Orestes made my kid cried
So a short story about...
We were going in my car to buy him some ice cream, it was a nice day and kinda hot so ice cream with dad.
While we were heading down I was just shuffling some songs in the car and suddenly Orestes came out. Nothing out of the ordinary for me. At least that's what I thought... The song ends and I started to heard him weep but quietly...I ask him what's wrong? And I swear to God what he said to me shook immediately.
He said: why is he so sad? And why is he upset about? Doesn't make sense why is he so sad and make him sing while he is so sad.... O.O!
Holy sh...!
So to give you some context: he's 5 and doesn't understand english but knows some words (the basic stuff)
So I'd ask him, do you feel sad about him? He answers "daddy yes...he's sad, don't know why he is sad but I'm sad for hearing him being sad."
After some talking with him about that... I discovered that he feels that song it's different from others songs he heard before, in his words "lovely but sad". Which for him, made him confused...
So..
I've cried many times at this song and seeing him cried without not knowing english....left me powerless and in shock for a little bit.

Have him listen to gravity and see how he feels about that

Agreed. Ever since I heard the story of the overdosed boyfriend discovered by his girlfriend to the song playing, I can't hear it and not ball.

This song leaves people weak and powerless ;) Honestly my favorite track of theirs. Live at Red Rocks is my favorite version of it. Hoping they play it for their show there next year.

That’s what I came here to post, if he liked the studio version, the Stone & Echo version is even better!

Left you weak and powerless?
You’re raising a wonderful, empathetic human being. Great job, Dad!

I always say Mer de Noms is the saddest most beautiful record ever. Able to pull you down into the abyss if you let it. I really want to know who hurt Billy as he wrote most of the album and his solo album has the same vibe. Someone really damaged that man.

What Normal Was is a highly underrated album, Beautiful Mistake really tugs on the ol heartstrings

This is beautiful. As an empath myself, I was 10 when a song first brought me to uncontrollable tears that I couldn’t understand. Your son feels things strongly. Continue to give him a safe place to feel and discuss those feelings.

Music is a powerful form of communication... even if you don't understand the lyrics, whether that be due to an inability to grasp the context of the lyrics or a language barrier. If you're open to it, you can still feel every bit of it. That's a pretty amazing story.

Orestes was the first APC song I ever heard at 14 years old and I swear it’s a core memory for me. I wasn’t listening to the lyrics at first, just the music and his voice. It moved me to tears the first few times then when I paid attention to the lyrics….floodgates. It’s still my all time fav song of any artist. Tool is #1 and APC is #2
Edited to add I’m soooo happy for you and your son! Yes it’s a lovely and sad song (perfect description) but so powerful and your baby boy felt it all, zero words needed. Just an incredible moment for you both.

Beautiful (unmedicated) moment for so many reasons.
Your son is getting older and developing the awareness that we can feel multiple emotions at once. Maybe also learning that music is a general outlet for all emotions, happiness, sadness, anger, and all in between. And maybe wondering why would we cry at something beautiful. Amazing.
And you got to share a song with your son.

🥰
Also, now that we are talking about it, "Eat the Elephant" is missing a track with this kind of emotion, isn't it? Or did I forget about it (them)?
Multiple that channel indignation and anger. Maaaaybe "the Doomed" if you dig into the lyrics, but it isn't very clear from the melody and vocal quality like Orestes.

You’re welcome! That song and the Humbling River have the same vibes as Orestes and 3 Libras and Gravity for me. Love them all!

I find disillusioned hits pretty hard. some absolutely beautiful lines in that
Lie supine away with your back to the ground
Dis- and re-connect to the resonance now
You were never an islandUnique
Voice among the many
In this choir
Tuning
Into each other
Lift all higher1

This was also due to the EDM hype music trend at this time, hope the new album goes back to Mer De Noms vibes

I hope this starts his lifelong love for all things MJK.
Hopefully you can get him to a show at some point t before he calls it quits.
It was a goal of mine to take all of my kids to see him and I am so glad I got it done!

Yeah I never impose my music tastes on my kids unless its an upbeat one. I had a pretty miserable time when I had to medicate listening to APC

This is a sick story, he probably made a core memory that will shape his music taste. 10/10 parenting!
