Discussion Various moments on the new Fontaines DC feel Arctic Monkeys inspired

• Upvotes

I know the lads are friendly with the Fontaines fellas and they both use producer James Ford, so the connections make sense.

There are three moments on the (excellent) new Fontaines album "Dopamine Chamber" that made me think of the Arctics.

  1. "Happy For You" feels like their take on "Do Me A Favour" - a breakup song sung from the perspective of the person wanting to end the relationship, and its a moody song that builds up to massive riffing guitars at the end. It's awesome, and as "Do Me A Favour" is my favourite song it really works for me.

  2. "You Miss Me" includes a line "You wanna go to sleep and never wake up" with the second half of the line sung almost identically to "You wanna sleep in a city that never wakes up" from Old Yellow Bricks"

  3. "Japan" has a chorus that sounds like it could be on the Submarine soundtrack or in the latter half of Suck It And See

Discussion Arctic Monkeys albums as the Seven Deadly Sins

I started this a while ago in anticipation of AM7 but never shared it with anyone, and never got around to officially placing The Car after it first released. Now that I’ve sat with the album for some time and have another boring desk job, I figured I’d finish it and see what anyone else thinks about my little deep dive! So without further ado!

~
Whatever People Say I am That’s What I’m Not - Gluttony
Favorite Worst Nightmare - Wrath
Humbug - Sloth
Suck it and See - Pride
AM - Lust
Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino - Envy
The Car - Greed
~

Whatever People Say I am That’s What I’m Not - Gluttony

So my reasoning for this pairing is based on a few things. One is the lyrical delivery. We all know that one of Alex Turner’s signatures is his lyrics. He’s got a kinda wordy style, even in his earlier works. I think that the wordiness combined with the quick garage rhythm of this album gives it this sense of “maximalism” or “fitting a lot into a small space”. This is also the case with the titles of both the album itself and the tracks. The other reason is that with 13 tracks, this is their album with the most songs! Sounds pretty gluttonous to me!

Most Gluttonous Song: You Probably Couldn’t See For the Lights But You Were Staring Straight at Me

Other Considerations: Wrath (on account of the fast-paced energy, in which case, Perhaps Vampires is a bit strong would be the most wrathful)

Favorite Worst Nightmare - Wrath

For FWN, the darker sounds, subjects, and high-energy tempos make me think of wrath. Especially on songs like Do Me a Favor (“The last fuck off might be too kind!”), Old Yellow Bricks (“She was enraged by the way that the emperor put traps in the cage”), and This House is a Circus (the whole instrumental). Plus, with songs like Teddy Picker, Fluorescent Adolescent, and Do the Bad Thing, the lyrics have a bit of a bitter, sarcastic edge to them. And of course, the title itself, Favorite Worst Nightmare, just feels like rage.

Most Wrathful Song: Do Me a Favor

Other Considerations: Pride (they have a lot of that youthful “I can take on the world!” edge for this album, I feel, especially on songs like Fake Tales of San Francisco, Teddy Picker, Old Yellow Bricks that I feel encapsulate pride as well)

Humbug - Sloth

Humbug was one of the first pairings I made for one reason and one reason only: stoner rock 🍃💨. Now I believe that any song is a smoking song if you’re smoking the right weed and in the right headspace. But for me, Humbug is my fave record to kick back and blaze to. Now for the actual content, most of the tracks are in minor keys and expand on the dark sounds of FWN. Then we have lyrics which bring up more of this hazed-out imagery like “my propeller won’t spin,”  in Dance Little Liar “just like those fibs that pop and fizz,”  the breakdown of Potion Approaching from 2:07 - 3:07, in The Jeweller’s Hands, repeated motifs of sinking and drowning… And the cover itself with the double exposed (is this the right term…?) Matt creates a trippy ghostly image.

Most Slothful Song: The Fire and the Thud (it’s just such a chill lazy vibey song that just straight sucks you in with that gnarly guitar at the end.)

