News Indian-origin man in Australia arrested for stalking woman, threatening to access government databases

https://www.connectedtoindia.com/indian-origin-man-in-australia-arrested-for-stalking-woman-threatening-to-access-government-databases/

An Australian public servant of Indian origin has been arrested and subsequently denied bail by a court in Canberra for stalking a woman and threatening to use government databases to obtain information about her and her family, according to media reports.

Suyash Sinha, 31, was arrested on Tuesday, October 13, following a police raid on his home, the state-owned ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) News reported.

Sinha appeared before the Australian Capital Territory Magistrates Court on Wednesday, October 14, where Special Magistrate Lucinda Wilson refused his bail application, saying the risk to the complainant’s safety and well-being was “too great,” the report said.

Sinha, who became an Australian citizen last week, is accused of stalking the woman, whom he allegedly met through a dating app in January, the Region Canberra news portal reported.

Sinha allegedly continued messaging the woman after she rejected his advances. In August, he described what she was wearing while she was shopping at a Coles supermarket in Canberra, saying he was there too, the report said.

The woman later agreed to meet Sinha at a pub to ask him to stop contacting her. During the meeting, he said he worked in finance for the ACT government and named one of her siblings, claiming that “anyone could be looked up in government systems,” it said.

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is a self-governing territory of Australia that contains Canberra, the national capital.

The woman subsequently received multiple friend requests from different social media accounts with intimidating usernames and approached police in September, according to the news portal.

Prosecutors told the court the woman was terrified and experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, ABC News reported.

The prosecution opposed bail, arguing that Sinha was fixated on the woman and could endanger her safety or interfere with evidence and witnesses, the report said.

“He’s fixated on this person, and he’s refused to accept ‘no’ as an answer to his advances,” the prosecutor was quoted as saying by ABC News.

Special Magistrate Wilson told Sinha the woman had never expressed interest in a relationship with him in the 10 months since he first contacted her.

“But you did not give up. Ever,” Wilson was quoted as saying by the Region Canberra news portal.

Sinha’s lawyer argued against the “allegations” and said that the accused had no prior criminal history and had been financially supporting his family members in India and his brother in Canberra, the news portal said.

Sinha has been remanded in custody, with the case adjourned to November 4, it said.

Wild we let non citizens into state / government roles though. I always thought citizenship was a requirement for public service.

There will be a royal commission into it one day. Seems like it is ripe for espionage

And they'll find nothing just like all the other toothless RCs.

u/broadsword_1 7h ago

Hey now, they'll probably find a couple of things and then not do anything about it.

It used to be! 😡

Meanwhile so many corporations offshore our call centres and give many foreign workers all our personally identifiable information.

It's wild that it happens so much for banking - I'm surprised that there isn't legislative measures to force those sort of things to be handled within country.

I understand that neither side wants to piss off the banks, but it makes their "Look out for scams!" initiatives fall a bit flat.

As an Indian origin man myself, this guy needs to lose his citizenship, banned from Australia and deported back to India. All permanently ofcourse.

12

u/Dramatic-Lavishness6 13h ago

Exactly. It's unfair, but they put you good ones in a bad light.

12

u/Maribyrnong_bream 11h ago

It depends on the audience. Do you see white people acting like cunts and think that it put white Aussies in a bad light, or do you think that perhaps every group of people have their shit cunts?

4

u/tastychaii 10h ago

Every group has rotten eggs

5

u/Puzzleheaded-Mix5848 10h ago

Especially as a large sample size. Population is 1.5bn. In any high population just a few % bad means millions.

7

u/False_Collar_6844 8h ago

every group has shit cunts but some groups are made to suffer more for their shit cunts than others.

5

u/dirtypaz 7h ago

Terrible take. Jesus, are we still living in the 1980s?

This is no more reasonable than thinking that all white modern Australians should be judged by the actions of Brenton Tarrant or Martin Bryant.

We need to move beyond the xenophobia and identity politics in this country.

u/charlies_brain 7h ago

By that logic, we should deport and ban all people from same origin or skin color when any crime is committed? Even the white Australians? How far back can we go to account for these crimes?

1

u/NoWaterNoLuna 4h ago

Anyone with dual citizenship is ripe to lose it. put them on a plane and never see them again

1

u/charlies_brain 42m ago

He cannot be a dual citizen. He Australian now. What then?

1

u/Alchemist2905 3h ago

Yes we should... duh

1

u/ScrOatMeaal 33m ago

Yeah we should. Most countries impose this type of restriciton on visa holders. Earning a citizenship only 1 week ago is laugable

Which countries deport a citizen when they commit a crime?

Public servant... Citizenship last week... And Australians can't get jobs?

26

u/Le9gagtrole 15h ago

Have to fill those aps4 roles!

99

u/West_Independent1317 15h ago

Serious question.

When applying for citizenship, people go through a process and make a declaration that they understand their rights and responsibilities.

Pledge 2: From this time forward, I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people, whose democratic beliefs I share, whose rights and liberties I respect, and whose laws I will uphold and obey.

What happens when it is discovered that they were dishonest in this representation?

If someone cheats on their university exam, and it is discovered later, their awarded degree can be revoked.

