I love dogs so I’m genuinely asking what specifically is unethical about this breed? I know bulldogs have a lot of health and breathing problems, just curious what issues are specific to this breed?
Considering the breed today appears like it just looked inside the Arc of The Covenant I'd say breeding or buying this "show" line is unethical. Just look up common medical conditions for the breed.
Both eye entropion and ectropion would be a first. Skin infections and mobility impairment from the wrinkles, joint and hip dysplasia, cherry eye, heart issues. Imagine living your life with skin that wrinkly. I think I'd rather have no legs.
Dogs with a lot of skin folds tend to suffer from sensitive skin and frequent yeast/bacterial infections. That dog is grunting like he doesn't breathe well and has closed nares (nostrils are slits and not holes) the dog is also not able to keep its eyes open consistently.Â
Just looking at it, I can't be sure, but if I had lips like that I would probably struggle to eat or drink.Â
A dog like that already suffers a shorter lifespan due to its giant size. And a dog with a lot of loose skin often suffers from connective tissue disorders. I'm sure there are other conditions as well that are breed specific but just about every dog is prone to something.Â
Here's the thing you are under the impression this dog was breed to look like that when a lot of dogs just come out a certain way. This is a Neopolitan Mastiff and that's a standard look. That dog is not struggling at all. I own large Dogs and some of them have loose skin. They don't struggle to eat or drink.
As for skin and yeast infections a lot of that is caused by not cleaning your dog. Majority of owners that go for this type of animal understand the responsibilities of maintaining their pet. I see tons of small mutt dogs with skin infections as well. Every breed has some underlying issue that can occur.
Yes large dogs serve shorter life spans and so do large people. Should we make sure larger individuals are no longer breed to increase life span? Lastly my experience the difference between a large dog and small dog towards the end of their life is vast difference. Larger dogs tend to pass quicker its not drawn out for many years as little dogs.
You may not like larger dogs. There personalities is what makes them great. I you may not like breeders either but breeding needs to exist to keep the breed alive. Overall its preference. Large dogs are fun you should try one as a companion
I do but sometimes in forums it’s helpful to ask a question about the topic because people come to forums to read comments and find information, several people have provided great context in the thread about this that wouldn’t be here if I didn’t ask the question.
Always confused by this take, if nobody answered I would’ve just googled it for myself but the point of this app is information sharing no?
No these haven't. Look up what they look liked 70 years ago and tell me that if you saw the two side by side you'd honestly say that they were the exact same breed.
These are like the flat faced breeds, so fucked over by breeding for "fashionable" traits that their health conditions are like the Hapsburgs.
