Discussion What is your fav reverb plugin beside Valhalla?
I mean Valhalla is a fan favorite but anything better then that which is more powerful and versatile like Valhalla
45
u/Fraunz09 Sep 14 '26
Magic 7 by far the best free reverb. Better than most paid too!
6
u/thicc_as_a_bricc Sep 14 '26
seconding this, great plugin, not always the best but when it’s right it’s just right

u/xanderpills Sep 14 '26
Magic 7 is just Bricasti M7 impulses that have been available for quite a long time for free, but yep, they’re good.

u/randofreak Sep 14 '26
I used Arturia LX 24 before this and Magic 7 has been better for me. It might just be that I found my way to something that worked faster though.

For a free option, Reaverb with the Bricasti M7 IRs available as a free download from Samplicity. Felt a bit silly about all the money I spent on paid reverbs when I discovered this.

This is a good option. I like Seventh Heaven a bit more, but it's hard to beat free.

I don’t know if it’s more powerful but I use a good amount of H-Reverb. It’s pretty easy to use and I get some great sounds from it.

I don’t understand “besides Valhalla” . It’s always Valhalla.

Are we talking about Valhalla vintage verb?
I've never actually used it myself but it's always the top answer. Why is it so good?
Isn't it modelled on a particular hardware unit?
5
u/reddituserperson1122 Sep 14 '26
Vintage Verb. Room. I’ve never used one of their products that I didn’t love. No they’re not modeled on anything specific. They just go for a vibe. I don’t know how to describe why they are so good except by using words like “musical.” Their products are incredibly musical and just sit beautifully in the mix. I know that’s unhelpfully vague. The plugins are only like $50 each. Just buy one and play with it.
3
u/Salt-Ganache-5710 Sep 14 '26
I've only used the free Valhalla stuff but, now I think about it, they're excellent and I use them a lot.
Should probably have a look at their paid stuff!

That’s because that’s what VintageVerb is supposed to sound like. They have different reverbs for a reason. Saying you don’t like Valhalla because VV doesn’t work for you is like saying you don’t like pizza because you don’t like pineapple.
7
u/SR_RSMITH Sep 14 '26
Little plate is enough for me. And when it’s not enough, Space designer scratches the itch

u/Compay-Segundo Sep 14 '26
Stock Logic reverbs. Arturia. I don’t have many, what’s special about Valhalla?
4
u/Spede2 Sep 14 '26
Algorithmic reverbs live and die by their - you guessed it, algorithms. Valhalla VintageVerb has basically a version of every single noteworthy algorithm ever heard in another algorithmic reverb. That's why it's often considered the final answer to all things algorithmic reverbs.
3
u/peepeeland Composer Sep 14 '26
The hidden legacy GoldVerb in Logic is also excellent, btw. 25+ years ago, it was one of the first reverbs I used that could give a realistic 3d sounding effect. It’s very interesting, because a lot of the room shapes are bilaterally asymmetrical, which is pretty rare as a default setting for a reverb effect (which adds to its realism, as it can imply a non dead center listening position in a room).
If I could choose only one reverb to use it’d be Space Designer, but I suppose IR is kiiind of cheating, due to being exceedingly versatile; especially Logic’s implementation. Logic’s settings for even a single IR can allow for a world of possibilities.
2
u/Compay-Segundo Sep 14 '26
I mainly use ChromaVerb, but Space Designer also works very well, and Quantec too. For me, the biggest heureka moment was learning to set the predelay with any reverb.
3
u/peepeeland Composer Sep 14 '26
Dunno if you’ve explored it, but- in Space Designer, you can adjust the size and perception of the space (Size and Length settings), as well as the fidelity of the IR (Quality setting). From even one IR, there are many sonic possibilities.
3
u/CD2020 Sep 14 '26
Just has that vintage vibe. You can get to the same sound with other verbs. VVV just gets there like immediately, imo.
3
u/reddituserperson1122 Sep 14 '26 edited Sep 14 '26
All of their plugins just sound amazing. Room and Vintage Verb are just cream. I dunno what to say. I don’t use a ton of paid plugins. I find the stock logic ones get the job done a lot of the time. But I could not live without the Valhalla reverbs.

Ableton reverbs.

u/paralacausa Sep 14 '26
The stock convolution verbs are outstanding
1
u/SCUMFXXK Sep 14 '26
i was just about to comment this. that convolution reverb pro is so good. literally the only reverb i love because there’s just an infinite amount of sounds you can get from it
1
u/Spede2 Sep 14 '26
One of the reasons why people prefer algorithmic reverbs over convolution is due to the modulation effects the former have.
If you use a convolution snapshot from an algorithmic reverb, do you couple it with some kind of modulation? Is that a thing? Do people do that?
1
u/SCUMFXXK Sep 14 '26
Well the thing with the convolution reverb pro in ableton is that it already has modulation capabilities.
According to Ableton’s website it has “extended tweaking options such as EQ, damping, modulation, and more”. I always tweak it and prefer it slightly over valhalla, but that’s just my workflow specifically.
But I do wanna know what kind of modulation you’re talking about?
1
u/Spede2 Sep 15 '26
Oh yeah, that sounds like it's already been covered then. Most older algorithmic reverbs have some inherent modulation built into the algorithm itself. Change the algorithm and you change the modulation. VVV allows the modulation itself to be tweaked within the plugin in a similar vein to how you'd have modulation module after the convolution reverb.
Theoretically there ought to be a difference in modulating the reverb as it's being created versus after the fact. In practice though I suspect no one's gonna come and tell you "hey, you modulated it wrong" :D