For those that are shown to have been deceptive in their declarations and pledge, by breaking the law for example and not respecting the rights and liberties of others, why is citizenship not revoked?

Of course this could not apply to Australian born citizens as they could not knowingly and willingly and make this declaration.

104

u/fairyflosssss 14h ago

His citizenship should definitely be revoked.

I don’t think you know allot about the Indian community in Australia. While it is diverse, it is overwhelmingly conservative and right wing, particularly the hindu community.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/number96 11h ago

I don't think it works that way. It's not a credit card or something, after he became a citizen of Australia, he was no longer an Indian citizen so he would need to go through the process of getting the Indian citizenship back before Australia could get rid of his Aussie citizenship. I think..

24

u/infrasound 14h ago

Most Probably hired by other Indians working at that job. They're always hiring their own kind and ignoring others.

24

u/b0xaa 12h ago

This is a major part of the problem.

5

u/stockist420 7h ago

“Always” is stretching this a bit. As someone from India in a hiring position not a single of my hires is from India. Ive hired an isreali ex military, a guy from palestine (Not in the same team and not the same time), french guy , women from sri lanka and nepal. And no srilankankas and nepalis do not like to be clubbed with Indians. I know for a fact that that happens, saying it happens always is when you venture into the racist terrority. Same as saying every pedophile caught here is white. Not that I gaf what glasses someone wants to wear.

2

u/CanadianControlsTech 4h ago

Not to be a dick, but this still doesn't look that great when you mention not hiring a single Australian, tbh.

1

u/stockist420 4h ago edited 4h ago

All of these individuals were Australian citizens at the time of their hiring ! The female from Nepal was a second generation Australian. If the argument is none are White Australian who are 3rd gen or before, sure. But I mean the interview panel was literally white australians and me. And my opinion was one amongst a total of 4, so it wasn’t a brown guy hiring other brown people (israeli dude has a british accent and looked british). Also these CVs are shortlisted by hiring companies who are preferred suppliers and those guys are def. 3rd gen plus aussies. I mean yes there are biases but a thai massage place hires thai masseuse, a vietnamese nail spa has mostly vietnamese employees etc etc. The problem at the moment is the volume of immigration that was allowed from India, that’s messed up the balance a lot.

1

u/CanadianControlsTech 4h ago

Oh, you should have clarified then that they're Nepalese Australian. I don't care what colour they are, tbh. I just thought it was pretty poor argument you were presenting as a defense. It's cool to see the diversity with some homegrown in the mix.

This guy may have only come to the attention of authorities because he openly told the woman what he could access. It makes you wonder how often similar abuses of access go undetected.

I personally know public-sector employees who have access to databases containing sensitive information about members of the public. I've repeatedly heard employees brag about being able to look up or track people using nothing more than a name or other identifying information.

The issue isn't simply that government employees have access to these databases. It's whether that access is strictly limited to legitimate work purposes, whether unauthorised searches are reliably detected and whether there are meaningful consequences for abusing it.

This case highlights a broader privacy and accountability concern: how much protection does the average Australian actually have against someone with authorised access to government systems who decides to misuse it? Having privacy laws on paper is one thing, ensuring that sensitive information cannot be casually accessed and abused by insiders is another.

2

u/Low-Temperature-6962 8h ago

They may be able to review his past system accesses. That's not the same as being able to review evert access as it is performed, but it still provides de-motivation as this story is publicized.

u/ArJay002 16h ago

Citizenship should have a cooling off period. Fuck up within that cooling off period, or you're convicted of a crime you committed pre-citizenship, you should be outta here.

28

u/West_Independent1317 15h ago

Based on the article, it sounds like they did commit an offence prior to obtaining citizenship.

Why does the final step of the process not include a declaration of no serious crimes committed, and a clear and unambigious statement that if they have committed any serious crimes that they would forfeit their citizenship?

21

u/Davorian 16h ago

I mean I get it, but that's what the residency period is essentially for anyway. If you introduce another "cooling off" period these chucklefucks will just wait longer and it will be much less humane to deport them after they've been established here 10 or so years.

He should just be punished according to our law, and if we think it's not harsh enough then we should change it 🤷.

25

u/ArJay002 15h ago

I don't think it's inhumane to deport an adult, who was not born in the country they reside in if the crimes they commit warrant it. Whether it be 5 months or 50 years.

I don't think it should apply to people who moved here before turning 18, because our society is somewhat responsible for the way they turned out.

But if they came after 18? They chose to move here and become a citizen. It's what they signed up for. We have enough of our own home-grown crime and shit people, we shouldn't have to tolerate any more. If they don't like our laws, they have plenty of time to pick somewhere else to live.

9

u/Davorian 15h ago

No the whole symbolic point of citizenship is that we treat them as one of our own, country of origin being largely irrelevant. The only exception to this to my knowledge is if they knowingly abet a foreign power (ie treason). This is why we make them earn it with time and economic value and have a whole ceremony and everything else associated with it.

You can either (a) extend the residency period, (b) remove non-birthright citizenship altogether and just have "permanent permanent residency", or (c) prosecute them according to domestic law like all other citizens.

