Seymour scared the shit out of me. Never do that again please. Allowed too many to reach base/runs scored with 2 outs.

u/ShadowGuyinRealLife 5h ago
I did not feel comfortable after the 7th inning. Any lead is better than being behind while at the same time no lead is insurmountable. That said "3 runs at the end of an inning" is "pretty safe." Once the bottom of the 7th started the Tampa Bay Rays might have had a nice lead 5-1, but the Guardians still had their chance to score runs that inning.

I'm still thinking about the gravity of that missed swing call that led to the Rays scoring three in the 7th. Am I correct in believing that had it been called a swing, which it was, the inning would've been over?
29
u/EconIsCool Tampa Bay Rays 6h ago
No, because he struck out looking on a pitch out of the zone soon after, that he refused to challenge because thats the way Yandy is. Had zero impact on the game.
10
u/Important-Net-9805 Cleveland Guardians 6h ago
i heard them say he's not challenged a pitch once. thats wild lol

Not once, and he never will. He says he just wants to stick to his process at the plate… whatever that means!

Idk why you’re getting downvoted to shit for asking a simple question lol
2
u/IvyGold Washington Nationals • United States 4h ago
Why thank you. I take my downvotes like man, but was wondering the same thing.
I've been trying to figure out why that call is bugging me so much: I now think the missed swing call advanced the runner on 1B to 2B and the runner on 2B to 3B, which then set up the two-run score.
I dunno. I just remember thinking that could've changed the entire series. I posted the same thought live on the GDT and got a handful of upvotes, so I wasn't being a complete idiot.

