I’ll be clear here once again… Text Adventure Studio is an example of AI-assisted software development, not AI-generated creative content.
I believe that distinction is important, particularly in a community dedicated to creativity, programming, and preserving vintage computing.
AI-assisted development is increasingly common throughout the software industry. Major companies such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and established game development studios incorporate AI into their programming workflows.
Understand I am none of those industry big-wigs - I’m just one guy trying to have some fun and share that fun.
Using AI as a development tool does not automatically diminish the originality, effort, technical complexity, or legitimacy of the resulting software. What matters is the purpose of the application, the decisions behind its development, and the quality of the finished product.
Text Adventure Studio was created over the last six months with a very specific goal: to make it possible for people who may have wonderful ideas for text adventures, but lack programming experience, to bring those ideas to life on authentic vintage computing platforms.
The application does not simply generate a game from a prompt.
Users must develop their own stories, design their rooms, create objects, establish relationships between locations, define actions, and determine how their adventures unfold. The creative process belongs to the person building the game. Text Adventure Studio simply provides the tools to translate that creativity into a functioning adventure.
The technical side is equally important. Producing working BASIC programs for platforms such as the Apple II, Commodore 64, and TRS-80 is not as simple as generating a few lines of code. These systems have different capabilities, limitations, memory constraints, and implementations of BASIC. Creating functional disk images, including Apple II .dsk and Commodore 64 .d64 files, introduces additional challenges.
These exports require actual testing, debugging, and validation. AI assistance does not eliminate the need to verify that the resulting programs function as intended. Throughout development, human testing and feedback have been essential to identifying problems, correcting behavior, and improving compatibility with vintage systems.
I have never attempted to conceal the fact that Lovable.dev assisted in developing Text Adventure Studio. I see no reason to. It is a development tool, just as modern IDEs, compilers, libraries, frameworks, and increasingly AI coding assistants are tools used by developers around the world.
There is a meaningful difference between asking AI to create something for you and using AI to help you build something that enables other people to create.
Text Adventure Studio exists because I believe the creativity and enthusiasm surrounding classic text adventures should remain accessible to new generations. Someone who has never written a line of BASIC should still have the opportunity to create an adventure that runs on a real Apple II or Commodore 64.
I fully respect communities that want to protect human creativity and discourage low-effort, automatically generated content. I share that concern. But I also believe we should be careful not to confuse the tools used to develop software with the creativity and effort of the people who ultimately use it.
My hope is that Text Adventure Studio can be judged by what it actually does, the opportunities it creates for aspiring adventure authors, and the games people produce with it, rather than simply by whether AI played a role in its development.
The purpose of Text Adventure Studio is not to replace human creativity. It is to make human creativity possible for more people, on machines that helped inspire generations of programmers and game designers.
