Travel What are the worst, most hideous, insecure places?

Hi! Just finished a lovely vacation in Switzerland and I had the most wonderful time. Granted I visited all the basic tourist places (Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken and the Jungrau region, Zermatt, etc.), I always felt extremely safe and enjoyed all the views, even when walking alone late at night or through basic suburbs.

So my question is, and just out of curiosity because I’m obviously not going to those places: what are some of the most horrible, insecure places / areas / cities in Switzerland? I’m assuming there must be, no country is perfect.

Sorry if it is a silly question, lol.

Insecure?

Try some mountain slopes when it has been raining hard.

I feel very unsafe when I'm there.

Another nice idea: summer, warm, and you start at a bivouac while it is dark. Last time I did this, I went ahead 50m of my colleague, prepared the rope, put on my helmet, and just some hours later, he took this photo of the back of my head: https://i.imgur.com/hfHzQXo.jpeg (Visp hospital, went there by Air Zermatt).

So now I feel a bit insecure whenever I have to cross under steep walls with lose rocks.

Wew, you fell down or the rock fell on your head?

I was waiting for him, but instead the hill behind my neck arrived. Was knocked out for 30 min, my colleague put on an isreali bandage on my head, and then we waited until the sun came up and Air Zermatt came in.

Without a helmet (which got totally destroyed) I would have been dead. So I only had a partially broken neck, skull fraction and had to be stitched together with 20 stitches.

Glad you survived bro.

That's kinda scary, I always hike without gear, would've been splattered in your place wew

Since then I am always wearing a helmet while riding my e-scooter. Hitting the street while going 20+ can have a similar impact, I am pretty sure.

Second this. A glacier in shorts and crocs?

Crocs actually have a surprisingly good grip, speaking as an alpinist and from the experience 😜

Can confirm. They have better grip on ice than you would expect

But you wear socks with it I suppose?

Else wouldn't you feel cold?

lol I actually wear crocs for climbing approaches. Not on ice though

Most places are absolutely fine. Sometimes there are random annoying “gangs” of kids. If you’re ready to stand your ground and repel them you’d be fine, they are not as violent as in some other countries.

Bahnofstrasse in Zurich. So many financial criminals. That’s scary!

Train stations where they sell alcohol at 9 PM. Homeless-ish people gather there to get drunk and aggressive.

Same as in other countries: suburbs of the major cities. That said, Geneva basically exported those to France, and the Zurich ones are still mostly okay, with only occasional violence. The other cities in Switzerland are too small to have real danger areas.

I would avoid trainstation Stadelhofen in Zurich after midnight. It's probably not unsafe in general, but if you're drunk and looking for trouble you might find it there.

I felt unsafe in Montreux, it was late evening, in spring. And I usually feel very safe in Switzerland. I guess it is because I visited mostly the eastern side.

😆 I’m from Montreux and that’s just absurd. But OK.

Sometimes the Vevey or Lausanne train stations are kinda sketchy. Montreux is not.
