Game Review Request Review request (9 Kyu)

I played as Black in this game. As far as I can tell, I played a solid opening. Nevertheless, I fell behind quite early on and couldn't catch up. I would therefore really appreciate your feedback.

KataGo thinks that you were within 4 points of white at move 180, but you played S13 a few moves too late and white was able to save their group in the top right...

There are plenty of tactical mistakes but I'd like to focus on your game flow, starting with move 53.

Not only is there a vital point at j16 that both players want, Q14 violates the golden rule of go: "Play away from thickness"

Black is strong in the area and so is white. Black ends the sequence in gote and profits like, maybe 5 points? It is really bad.

Black then commits a similar sin at move 61, growing a tiny area where Black is already strong.

Again there is a vital point at E8 that both players want, but even without that, the best place to play (the place with the least thickness) is around the L4 stone.

Black should be attaching at K4, or maybe going for N2/N3 or J3. Any move white plays in the p7 area just doesnt threaten Black, which is why Black should not play there themselves.

After moves 63 and 65, black has spent many tempos trying to grow an area where they are already thick, and white can just reduce from the outside and win easily.

Theres a lot of moves left in the game but at this point the position is strategically lost for black.

Play away from thickness and hit me up for more casual reviews if you want.

I'm not strong enough to give you a real review, but I'll share a few of my observations and maybe one or two will be interesting. I thought your opening was a bit passive and allowed White to take initiative too easily. In the opening, especially as Black, you should try to hold onto initiative and play fast. My observations mostly fit into: a) direction of play, b) pressuring your opponent, c) "what is this move doing?", and d) follow-ups.

Move 15 - This is fine, but I'd personally prefer a corner enclosure from Q16. The left side seems smaller (or harder to develop) than the top & right sides. This also adheres to the corner -> side -> center heuristic. More of a stylistic choice.

Move 27 - Here, I think Black should've followed-up locally at E8. Because it's an important point for both players in terms of developing their own potential and restricting their opponent's potential. White's potential on the bottom side absolutely needs to be addressed (and became a HUGE pain point for Black), and if White had played E8 immediately after O17, surely you'd agree it's sente. (follow-ups)

Move 31 - R12 would put more pressure on White. Because it'd contest White's base. Not sure what Q10 is doing exactly. (pressuring your opponent)

Move 35 - I don't understand what this move is doing. It doesn't seem to pressure White much and E8 still seems more important. Even if White had responded immediately, the Q11-R12 exchange would seem favorable for White. (all categories)

Move 41 - I don't understand what this move is doing either. The top side seems less interesting than White's looming potential on the bottom. This is a good example of "allowed White to take initiative too easily". (all categories)

Move 53 - I don't see the urgency here. Letting White get the J16 follow-up is too painful. It allows White's M17 invasion to become a stable group making points. J16 would've been better to keep the pressure on White. Or if you wanted to ignore, E8 still seems huge. (follow-ups)

Move 59 - Here, I think Black must hane at E8. It's a necessary follow-up because if White gets E8, White is developing bottom-side potential AND attacking Black at the same time. In terms of local shape, maybe E8 directly instead of D7 would've been easier. (follow-ups)

Move 61 - This helps you secure an already-strong group. So I think the idea of reducing White's potential is OK, but the left side is more urgent and a better place to start from. (direction of play)

Moves 63-67 - These seem a little slow.

Move 95 - A critical moment. Black is behind and cannot afford to play slack moves like this. Connecting at K8 seems necessary to go for the bigger chicken. (pressuring your opponent)

Move 155 - When you play a move like S18 and your opponent ignores, I think it's worth considering an immediate follow-up. I mean, if you didn't have a follow-up prepared, why play there? It was a great move by the way, and you likely could've killed White and won the game.

I'll leave it there. Hopefully that helps and maybe a few stronger players could add on to some of the ideas.

Thanks for your help. I think you are definitely strong enough to provide me with valuable input.
