What’s something you experienced as a child that you still can’t explain to this day?

I wished a firefly back to life when I was about 8. I was catching fireflies in the yard and accidentally squashed one. Glowy goo and all. Overwhelmed with my carelessness I sat crying with the poor thing in my palm. The first star of the night came out and I wished soooo hard that it would fly away. Fucker flipped over, shook out its broken wing and flew off.

Normally a story like this would immediately prompt me to go to Google and find out more information about this. Are they like axolotl’s who can regrow limbs? Do they only require two wings to fly but they have four?
But the magic and whimsy of your story is so amazing that I am not googling and instead she used to believe your magic and that wish brought it back to life ✨ (<— This is my attempt at fireflies)

I have chased the magic and whimsy of that moment my whole life. Glad I could share a bit with you 🙃✨

When I was around 10 my mom took me and my best friend up to our cabin in Wisconsin in September/October. When we arrived it was nighttime, and pouring rain. It was just us three, and then my grandma, great aunt and great grandma were already there. I specifically remember they were drinking chocolate martinis. My mom joined in and basically told us to go do our own thing.
We put on jackets and rain boots and went outside with some flashlights. The rain had lessened considerably. This was truly out in the nature. No street lights, and backyards were so long that if you had motion sensor lights on your house they barely reached 1/4 of your entire property.
We made our way through the long stretch of backyard, closer and closer to the river where we had a very long pier. My friend and I were roughhousing when we stopped to realize how silent it had gotten.
It was like the rain drops coming off the trees ceased, the sound of bugs and frogs chirping stopped. We were at the foot of the pier at this point. We both shined our flashlights up to the end of the pier where we saw an old man, naked, hunched over, with long stringy grey hair. When the light hit him, his skin looked oily and he hissed at us.
We ran inside and tried telling the adults but they were sauced and told us we were fine and to lock the doors lol. Me and my best friend slept in the same bed that night holding each other tight.
To this day I do not know who that man was, or what he was doing on our property.

Do u and your friend ever talk about it now?

We did probably ten years after the fact. We were at a mural friends funeral when we had realized we were both in need of roommates. Long story short, we moved in with each other that fall. One night after a bottle of wine I just randomly looked up at her and said hey do you remember that time my mom took us to Wisconsin? I told her we should privately write down what we remember to see if our stories matched. And scarily enough, they did.

I started having a dream as a child of losing a single white Barbie shoe. I got obsessed about it. I kept bugging my sisters who assured me we never had white Barbie shoes, it’s just a random dream.
I stopped having the dream when I was playing with my daughter years later. We’d lost her Barbies shoe, and as I’m looking for this white bloody Barbie shoe under her bed I realise it’s exactly the same as my dream. Felt weird to me.

Sounds like what I call a predictive dream. I've had several. Nothing like that though.

u/Puzzledandhangry 9h ago
It sure felt like that, it was exactly the same. I wish it had been lottery numbers lol

Right?!?! Here are a couple of my predictive dreams:
- Stranger bringing my younger brother into the our house. Months later my brother fell off of his bike. The kid he was with took off 🤬 she put his bike in her car and drove him home. Saw it in my dream. Saw myself watching her from our dining room window as she drove away.
- Dreamt I was watching abc news national broadcast with Max Robinson. Saw him with a photo of Mary Tyler Moore over his shoulder. As I watched a real broadcast of what I dreamed, I learned her son died.
Those are 2 big ones that I remember, I've had others where I experience what happened and remember the dream that I had which showed what I ended up experiencing. It doesn't happen a lot and I'm on a few medications now which I believe affect my ability to have these dreams.

About 9 or 10. I accidentally stepped on a grave and felt a black mass all around me like everything went dark. Seemed to last just a second or two. I turned around and looked at the grave and apologized.

I was 7, sleeping at my grandma's house. Woke up at 3am and saw an old woman in a white dress standing in the corner watching me. I screamed, my grandma ran in and turned on the light - nobody there. Next morning she showed me a photo on the wall, it was her mother who died in that exact bedroom 20 years before. I had never seen her before. Still get chills.

When I was around 10 years old, I lived in my great grandparents house with my dad and stepmother. The grands had passed away at that point. I never met my great grandpa but I was born on his birthday. I loved my great granny though, and she favored me quite a lot.
Anyway, one night I was sitting in the kitchen, in the same seat my granny always sat in. I was making something with beads when all of the sudden, the hairs stood up on the back of my neck. I could feel eyes on me. Once I gathered enough courage, I looked up and saw a large older man with curly salt and pepper hair, standing in the doorway that lead to the dining room. He had one arm up, leaning against the door frame and he was smiling at me with an unlit cigarette hanging out of his mouth. His other hand placed firmly on his hip. He was wearing jeans and a white t-shirt with a breast pocket.
I screamed, my dad and stepmother ran in and assured me I was just seeing things.
A few weeks later, I was looking through an antique desk that belonged to my great grandparents. In that desk, I found an old drivers license. I instantly recognized the man in the photo as the man I saw in the doorway. It was my great grandfather.