Birth citizens commit crimes too. People are flawed. It doesn't mean "they don't like our laws". But if you are in the business of granting citizenship at all, once they pass the criteria we accept that risk like we do with all the people born here.

3

u/ArJay002 14h ago

What about (d), subclass of citizenship for overseas birth, where relocation to Australia happened after age of 18.

If you go to any country, and make life worse for other residents of that country by committing crimes, it should be completely acceptable for that country to remove you.

2

u/Davorian 12h ago edited 11h ago

Sure, but this is just something I fold into "permanent permanent residency". You can certainly do that (and possibly there are some countries that do) but whatever you do you need to make this class of belonging formally different to birth citizenship in the interest of clarity and fairness and so everyone understands where they stand under the law.

If Australia wants that then it needs to be made law. Zeitgeist would certainly support it I think.

8

u/Specialist_Kale4607 15h ago

It does. If he is convicted, the Department will send him a notice of intention to consider cancelling his citizenship on the basis that he was not of good character at the time his citizenship was approved

5

u/SpicySources 15h ago

I support a cooling period of 5-10 years

1

u/Ok-Concert7018 12h ago

Funny how 99.999% would agree yet it doesn’t happen… this is how we know the system is corrupted

1

u/Entilen 12h ago

The problem is we're competing with other countries to get as many of these people in as possible while pandering to the actual citizens with slop like ON to pretend there's real political movement to stop so many from getting in.

They make getting citizenship easy because they want them to come here and not Canada. Cost to the existing citizens be damned.

1

u/Benjisc2 15h ago

I agree with the sentiment, but practically, if an applicant gives up their previous citizenship for an Australian one, and we remove the Australian citizenship, what would you do with them?

2

u/ArJay002 14h ago

They can go seek asylum somewhere else? Should've thought about that before committing a crime.

1

u/Chewiesbro 12h ago

I doubt anywhere would take them with a criminal record, especially à stalking involved one.

That being said, for arguments sake they get let in, in their home or a new country, all they’d learn is that they’d need to cover their tracks better.

How is a man a public servant and not a citizen.

Absolutley absurd.

15

u/PjT7994 15h ago

I literally didn’t even think that was possible until today

1

u/Gladys_Wines 13h ago

You have to be a permanent resident on track to citizenship. Has been so for decades or maybe forever?

1

u/PjT7994 13h ago

Genuinely did not know that, and there’s several other comments similar to what I said. Many people seem to think public servants require citizenship

1

u/protonsters 13h ago

Never heard of that. Usually it's show us your citizenship and then you can work.

1

u/Gladys_Wines 11h ago

I was in the federal public service. Worked with a couple of non-citizens who were PR. It was allowed but you definitely had to be PR working g towards citizenship. This is in 2010s feds. States might differ..

3

u/Vivid-Fondant6513 11h ago

Yet another thing we were told wasn't happening yet happened.

But the answer is that they get in via contract recruitment routes or they target state services.

An example - Services Australia has allegedly been using contractor firms such as Chandler to hire people for their call centres, as SA doesn't employ these people directly there is no need for these people to be citizens or have permanent working rights so they can get as many Indians in as they want as they aren't SA employees but Chandler contractors.

Of course once they are in the door, they do everything they can to abuse the system because they now have access to it.

1

u/Extra_Response6136 14h ago

Most APS roles only require a baseline AGSVA

1

u/agnci 13h ago

It’s possible, I’m a public servant and they ask for your country of citizenship when onboarding you, only for high end stuff like ASIO do you need citizenship

1

It should be citizen for anything general, and Australian born for jobs related to national security.

The more hate the more we divide. Thats what politicians want. when in reality a lot of issues are rooted in government policy and projected onto a marginalised group

We see how that's being turned on citizens everywhere it exists

And if it was a white british immigrant, they'd be deported instantly (objective fact)

I'm pretty sure that you don't know what "objective" or "fact" means based on this statement.

If this guy was white, bogans would be buying him a beer at the pub for "sticking it to feminism" and "messing with Albo"

u/PjT7994 15h ago

Crazy that you have to invent a fake scenario to defend this fucking creep.

Yeah no… pretty much anyone would think this is extremely weird behaviour mate. Have you ever been let out to a pub by your carer?

10

u/MeecheyRandle 15h ago

If you had left your basement and attended a pub you would realise this statement is utterly stupid

1

u/Nut-Buster99 14h ago

Mate I own pubs so I know this first hand hahaha

u/Playful-Zombie7403 14h ago

If you could do a job and have a work ethic , they might hire you for public jobs. This person should be deported , so does every white shit who does a crime on this soil

Indian media used to report on "Indian origin" figures who were really good at chess or something. This stuff must get more clicks.

1

u/Vryl 15h ago

Ok. Do the headlines read "White Australian {did hideous thing}" when the time comes or is it only non-white ethnicities that get this treatment?

Asking for a friend.

8

u/Paceandtoil 14h ago

The fact that he is a foreign national who was using private information that he had access to via his federal government employment to commit a crime and was granted citizenship only last week makes his origin very relevant to the story.

Stop rage baiting.

u/Aggravating_Bad_5462 15h ago
