing Light plotting.
There's a method to his madness
This undercover cop is really bad at his job if a teenaged boy is able to tell he’s being followed.
Maybe
I find it hard to believe a weirdo like Light is able to find a date this easily.
Maybe it's an escort?
But then again maybe he’s just so handsome that everyone just brushes aside his weird behaviors.
He isn't bad looking, in fairness
So did Light plan this bus jacking or is this just a coincidence? Because if he planned it he either wrote down a very complicated plan in his death note or he somehow got in contact with this guy and told him to rob this bus.
He definitely planned the criminal to come into contact with Ryuk and die the way he did.
"I’m sure Light Yagami isn’t Kira” - undercover FBI agent. This guy is doing a great job.
Lol
The undercover FBI Agent’s name is apparently Ray Penber which for some reason reminds me of those fake American names from that one baseball video game.
It reminds me of a hotel name a rock and roll star would use when they're crashing for the night.
No wonder Light noticed he was being followed, they hired a white guy to follow him around in Japan. You’d think the FBI would hire someone who blends in better.
Real Peter Griffin in clown makeup in the army energy.
Light’s plan with making the busjacker freak out by making him able to see Ryuk is kinda clever but also a bit overly complicated.
I thought this was a great way to use Ryuk. He's basically Light’s Stand.
So everything that happened was all in his note? The note can get very detailed I suppose. I guess that explains why Light’s convoluted plan went so well.
Light did mention he can write out every single detail. Within reason, of course.
This was all more so to show the person who's following him who has the high ground.
Light seems to be planning to kill Ray Penber next. This definitely seems like a big line for him to cross.
Yeah, now he's starting to cross into criminal territory.
I still cannot take Ray Penber’s name seriously.
It definitely does sound like an alias.

Thoughts on inhabitants of the Shinigami Realm wondering where Ryuk is?
You'd think they'd have noticed before now
Thoughts on Ryuk saying the Shinigami Realm is slowly rotting?
It does look very desolate there
Thoughts on Light creating conditions that were virtually impossible?
Him treating these people like test subjects is kinda disturbing
What are your thoughts on Light admitting he came up with clues that have no real meaning?
So basically he's just trolling L
Thoughts on Raye Penber?
He seems like a normal guy but he also is not very good at his jon
What are your thoughts on Light saying Raye will be next?
Once again, you'd think Raye would give it more thought before killing someone who's not a criminal. At least with killing Lind L. Taylor (who he thought was L) it was pretty spur of the moment

You mean Light. But yeah, I don't disagree.

First Timer
Yeah it figures light is probably too narcissistic (he literally wants to be god) to take a deal that halves his lifespan. Well at least he's getting then idea that he should probably try to throw L off before doing anything while figuring out new horrible things he can do. Though its ironic he would have been in the clear if he did nothing so lets see if this ends up blowing up in his face somehow.

u/Holofan4life 10d ago
Stuff like Light wanting to be God is why I think this ahow is awesome in like a cheesy way. Of course he wants to be God. Who doesn't have delusions of grandeur?

the eye deal rejection is so on brand because light doesn't actually want to win efficiently, he wants to win in a way that proves he's special. halving his lifespan would mean admitting he needs help
2
u/Holofan4life 10d ago
And also he's convinced himself he's in the right. To shorten his lifespan would be a disservice to everyone else.

TODAY’S QUESTION(S)
What are your thoughts on Light saying that he is trying to create an ideal world where no criminals are left unpunished, and that as the god of such a world, he cannot sacrifice half of his life for the shinigami eyes?
Makes sense to me; He only has a few decades to achieve his goal, and if he takes the deal, then that # of decades is cut in half...
But also: While it might be too early for Light to even think about that (given he only started doing that recently, and he has other things to deal with at the moment), thinking about the whole "I'll die early so my mission will end" might raise the question of... What happens after? If he dies 70 years from now, well people will be used to 'his world' at this point, but when criminals stop dying right away, what happens then? Does Light simply goes "I'm dead, you guys deal with the rest"?
(It's kinda interesting to think about this from the perspective of 100 years from now, 1000 years from now... What will they think of that? Will it be a dark day in history? A memory of when "God passed judgment"? A myth, that less and less people believe even happened?)
What are your thoughts on Light tricking the bus hijacker into touching a page that was torn from the Death Note, allowing the hijacker to see Ryuk?
Light's showing his brilliance/scheming skills!
I was talking about it in a previous thread, about how L owned him pretty bad but it's in large part because Light didn't even know he had an opponent at this point.
When he puts his mind to it, he's pretty good at this!
2
u/Holofan4life 10d ago
I think for Light’s plan to work, he has to have no bias whatsoever. Something like the Death Note needs to be handled by someone who won't let their personal grudges cloud their judgment. Given Light is already thinking about killing Raye who isn't a criminal, he kinda already has betrayed his original point.
If I was Light, I'd be trying to work with the police task force. Try to convince them to use the book to punish the harsher criminals if there's beyond a shadow of a doubt they did what they did. And this would be all contingent on making sure I'm a free man and won't get punished.
There's a way for this book to work without being at odds with law enforcement. It actually could be an effective tool to dish out punishment, like say the criminal dies harsher deaths depending on the severity of the crime.

