Something doesn’t add up
How?! How are their all these job openings but they can’t hire people?? Is it greed. Is it ghost jobs. 4 locations have hiring banners but can’t fill the spots. I need work but not getting calls

It's a system that relies on SURPLUS LABOUR.
Everyone in a lower position runs the risk of being replaced by someone equally as disposable, and the pool of surplus labour is left to fight over the positions in which somebody has been sacked.
It's basically a competitive market whereby the unskilled and the desperate are forced to fight, and, almost without exception, the unskilled win. They're easier to manipulate than a desperate person that has experience.
I mean, you're hungry and probably better equipped, but you're less likely to put up with their shit than a a kid fresh off the block.

Two main reasons: They want unicorns and they want them cheap and they want them to do 3 or more people's jobs.
The third reason is the everyone else gets the 5+ years experience at entry level pay leftovers that doesn't even cover the cost of the commute and literally cannot take the job.
Fourth is indeed ghost jobs.
Fifth is the economy is sinking. Job openings are closing without notice as companies are getting hammered.
But mostly, the first two reasons.

I work at a company that over 20 years kept consolidating jobs. Now when the longevity people retire, they are baffled when they can't hire someone who is certified in accounting, certified in IT & has 20 years experience supervising both concurrently, oh & then office managing & marketing in between. They are lucky to find one with one solid quality, then complain that no one wants to work. They are millennials. It's like they think everyone comes preloaded with working software that they can just learn the other jobs. None have so far.

A big part of it is to pretend to their current/existing workers that they are "looking for replacements" and that the current suckers should just put on their big boy/girl panties and work harder in the meantime. They are NOT looking for replacements - they are lying to their workers.

How do you know they’re not hiring anyone?
Or maybe they want more than just warm bodies.

Off the top of my head:
They auto-reject you within hours.
They close and repost the same jobs (usually a month later, sometimes with a lower salary).
They just hand the job to a relative or someone in the company.

It’s absolutely greed. They’ve proven in the past that they know they overwork their employees. The “help wanted” posters are to trick you into the belief you’ll be getting help soon! They’re doing their best! But they have no intention of ever being adequately staffed.
