Welcome! Please Read the Employment FAQ Before Posting Questions About Work.
We get it. You recently heard of Antarctic work, and now you've got a bee in your parka and lots of QUESTIONS!
Very cool, we were there too.
But for the love of all that is frozen and holy, please read our Employment FAQ before posting. It's a good read, I promise, and it will answer most of your questions — and many you haven't thought of!

Tourism Travel and Tourism Information
Making travel decisions can be hard! We know. That's why we offer a Travel and Tourism FAQ with common Q&As about booking trips to Antarctica.
If you need more information specific to cruises, we suggest posting in the AntarcticaTravel forum that is frequented by guides and tourism professionals. You are also welcome to post here in r/antarctica, of course, but you'll get perspectives from both fellow travelers as well as people outside of the tourism industry, including workers and scientists with experience on the continent in general, not just on the ships.
Relax. Make it fun! Everything will be all right.

Emeterm vs Reliefband
I'll be heading to Antarctica in February, and I'm thinking about the Drake Passage. I'd prefer to avoid taking seasickness meds, so I'm wondering if anyone would recommend either Emeterm or Reliefband for anti nausea/anti seasickness? Thank you in advance!

Nature China and the race to fish a tiny animal with a vast climate role
Conservationists worry krill catches will devastate Antarctic ecosystems, while advocates see a vital protein source
In March last year, the Fu Yuan Yu 9199 made its first voyage from Fujian in south-east China. The ship carried 85 crew through the Indian Ocean and the South Atlantic for over 30 days to reach the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, where it started hunting for a tiny creature: krill.
These big-eyed, paperclip-long crustaceans, with strong swimming legs and a huge appetite, often huddle under sea ice seeking food and shelter. But the ice cannot protect them from the technology aboard this industrial fishing ship.
The vessel’s suction pumps can slurp up 1,000 tonnes per day as it works among penguins and whales there to share in the feast. Older vessels worked more slowly, relying on midwater trawls and hauling and setting nets.
Six Antarctic krill vessels are currently registered from China, of which the Fu Yuan Yu 9199 is the largest and newest to have gone to the Southern Ocean. It will not be the newest for long. Yongli, from Ningbo city on the east coast, aims to make its inaugural Southern Ocean trip this year.
While Fujian’s Lianjiang county government approved the construction of a new ship, Fu Yuan Yu 9666, in June. A krill-processing industrial park in the area is expected to be completed next year.
Most krill fishers operate off the Antarctic Peninsula, which is warming at twice the rate of the global average. The majority of the animals there are dependent on krill at some level, as the creatures lie at the base of the food chain. One such is the Antarctic fur seal which was declared endangered earlier this year; krill shortages were cited as an important factor.
Some scientists say krill harvests are small enough to be sustainable if managed well. Concern among conversationists is growing, however, as the Chinese government and companies continue to pour money into catching an animal that cannot be eaten by humans without almost immediate processing.
That concern has only grown since August, when the Antarctic krill fishery closed months ahead of schedule after the 620,000-tonne annual catch limit was reached. A meeting this month will now determine what happens next year.

Work Feeling really overwhelmed with the EBI process
Not sure if it’s just me but the email has my brain all scrambled. I’m normally fairly resourceful but this seems a little confusing. Any tips? Thanks

What’s up with Meshcore down in McMurdo??? Debating whether to bring mine down here..
If you know about Meshcore, it’s a pretty cool device for communication that uses no internet connection. Although I’m wary about its range and use on ice with other sensitive infrastructures.
Can anyone shed light on this?

Request Seeking 1.5" cotton fabric square from Antarctica for a memorial quilt
Let me start off by saying I know next to nothing (besides what I've read on this reddit thread) about receiving mail from Antarctica, so I'm not certain this is even possible.
I'm hoping to receive a 1.5" square of cotton fabric from Antarctica. My son died this past July after a traumatic birth and I am making a quilt to honor him. I am hoping to have it completed by his birthday next year. I originally reached out for help in a Facebook quilting group I am part of and the outpouring was incredible. I received fabric squares in the mail from nearly every state in the US, as well as from Canada and Australia. All from complete strangers.
That got me thinking - how incredible would it be to try and receive squares from every continent for my son's memorial quilt? Just by someone thinking about him and using his name in all these different places in the world...it's like part of his soul is reaching places I never would have fathomed him being able to reach. I don't know if that makes sense. But it provides some comfort to me, thinking that in an unconventional way, he's impacting lives beyond that of our family.
If there's anyone who is in a position to send a small square of quilting cotton (is that even available in Antarctica? I have no clue), in a flat envelope mailed from Antarctica, I would appreciate it so much.

Work Packing a bidet?
Would it be crazy to pack a toilet-mounted bidet? Not sure if it would be frowned upon to mess with the toilet plumbing to attach it as well, but was packing and realized how much I'd miss having one.

Work Curious about salary.
Hey folks, a job post caught my eye and I am trying to get information about how the pay works? Any site managers around?
There's a site manager position in Palmer with a starting salary of 92,300. And the job post says the position is only six months. Would the person doing this job receive the 92,300 for those six months of work, or is it annualized based on 12 months of salary? Like, 92,300 per year is 7,691 per month, six months of work at palmer is just over 46,000.
Thoughts? And thanks in advance!
