Rumor OLED MacBook Pro Won't Get M7 Chips Until Late 2027
https://www.macrumors.com/2026/10/15/macbook-pro-m7-late-2027/Apple is "pretty much done" with M6 chips, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reiterated today on his podcast. Apple debuted the M6 chip in the Mac mini and has plans for an M6 iMac and entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, but the company is not planning to make M6 Pro, M6 Max, or M6 Ultra chips.
Apple will instead go from the M5 Pro, M5 Max, and M5 Ultra to the M7 lineup. The upcoming OLED MacBook Pro models will use the same M5 Pro and M5 Max chips Apple uses in the current MacBook Pro models, with no chip upgrade planned until 2027. The M5 Pro and M5 Max came out in March.

M6 Pro just joined iPhone 9 and Windows 9 in the Hall of Skipped Numbers.

You know what, m8? I will wait for M8.
Joking asides, M8 will be the chip to have DDR6LPDDR6 which should have double memory bandwidth, resulting in major performance upflit for everything, specially graphics and AI tasks.

Apple uses LPDDR, and in theory they could use LPDDR6 with the M7 lineup. (Idk if they will, but it’ll be well into mass production)

Yea lowkey I was thinking about m7 as the gen I will upgrade from my M1 Max but with these increasing prices and my old MacBook still working well I might as well wait another year

When they announced the M6 Pro and Max were cancelled in lieu of "rushing" to M7 Pro/Max I always expected it was actually just a cost-cutting measure in light of extreme TSMC demand. With this update it looks like there is zero rushing at all and they are sticking to their routine schedule.

Usually the Pro/Max chips are a few months after the regular version, so launching the M7 Pro/Max next fall would be ahead of their usual schedule.

M1 Pro / Max October, 2021 M2 Pro / Max January, 2023 M3 Pro / Max November, 2023 M4 Pro / Max November, 2024 M5 Pro / Max March, 2026The M7 Pro/Max at the end of next year would be right on schedule if, prior to the supply chain disruptions and inconveniences, the plan was:
M5 Pro / Max November, 2025 M6 Pro / Max November, 2026 M7 Pro / Max November, 20271

But then bear in mind the regular chip schedule:
M1 - November 2020 M2 - June 2022 M3 - November 2023 M4 - May 2024 M5 - October 2025 M6 - August 2026Only the M3 Pro/Max launched alongside their regular variants. Everything else was months later, so I don't think M5 Pro/Max were ever intended to be November 2025, and I wouldn't have expected a hypothetical M6 Pro/Max until spring.
(Of course, there's a bit of variation in general, such as M4 launching so soon after M3, or M6 launching before its equivalent A-chip.)

Maybe they're trying to bring the models into sync? I always found it strange that they would release the base model processors before the Pro/Max ones since it meant that for several months if you bought a Pro/Max psychologically it felt like you were getting an out of date processor. It would make more sense to release the Pro/Max first and then the base model later although really it would make the most sense to release them all at the same time.

Makes me feel a bit better about the M5 Pro I just bought. I don’t think I need an oled display and to pay so much more for it. If it’s the same price I’ll feel bad

Bought an M5 Pro refurbished from Apple in mid-June and was a bit nervous the timing was bad. Looking back, I appreciate it every single day. It’s more than enough power for work. The only thing is gaming (TF3 now and then), where it gets loud and hot pretty quickly. Anyone got tips for that?

i wonder there they address burn in with oled aside doing some shift of the pixel specially the static images like top and bottom panel

What? iPhones/ipads/and especially Apple Watches already have OLED screens. Apple Watches are 24/7 static OLED screens. This is not new tech to Apple.

There’s obviously a lot more going into it than this, but their decision feels targeted to drive up sales. Get a big tranche of people upgrading for the new body, then a year later get the rest of the M1 era holdouts to upgrade because YoY performance is +40% since we went from M5 to M7. I’m not mad about the strategy, just rationalizing.
I’ll probably be buying the base 16 OLED M5 Pro model on the used market after the M7 models comes out and the price drops.