Other Considerations: Lust, there’s also some pretty horny songs on here (Dangerous Animals, My Propeller; even if it isn’t about not bein able to get it up, I find the bassline and the idea of needing someone that desperately quite sexy; Potion Approaching…)

Suck it and See - Pride

SIAS was a little tricky. But I settled on pride because it feels like their “growing up” point, if that makes sense? They strip back the heavy instrumentals, the literary devices get more surreal, whimsical even,  while the subjects get more mature and introspective. The title itself is very British. Alex even said while working on the album that he’d used more English colloquialisms than ever. Then after choosing the title, they decided to go with something very plain for the artwork. Of course I believe that the guys have always taken themselves seriously as musicians, if that weren’t the case why would they do what they do in the first place? But SIAS feels like the album where they really started honing their craft into something timeless. Don’t get me wrong, I def consider their early work timeless as well, but like I said, SIAS feels like the moment they stopped being “those kids from Sheffield.” Idk, or maybe I’m just thinking too hard to make this fit my narrative, either way, there’s my explanation!

Most Prideful Song: Suck it and See

Other Considerations: Sloth, considering the more low-key nature of this album, instrumental and visual wise. (In which case, Love is a Laserquest is the most Slothful)

AM- Lust

This was probably the most obvious, and it’s actually the third pairing I made (after FWN and Humbug). But yeah, those sexy basslines, Alex’s rockstar croon, the themes of fame, partying, situationships, drunk/high texting, the band's look during this era with the leather jackets and slicked back hair. The album oozes lust.

Most Horny Song: Do I Wanna Know?

Other Considerations: Gluttony, for how they went full LA rockstar aesthetic for this album (I Want it All being the most gluttonous of course)

Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino- Envy

This was another tricky one, as I was also considering pride for this album, but in the end I decided that envy fit the narrative better. First of all, starting the album out with “I just wanted to be one of The Strokes, now look at the mess you’ve made me make,” instantly paints an image of this bitter has-been, which the rest of the song continues beautifully. The narrative continues with One Point Perspective, showing us this imagery of a young dreamer full of hope for what could be, sung in this kind of biting tone. Then the rest of the album continues with the singer down this path of excess, superficial relationships, frivolous technology, only to end up with a sense of regret and nostalgia for a “better time” in The Ultracheese. “Oh the dawn won’t stop weighing a tonne, I’ve done some things that I shouldn’t have done, but I haven’t stopped loving you once,”
In my interpretation, the narrator is envious of their younger, more innocent self, who could hope and dream without the bitterness of reality hitting them with what following those dreams truly cost.

Most Envious Song: Star Treatment

Other Considerations: Pride (I feel like this explanation can also apply to pride? Especially taking into account the saying “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” again, that imagery of a star witnessing his death, “I launch my fragrance called Integrity, I sell the fact that I can’t be bought”)

The Car- Greed

The Car was by far the most difficult to place because I’d started this before the album came out and every other pairing was set 😭But after a few listens and 3 years to sit with it,  I decided to pair it with greed. My reason for this was the classic, 60s glam vibe the music brings to mind. Mirrorball, Body Paint, The Car, and Hello You all have these grandiose orchestral climaxes that sound like a Bond soundtrack. The entire first half of the album paints an image of quiet wealth, in Sculptures there’s the image of “gallery walls, marble stairs,” the title itself of Jet Skis on the Moat, in I Ain't Quite Where I Think I Am there’s the “retina scan” (advanced security for the rich party guests) and “the Riviera”. I’ve always thought of this album as a more grounded sequel to Tranquility Base, and these songs are what The Martini Police perform in their setlists twice a day, four nights a week (easy money~)

Most Greedy Song: There’d Better Be a Mirrorball (For the dramatic, maximalist production combined with the literal demanding title, There’d Better Be a Mirrorball”)

Other Considerations: Pride, again… 😭 (in which case Hello You, or Big Ideas would be the most prideful)

So yeah, those are my placements for Arctic Monkeys albums as the seven deadly sins. What do you all think? What would your placements be?