I remember being in my crib under 1 year old. More so the carpet pattern which I described to my mother and she confirmed it was correct.

We moved to Cornwall England in 1980 and me and my brother ran around the house- we’d been there on holidays before.
In the back of the garden shed there was a shoe making machine. It was tied up with rope so we wouldn’t mess with it and get our fingers ripped off.
When we ran into the shed it was running by itself like perfectly oiled and clicking. It wasn’t tied up.
I said to my brother “we should go” and we ran away and forgot about it. He was five I was seven.

We were on holiday at the farm of a friend of my mother. I was about 2 or 3 years old. She and I were sitting at the top of a slope of a field with a couple of dozen chicken houses. I saw the farmer herding some chickens at the bottom of the slope. I got up and ran down to see what was happening.
At that moment my point of view changed to the top of one of the chicken houses and I saw myself running down that slope. An out of body experience watching my own physical body running down the slope.
I have absolutely no rational explanation for what happened.

Looool my grandma still drinks that.
Margarine and Sweet n Low too.
I'd prefer calories and sugar over that fake crap.

I was at a very busy restaurant once when I was like 12 and for a brief period of time I could make the overall crowd noise fade into a dull buzz and I was able to clearly discern each different table’s individual conversations. I remember a table of young women from probably 50 feet away talking about going to a haunted house that I was going to that same night. When i mentioned overhearing it and discreetly pointed out which table had been talking about it, my dad looked at me like I had two heads and asked how the hell I could’ve heard that from so far away. Ive never been able to eavesdrop from that distance and with that much background noise since that occasion

How the blue blazes a kid a few grades down knew in detail things in my home at night. And not like a hidden camera or anything, im talking like being in a dark room at night with squinting your eyes or dozing off and whispering and something weird happens and the kid accurately tells you the next day with an odd look in his eyes.

I was in the garage playing with Moon Sand. I heard low-pitched heavy breathing, got scared, and ran inside. My dad came out to investigate, looked under the cars, and nothing. I went back to playing. A few minutes later, I heard it again and I went into fight-flight and RAN inside without thinking. My parents still didn't see anything. To this day, I have no idea what it was. It sounded human or animal and like it was coming from under a car in the garage. The garage door was closed.

I saw a portal in my room at my grandma's house at night.
I cant remember the exact age but I was around 8-9-10 ish. And I remember it was a cloudy day and it was raining. I was extremely scared but I still got out of the bed and checked all the windows bc I thought "maybe its the reflection of the moon"
There was no moon in sight, hence the weather. The portal was big, perfectly round, white, and inside it it was kind of moving like water. I got back into bed, closed my eyes and didnt open them anymore until I fell asleep. I now kinda wish I tried to touch it, out my hand through it, see what happens. I can now link it to other paranormal experiences I've had all throughout my life but I still dont know exactly what it was.
There was another experience I had in her house that I legit have no clue what it was. I remember hearing this weird fucking sound. I dont even know how to describe it, kind of as if a goat was choking or something. It went on for quite a while. I remember walking through the entire upper floor multiple times trying to locate it. It was the loudest right at the entrance to my door and got quieter as soon as I moved somewhere else. I couldnt hear it downstairs. It happened during the day too and I think I heard it multiple times. I dont know if I ever talked about it to anyone tbh but it was a mystery that I will never forget.

This would have been around 1995...
Me and my brother used to stay up late and watch TV in the living room.
One night we had just settled down to sleep on the living floor when the TV suddenly turned on and it was displaying this weird green text. Similar to the old Teletext. The TV had been unplugged from the wall though so there was no way it should have even been on.
Neither of us could make out what the the writing said, but we both saw it, and we both remember it.

When I was a teen, we had a cat who was getting pretty old. Late one night, I woke up and I saw him walk past my bed. As I reached down to pet him, he vanished right before my eyes. To this day I would swear I wasn't dreaming when this happened. I'd read stories about people seeing ghosts of loved ones at the moment they died, and since the cat was old I became scared that this is what I'd seen. But no, he was fine.

When I was around 6 and visiting my Grandparents we would walk down the lane, stand next to the phone box and whistle.
Whistling would attract the special 'whistling buses' that can hear the high pitched noise and know there is someone waiting.
After a very short time the bus would appear and I would board with my Gran for a trip down the shops.
Years later and I remembered this beauty of a memory, by which time my Gran had dementia and couldn't reliably tell me that the buses werent real.
Thank you Gran for never removing this amazing piece of my childhood and the amazing magic whistling buses. RIP.