first time watching!
What are your thoughts on Light saying that he is trying to create an ideal world where no criminals are left unpunished, and that as the god of such a world, he cannot sacrifice half of his life for the shinigami eyes?
He finds new ways to surprise me i thoght it was a done deal
What are your thoughts on Light tricking the bus hijacker into touching a page that was torn from the Death Note, allowing the hijacker to see Ryuk?
OKAY THAT WAS HELLA SMART also super elaborate for no reason besides Aura and im here for it
---
Interesting he turned down the deal
Ryuk realizes Light just gives him a hard time LOL
Since when can Light joke
Damn the rules of the death note are kinda fire
I like how Ryuk is just a popcorn eater watching all this
Why's the FBI agent just taking orders from a teenager
Oh fuck that note was from the death note
Light just traumatized his date LOL
Why kill the detective... Doesn't that just make Light the most suspicious
2
u/Holofan4life 9d ago
I'll be curious if we see the date again. Maybe she tries tracking Kira down herself?
Yeah, I'm not sure what Light has to gain with killing Raye. Does Light think Raye is starting to suspect something? We the audience know Raye thinks Light and Kira are two different people, so what makes Light feel differently?
1
u/ItalianQuagsire 9d ago
nuking the entire FBI force was an aura moment so I guess i'll let it slide but yeah why even kill Raye to begin with

is this what people did before doomscrolling, they just hanging out and picking their noses
Thoughts on Ryuk saying the Shinigami Realm is slowly rotting?
Ryuk sounds like a Light of his own at that moment, trying to move his morals onto the others
Thoughts on Light creating conditions that were virtually impossible?
that's so smart, i really like how the rules are being established
Thoughts on Raye Penber?
i like the guy i sure hope he doesn't die

Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.
Welcome to the 20th anniversary rewatch of Death Note.
Names need not be written down.
Very few anime transend the medium it is a part of. One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Speed Racer. Those are really the four where even non anime fans know of it. I would argue there was a point in time where Death Note was like this as well where even if you weren’t an anime fan, you knew what Death Note was.
I of course have experienced Death Note through various memes and the like. I even remember checking out a Treehouse of Horror episode of The Simpsons specifically because they parodied Death Note, and I’m not even a modern Simpsons watcher. But despite being familiar with the show for the better part of almost 15 years, I’ve never actually seen Death Note. It’s just one of those things that escaped me.
I’ve heard Death Note is notorious for having a dip in quality. That with the conclusion of part 1, the show isn’t as good as when it started. This rewatch is less a matter of deciding if the show iw good or not and more is part 2 really as bad as it reputation suggests. My prediction will be no but it’ll be a show that goes from 9 out of 10 to 8 out of 10.
Death Note was at one point arguably the most mainstream anime in the entire world. And so it’s time we revisit what I’m sure got many people into anime.
With that out of the way, let’s begin.
I’m watching the dub, by the way. Because potato chips.
I'm gonna try to go to an amusement park after this. I hope it doesn't rain.
Hey, it's the God of Death world
Haven't seen that since episode 1
Everyone wonders where Ryuk is
Meanwhile, Ryuk is still in negotiations with Light.
Light seems to turn down the offer.
He doesn't want to die sooner because it lessens the length of the God of this world.
Makes sense, I suppose
Ryuk has nothing else to tell Light
Light while on bed says he'd might consider the deal if he had wings instead.
Though he admits he's just joking. Maybe.
Ryuk says the Shinigami Realm is slowly rotting.
Light argues that the Shinigami Realm is highly significant.
Gotta be a positive thinker in order to create a better world.
Light now says he's going to try to use the rules of the Death Note to identify L.
The chief and others find out the deaths are becoming more complex, including the use of a pentagram.
Wait, this guy isn't Light. Who is this?
Is this the guy following Light around?
Experimenting on his victims. Kinda like Ted Bundy.
Light now talking things over with Ryuk.
Wrote conditions that were virtually impossible, like traveling all the way to Paris.
Light is starting to Monty Python people's demises.
This will keep L and the police guessing.
Creating clues that have no real meaning.
Now Light has his eyes set on a drug addiction who robbed a bank.
Can't he have some people kill others, or would that go against his vision of an ideal world?
Light decides to call someone
Light continuing to be followed
There's the girl
She pretty
Light has some tricks up his sleeve.
The guy following Light knows he's the chief's son. He thinks he's no cause for suspicion.
If only he knew...
He's on the bus with Light and the girl.
I love the music here. It kinda has a Sublime quality to it.
The drug addict is on the bus
And he's hijacking the bus
Light gonna take the gun out of his hand.
The stalker showing Light he's a member of the FBI.
Raye Penber. That's his name.
Damn, the drug addict killed three people? Fuck him.
Wait, the drug addict noticed Ryuk?
He touched parts of the Death Note :O
And of course being a drug addict, people think he's having hallucinations.
5000 IQ
This is a great way to use Ryuk in this show.
If you think about it, Ryuk here is Light's Stand.
Raye gets him to get off the bus.
And the drug addict gets run over by a car.
11:45 as wrote about
Light wrote out this entire scenario.
Death Note never fails, claims Light.
And we end things with Light saying Raye will be next.
Overall, this is another great episode. It shows the resourcefulness of Light using the Death Note and that Ryuk doesn't have to give Light Shignigami powers in order for the Shignigami to be useful for Light. Raye gets introduced here and seems like he'll probably be the next victim, but I wonder how the woman will factor into things. Will she accidentally end up a casualty in all this?
I'd put this only behind the last episode. We continue to move things nicely with each episode feeling like a natural progression of the last one. I continue to really enjoy what this show has to offer.

What are your thoughts on Light saying that he is trying to create an ideal world where no criminals are left unpunished, and that as the god of such a world, he cannot sacrifice half of his life for the shinigami eyes?
He is a man of the people. Maybe.
What are your thoughts on Light tricking the bus hijacker into touching a page that was torn from the Death Note, allowing the hijacker to see Ryuk?
It shows how resourceful Light can be
1
u/Second_Cour 11d ago
I think the girl was just his 'prop' for getting the FBI agent's name, and getting the bad guy to touch the note; in order to create the scenario that went down. Don't see why she needs to be a casualty.
I hope that Light at least considers that killing of Raye will put Light in the FBI's crosshairs (agent investigating someone suddenly dies...obviously raises alarm bells). Would be ironic if he does kill him though, given Raye was finishing the investigation that day.

We’ve established that the Shinigami are lazy, and Ryuk is no different. We now know that a Death Note found by a human, traps the Shinigami in the human world until the end of the holder’s life or until the notebook is destroyed. So it seems like the motivation for Ryuk is to get rid of Light ASAP (or have him destroy the book). If Ryuk is indeed carrying a second Death Note, then he could also probably eliminate Light (unless there’s a hidden rule about this). So it’s unlikely Ryuk has a second notebook, or he’s having fun because Light is unhinged.
With his tests, I presume that Light is realising that he could possibly get the people he puts to death, to do his bidding for him (e.g. a person whose name he knows stabs the guy following Light then kills himself, for example). The issue with that would be that they will probably investigate the murder of the guy following him which might make the police double-click on Light.
Well, I got the idea right overall, but the plan completely wrong. Light’s plan is definitely better (that was actually pretty clever), though surely killing the guy investigating him would also raise some alarm bells in the police unit. Hope that he factors that in, or we have a plot hole.
I don’t like that the show over-explains a lot of scenarios. It’s a lot of spoon feeding and hand holding - e.g. the man seeing Ryuk because the paper was written on the death note paper didn’t need an explanation. Do we need an explanation of what went down on the bus again, too? It’s pretty obvious - let us do the work of understanding it. Show, don’t tell.
I’ve noticed that these episodes just fly by - a good sign. But I do hope that this handholding stops soon
