Guys marathon is happening and you will be stuck for a while. Avoid until at least 12:30pm

I'm sad that either BDOT got rid of their social media person or they stopped posting because of all the bitching they would get on here. 3 months since they last posted on reddit or discord.

Probably the people who are aware of city events, read the million posts here talking about it, and those who remember that this is a yearly marathon and are tired of people complaining every year for the same thing. I’ve said it before, but if you didn’t know about this, it’s your fault.

as someone who loves outside the city. had no idea this was even a thing or that its a annual thing. (not a baltimore native) if id have known i would not have went i to the city today, but there was nothing in our local news or any indication there was an event this weekend. not everyone can easily and readily get information needed for various reasons.
for me it was just i saw NOTHING on local or regional news about it at all.

I live in York County and stayed overnight in Timonium. It was on WBAL11 at 5AM, a piece was on Fox45 last night, and 98Rock was promoting it.

There are not that many posts on this topic (ie the logistics). Just a few. There’s also one about the weather and one asking about the participants. This is a more explicit version of the pinned post which I think is reasonable.

u/rohdawg 11h ago
I’m sorry that you’re stuck, but in the future I’d encourage you to look at traffic disruptions in a city you traveled 5 states to see.

Hey Ian I would recommend taking the light rail if you can the main marathon usually ends by 12:30pm but people hang around afterwards and then crews have to take things apart and traffic gets heavy. The end of the marathon is by the orioles stadium it gets hectic over the entire area.
I live in Little Italy and usually walk around during this time I’ve lived here since 2012 and every year it’s the same thing with traffic.
If you want to drive I would drive as closely as possible and park in the light rail parking lot and take it downtown and when your event is over just take the light rail back to your car this would give you a bit more of flexibility.9

My wife took the kids to the 10:30am showing. Took the light rail from N. Linthicum and they had a smooth ride in with no hassle.
Take the light rail if you are able.

There will be crowds still, but the roads will be mostly open by that time. As others said light rail is ideal, but you certainly can drive in, just be aware.

Thanks for making us aware. I’m a Lyft driver and will go out tonight.

u/Taco_Knight_88 10h ago
I think you can make bank if you stay out of the downtown area but close enough to pick up after the events are over.

Thank you last night was kind of shitty. I did have one passenger that paid $8 n he tipped me $10 cash. He was very sweet.

I’m also surprised people are surprised. But I’m stuck inside the loop and can’t go anywhere until 3:00 so I can empathize

It's going to be October 16 next year. Happens on the same weekend every year. You can put it in your calendar now

There was a service call that came in for an elevator at UMMC this morning, the guy who was taking it could not get to the hospital. Kinda crazy, but it will still be shutdown later this evening🤷🏻♂️.

People seem to struggle with object permanence, zero chance they can remember something that happens annually.
-4
u/Thanatosst 8h ago
The only people who should remember the exact dates year-to-year are the participants.
The lack of proper communication about this event (and all others that functionally shut down the city) and the road closures are complete failure by the organizers and the city. There has been zero communication about it outside of reddit.

u/crocodile_grunter 7h ago
There is so much communication about this! Every social media site, local news, even signs on 83. The only thing they don’t do is send a personalized text to every phone in the city 😂
2
u/Thanatosst 6h ago
How about putting the signs over 695 to use? Or mailers for folks who don't use social media and don't drive on 83?
Given that lack of communication is a problem for literally every single time an event like this happens, whatever tiny amount of communication being done is obviously inadequate.
1
u/crocodile_grunter 6h ago
“Whatever tiny amount” as someone who lives in the city, I’ve seen communication about this event almost daily for the past month, via three different forms of social media and literal signs next to the main highway leading into Baltimore, and along the route downtown and across the city.
1
u/Thanatosst 6h ago
I've seen zero signs on 295.
Social media is only effective if you have social media, and follow the specific accounts for this one event. Which, guess what, the vast, vast majority of the city does not do. Thus, while it may work for you, it's clearly inadequate to notify the entire city.
And god forbid anyone who doesn't live on the route wants to go into the city on a weekend, right? No way the thousands of people who do that every single weekend should be informed.

learned that the hard way one year, left the car in a garage inside the loop and spent three hours waiting on barricades to move. park north of the route and walk in, it beats sitting on light st watching the same light cycle.

I just got to love all the people complaining about something that you could only have not known about if you weren't paying attention to anything. FFS, y'all.

I just got home from being stuck in that crap! Uhg what a nightmare. Coming from a city that does lots of running festivals and races, they did not do a great job informing the public or letting people know how to get out of the city. What a nightmare.

I went out just for heck of it and to be honest there is a lot of closures that have nothing to do with the race
