Stereotyping isn’t helpful. I have a flag on my car because I served in our military and I love the people of this country and the country until I die. I believe in unity, freedom, and caring for others. We have more in common that we do different.

u/First-Ad-7855 1d ago
Exactly. Flying a flag should not mean anything. The people behind it and the values they carry matter the most.

Vet here. The entrie GWOT was for nothing. A waste of fucking time and lives. These politicians don't give a fuck about the troops lol. People are fucking stupid and can't think for themselves. Do you really think Nancy Pelosi or Marco Rubio would let their son or daughter go to CENTCOM and eat sand for 15 months & be in harms way!??? NO! They send their kids to Ivy League schools & teach them the stock market. The military is just the poor fighting the rich white mans war. Simple as that.

u/EADGBecause 2d ago
So well said. Reminds me of a James McMurtry song called We Can’t Make It Here Anymore. He says: I can see them all now, they haunt my dreams, all lily-white and squeaky clean. They’ve never known want, they’ll never know need, their shit don’t stink and their kids won’t bleed. Their kids won’t bleed in their damn little wars and we can’t make it here anymore.
4
u/coitus_introitus 1d ago
McMurtry is so gifted. He's got the same extraordinary talent for rolling a whole political essay into five gorgeous, melancholy minutes (and then turning around and devoting the next five to something cheerfully goofball) as John Prine.

The country is great. It's just that the people who obsess about flying flags are usually the least patriotic, and usually openly advocate that they hate most of the country.
Patriotism isn't flying a flag. Patriotism is building up and improving your country. Not just on a national or state level, but especially in your own neighborhood. Making things better.
Which involves bringing your community together, EVEN IF your neighbors are immigrants or trans, or gay, or not your political party.
Anybody who says that another American is their enemy is NOT PATRIOTIC, no matter how big the flag their house has or how many flag and eagle motifs their truck has.

So why don't you proudly wave it instead of letting it be taken over by someone else?
If you can't even raise your nations flag in fear that you'll be demonized by your own supporters then that tells me that you're more into division and purity tests. Then loving your country.
This is not just a US thing either.
In the UK and Australia if you raise the national flag you're seen as "far right" being patriotic and loving your nation is now far right. That's more disturbing to me.

No. I just assume that the person feels pride in our country, and I am glad to see the flag flown. Only in the circle-jerk that is Reddit do I see people going through this though process where it is assumed flag=MAGA and then MAGA is derided as whatever comes next....nazi or some other ridiculousness, then the Reddit "yeah, and..." starts and everyone piles on.
I assume pride in country and don't attach other labels to the flag. I know patriotic coservatives, liberals and independents who proudly display our flag and see the country as much more than some political movement that has been around for a short time and will be gone in a couple more years.
Sadly, the idea of "Make America Great Again" could have been awesome if the leader of the movement hadn't handled it so poorly.

For the folks saying, “I’ll keep flying my flag,” nobody told you not to, and I’m pretty sure you’re all smart enough to know that.
But yeah, there was a time when you could safely say the person flying that flag probably believed in this country and the Constitution, and that it applied to ALL Americans. Now they just as likely believe the Constitution only applies to people that look right, or talk right, or dress right.
God forbid someone come here (legally), but not lose their accent, or still dress in their traditional clothes, or sometimes slip into the language they spoke their entire life before they moved here. Those people? Well, the people I’m talking about barely consider them people, let alone fellow Americans, so yeah, I get exactly what OP is saying.

Not at all
I grew up with a flag in every class room. I never associated it with people on a personal level because the flag has always been about what is represents, and its ideology's.
It was suppose to be freedom, justice, and liberty that I always thought people adored, and cared for. It was a symbol of new beginnings for so many migrant workers, and their family's who came, and died here. Never once did I care for the capitalistic side but its the capitalism that also brought people together, and brought forth a era that was needed for so many people.
Men representing the flag don't always align with those ideals. That's just how the world works, unfortunately. I have always looked at the individual first, and only then I care for their causes.
edit: I lived on a military base for the first two decades of my life as the son of a man who once served. I ALWAYS saw so many people showing off the flag for personal gain growing up. I didn't understand especially when I was a child but after recognizing the greed in people I see that clearly.

I've always found excessive flag-waving embarrassing...no matter where in the world.
As a "team" designator at international sporting events..I get it.
National holidays...I get it...
But otherwise..just not really.
American here born and bred, but lived for some 25+ years in Germany. Truth be told, if I was told I had to lay down my life for any country, I'd probably choose Germany over the US. But you know what...I would still really hate to see the over the top flag waving there in Germany that is common here in the US.
2
u/stargazer777 2d ago
I 100% feel the same way. It's wild to me that during the aftermath of 9/11 the flag had such positive, unifying associations for me. But now it just has a completely sinister vibe. Someone overtly displaying patriotism means they are likely a White Nationalist and all of the yucky thjngs associated with that (racist, misogynist, homophobic, transphobic, xenophobic, etc). If I see someone with US Flags on their property, cars, clothes, etc, I will avoid them like the plague.
2
u/MuchDevelopment7084 2d ago
I only come to that conclusion if the flag has been desecrated with some political nonsense or other.
Or is surrounded by right wing propaganda. The 'god, trump, guns' type bullcrap. Sadly, a lot of people in my area do just that...is disheartening. Although they are slowly disappearing.
2

I absolutely think this. I used to think “oh they’re a patriot” or “oh they served or have a family member that served”. But now it just makes me wonder how they feel about LGBTQ+ rights, women’s rights, voter suppression, the Epstein files being released, grabbing women by the pussy, insurrections, taxes, ICE lawlessness, calling yourself a lawyer when you didn’t pass the bar, christian nationalism, white nationalism, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc. THAT’s what I’ll never forgive Trump for - he changed the context of my own flag for me. Once this is all behind us, it’ll probably change for me but for now, this.
2
u/Repulsive_Fox9018 2d ago

2
u/UrSpecialHaunting244 2d ago

u/Vice-Admiral_Louis 2d ago
I Hate the government. I hate the absolute twisting of American ideals to further political agendas. In my experience those who fly the American flag rarely take an objective look at the direction the country is headed under both Democrats and Republicans. Both sides are attempting to gain power over the other no matter the impact on the people. At the moment that flag, a flag of the federal government doesn't represent a flag for the people it represents a flag for power over everyone which is against American ideals. I would not be caught flying that flag.
2
2
u/Background_Cod_5737 2d ago
For those of you struggling to know what's happening here, feeling this way doesn't mean you hate the flag. Feeling this way doesn't mean you hate America. There's just a lot of people with extremely regressive stances and they tend to be the most passionate about waving the flag around. Unfortunately, patriotism is starting to be very closely associated with blind exceptionalism and nationalism. It's associative conditioning, not hating America.
We know the founding principles of America, I bet we can all pretty easily agree on most them. What's happening in our country right now is profoundly un-American. A lot of the people waving the flag around don't seem to understand that ..

I’ve been flying my flag on the house that I’ve lived in for 30 years. I’m not letting the orange menace make me remove my American flag.

The flag is a symbol of a nation
This particular nation is a global empire run by some of the richest people in the world, that has invaded, bombed, slaughtered millions, and very obviously supports genocide.
Also, you live in the US, why do you need to fly a US flag? To remind Americans that you're an American?

Democrats hate this country so much that the sight of a US flag causes them pain.

You know what’s sad? I see bots posting the same ai generated image over and over again.