They talk about the Rays not being in rhythm because of so many days off - the Guardians had a 1st round bye and lost the first 2 games of the playoffs, have been 5-2 since.
I don't think the bye is always good for these teams that are used to playing 6-7 days a week.
17
u/MorebidStuff 6h ago
I think the byes are good for pitchers but it hurts the offenses. The Rays sweeping round 1 meant they only played 3 real games from Sept 28 through Oct 11. Hard to build momentum as a hitter
13
6
u/yamborma Cleveland Guardians 6h ago
Yeah, I think it's usually better for the pitching staff than the offense.
11
u/Fair_enough42 Milwaukee Brewers 6h ago
Yeah, rest always comes to mind first, but you risk losing competitive rhythm if it’s too long.
That’s why some teams started doing mock games in between series I think.
3
u/verbutten Chicago Cubs • Korea 5h ago
Very curious what Murphy and the team have cooked up to address this
8
u/Intrepid-Message698 Milwaukee Brewers 6h ago
All 4 teams with the byes won, but sure the byes aren't good.
10
u/yamborma Cleveland Guardians 6h ago
Rays scored less than 3 runs per game but still swept the Yankees, Cleveland lost their first two.
Some teams need a reset if they win the bye but weren't playing well to finish the year or they have older guys who need the rest. Some teams are hot going into the playoffs and the rest kills momentum.
I said "I don't think it's always good" and apparently you took that as "it is always not good."
0
u/Intrepid-Message698 Milwaukee Brewers 6h ago
It's always good. You act like teams don't have stretches where they don't hit well even if they're playing every day.
3
u/yamborma Cleveland Guardians 6h ago
Since they started this playoff format in 2022, teams with a bye were 9-7 in their first round coming into this season. 13-7 is still not "always good"
1
u/Intrepid-Message698 Milwaukee Brewers 6h ago
You are also not accounting for the teams that lost in the wild card round. When the team with the bye wins that means 2 teams without the bye lost not just one.
0
u/yamborma Cleveland Guardians 6h ago
Who cares? We are talking about the success of the team with the bye. It doesn't matter what the opposing team did before that. This comment is legitimately stupid because you're grasping at straws.
2
u/Intrepid-Message698 Milwaukee Brewers 6h ago
Okay you're clearly math illiterate. Good convo.
-2
u/yamborma Cleveland Guardians 6h ago edited 6h ago
You're changing the conversation to win probabilities when you know the conversation was about the teams with the bye playing worse than their ability because of the days off. Move the goalposts more.
"All the teams won so obviously it is always good for them."
"Actually, they were 9-7 before this season."
"Um, well, when you factor in the probability of winning the previous series and that 2 teams have already lost when they win their series then actually that analysis proves that it is better for the team." Pushes glasses up on nose.
Yeah, it was a "good convo."
2
u/Intrepid-Message698 Milwaukee Brewers 6h ago
My entire premise was about championship winning probability.
What else would make taking the bye always optimal?
Do you think I was arguing taking the bye always makes you play better?
→ More replies (0)1
u/Intrepid-Message698 Milwaukee Brewers 6h ago edited 6h ago
Ask every team if they want the bye and all 32 say yes. It's always good to take the bye. Needing fewer wins to become champions is always the correct decision.
Here let me make it easy for you. Would you prefer to play the entire playoffs then face a random team in a 1 game playoff at the end or be the team that doesn't play for a month then plays the winner of the playoffs in the 1 game championship?
0
u/yamborma Cleveland Guardians 6h ago
There is no one game playoff anymore. Not sure what that has to do with anything. Your scenario doesn't exist. 7 out of 20 teams that have gotten a bye in 5 years of this playoff format have lost a 5 game series to a team that was usually not as good as them in the regular season.
Sure, teams would choose to have the bye for a lot of reasons. One less team to beat, the ability to line up their pitching staff for the series, etc.
But in reality, it isn't always good for the team. Those are the teams with some of the best records in their league and coming into this season they were only 9-7. Cleveland barely snuck through this season.
Keep arguing though. The record speaks for itself.
1
u/Intrepid-Message698 Milwaukee Brewers 6h ago
You aren't accounting for the fact that you might lose the wild card round. Let's say the bye hurts you and your winning chance is only 40% because your hitters get cold. That 40% is still greater than the 60% combined by the other two teams (30% each) to get to the league championship series.
5
u/ThreeEyesWhitePerson 6h ago
Teams with a bye are also usually facing a team with a worse record that had to play their way in, so...
1
u/Intrepid-Message698 Milwaukee Brewers 6h ago
Cleveland finished 1 game ahead of the white Sox which is essentially even.
1
u/ThreeEyesWhitePerson 6h ago
Okay, that accounts for one of the four teams you mentioned, so let's call that one series a coin flip (and it went 5 games and easily could have gone the other way). There were three others where the teams were not just one game better.
1
u/Intrepid-Message698 Milwaukee Brewers 6h ago
Needing to win fewer games to win the championship and getting your pitching staff rested is optimal. I cannot believe there are still people thinking a bye is a disadvantage. Every single team instantly takes a bye if offered.
1
u/ThreeEyesWhitePerson 5h ago
I'm not taking a position, I'm just pointing out a very obvious conflating variable that your original comment completely glossed over. Teams with a bye also have home field advantage. There are several possible explanations that don't involve a long rest period being good or bad.
26
u/sometimes_a_dog New York Mets 6h ago

-14
u/Prudent-Law304 6h ago
Could you imagine a Brewers-Rays World Series? I think the ratings would be at an all-time low. I think Cleveland would make it just a little bit more interesting. Whatever the sceneries will be, MLB will take a huge nosedive after this year's World Series.

They did. Life gets easier when you accept that the media praises whichever team is winning instead of thinking they’re speaking facts when they praise us and are biased hacks when they praise our opponents
-3
u/yamborma Cleveland Guardians 6h ago
The media doesn't think the Guardians are good. Wilbon is on ESPN saying the White Sox will beat them, the Rays will sweep them, they'll only win one game. ESPN had 1 dude pick the Guardians to beat the Rays and 13 chose the other way. The post game show when the Guardians advanced over Chicago, Pedro was basically like "well they keep winning, whatever."