I know everyone hates Waves (for good reason), but RVerb is one that I always go back to. I love having the EQ right there in the plugin. Throw it on an aux and mix to taste, and it just works. Hall 2 and Plate are my go-tos, with a little pre-delay.

Altiverb is my absolute tops, and very much the opposite of Valhalla: one plugin for all styles, and CPU heavy😂 so I mainly use the two as complementary options.
I also really love Revibe II but it's PT only so not for everyone.
AKG spring from UA if you have the DSP cards (wish there was a native option)
Everything from Sonnox Oxford suite is good and that includes their reverb!

MTurboReverb. It’s as versatile as a reverb can get, allowing you even to write your own algorithms and has tons of other options. And the sound quality is just great.

u/terkistan Sep 14 '26
I surprisingly get a lot out of Baby Audio's two reverbs, Crystalline, a clean and powerful algorithmic reverb, and Spaced Out, which combines delay, reverb and modulation and is great for lush, shimmering, cinematic sound.
I guess I like combo plugins because I also like Klevgrand's Røverb which combines a simple reverb with a complex delay.
I sometimes reach for United Plugins Biverb, a double-reverb plugin that has Spring, Room, Plate, Chamber, Hall, and Shimmer, and which can be split as M/S, left/right, quiet/loud and low/high (It has a sister dual delay plugin called Pluralis with the same type of functionality.)
I recently got BLEASS Shimmer reverb and am looking for uses for it. Same for Eventide's Temperance Lite. Sonible's Learn:Reverb is pretty interesting and easy to slap on a track to see what it's AI-based algos suggest (then permit user tweaking).
Reverbs I have but rarely reach for include Melda's MCharmVerb and MConvolutionEZ, Cherry's Galactic Reverb, U-He's Twangstrøm, Zynaptiq's Subspace, Vienna Symphonic's Synchron Stage,

OrilReverb. It’s pretty much the only reverb I’ve used for over a decade and it goes on everything. It’s old, it takes almost no system resources to run, it’s easy to use, easy to customize, and it always sounds great in a mix. It was made by a guy named Denis Tihanov. And it’s free. Just find it and get it. I still can’t believe it hasn’t caught on after all this time.

Try the new Valhalla Future verb, really impressive, expensive sounding. I think it’s their take on a TC6000. I use the Relab 6000 a lot too. If you have Blackhole, upgrade to the Immersive version. It’s designed for surround but is stunning in stereo as well.

Awhile ago there was a plugin called "Drip" (also branded as "Secret Sauce"), I'm sure most of you all have seen it at some point. It's got some neat stuff in it, but the only thing I kept it around for was one reverb preset called "Drop". It was the most amazing reverb I've ever heard. I used it on damn near every song.

I basically hate all reverbs, even the valhallas of which I own a few. They make everything sound shrill and horrible to me so I just see them as a necessary evil and generally I try and use room sounds instead (which I know is technically ‘reverb’) because it sounds much warmer and more natural to my ears.

Seventh heaven (lately I’m into the chambers in there for vocals) UAD EMT 140 I love on vocals, UAD EMT 250, Altiverb (usually the big Akg spring in there for things like guitars and b3, sometimes multi mono for panning away. Sometimes the fender reverb in there placed right on the track and blended in like you would an amp, and I’ll sometimes use Coll’s living to put multiple acoustics in the same space). UAD rmx16 I love on bgv and sometimes pianos and once in a while for 80s drums.
I have a bunch of other ones but these are really all I use these days. Once in a while I’ll break out the oceanway if it’s some crappily recorded drums to try and give the illusion that it was done in a proper room, but that’s rare.
Wow this sounds like way more verbs than I thought it would be but a lot of times nothing gets sent to various ones. They’re in my template along with a shitload of greyed out ones in case I want to do something different. I swear my mixes don’t sound all soupy

I like using non reverbs to smear sound, helps keep it more unique. Changing the update speed and threshold freezes on a spectral manipulation plugin like unfiltered audio spec ops for example smears the sound super well, using large buffer sizes in granular synths and having them slowly update with something like crusher X, taking something like paulxstretch and resampling the huge smear into something more similar to the original with a ton of artifiacts, and fft bin scrambling with something like Andrew freeman’s bin scrambler which makes the spectrum constantly re arrange itself
