What happened at the Nintendo Store opening event today?

I went by the EB Games on Yonge today, but the line was too long and I had to go.

If anyone was there, what happened? Was there an actual celebration? Giveaways? Special appearance? Or was it just the first day that the store opened and nothing notable?

There were 50$ and 100$ gift cards if you bought a new console or 200$ worth of switch 2 games basically

The vast majority didn't care or even know about that based on what I saw in the lines, they simply came to see the new thing in town, and if there was a plushy, a single video game (I mostly saw/heard interest in preorders for the new Ocarina of Time) or perhaps a trading card game pack they'd pick something up for the road lol

Toronto's favorite pastime: waiting in line for the thing that everyone else is waiting in line for to get a duck lips picture for Instagram

I lined up this morning and left with some pokeball plushies for myself and a mario themed bag and Blue Yoshi Hot Wheels toy for my nephew. I got a 50% discount (not sure about video games though). The majority is Switch 2 related with some older switch joycons on sale. Pokemon and Kirby plushies each got their own wall and I'm pretty certain I saw a Funky Kong figure hidden away in the corner. You can also play some of the newer Switch 2 games (Mario Kart World on a large screen and two more I couldn't see). The second floor has some TCG products (mostly Pokemon but scant YuGiOh and MTG) and you can get either a Mario Kart or Mario themed card pack from the cashier.

The store was kinda a disappointment. I was hoping they would have exclusive Nintendo Toronto shirts like the other stores have saying the city on them. But they had nothing. It was mostly just plushies and figurines you can always get.

So not like Nintendo World in Japan, it seems. I hope they eventually do something more with the space, like hosting events, tournaments, or livestreaming Nintendo Directs

The lines are too crazy for the modest deals

It was meh. A long line to get in and nothing really exclusive in there to buy beyond a couple large Pokemon plushies. Nothing else that you couldn’t just buy from Best Buy, Walmart, or any other EB Games. It looks nice, but feels hollow.

What they SEVERELY undersold though was the new card shop area upstairs that also opened today. You get there via a hidden door on the side at the store entrance. Not much there yet and it primarily serves as a break from today’s chaos downstairs, but I see a lot of potential there once they finish the events section.
