These go to 11.

Biopics are made for mass consumption, not actual fans. I learned that the hard way with the Queen biopic. It was absolute garbage for anyone that was a true fan.

Rocketman was gas tho

Rocketman is my favorite music bio! The Queen bio was safe, boring tripe. I can’t believe they gave him the Oscar.

u/CiaranWest 4h ago

The Weird Al one was peak though. It just totally pissed on the genre.

u/bowlofcantaloupe 4h ago

Because Rocket Man had a unique artistic take on the biopic as opposed to: here is the events of what the band did.

It's why nobody cared about Deliver Me From Nowhere but Blinded By the Light is a great movie.

I like Queen and I thought it was quite fun but I'm not a direhard fan. I'm glad Queen music got exposed to the newer generations thanks to the movie

As a big fan they made Freddie very one dimensional, totally unlike himself, and picked the wrong person to play him. Other than that it was ok.

Tolkien fans see the LOTR film the same way, at least my dad does, and I always explain its entertainment not to be taken too seriously.

2

u/AgentCirceLuna 46m ago

Yeah, I thought it was fun too and enjoyed watching it. I just didn’t take it seriously. I don’t know why reddit is so miserable ffs.

u/CalagaxT 2h ago

Got some news for you. Even those of us who aren't really into Queen thought that movie was a piece of shit.

u/AgentCirceLuna 44m ago

Nearly everyone I’ve met loved it with the exception of Redditors. I tend to do what Reddit says the opposite way.

The general public eats that shit up like pigs in slop too. I really don’t get it. Average Joes really love their MarvelBarf and mediocre biopics.

7

u/FatHaleyJoelOsment 4h ago

Dewey Cox was the only biopic worth watching.

6

u/patheticnerd42069 4h ago

The beatles! Please stop fighting here in India!

5

u/Bainer29 4h ago

Idk man, Weird Al Yankovic’s biopic was pretty useful for shedding light on bigger world-issues, such as the tragic kidnapping of Madonna by Pablo Escobar

u/VelociRapper92 3h ago

Walk Hard should have blown up the biopic genre in the same way that Austin Powers and Scream did it to Spy Movies and slashers. But no, Hollywood keeps making that crap and the public keeps eating it up. Wall Hard is seriously underrated, one of the top comedies ever made. Certainly the best music comedy. I would put it above even Spinal Tap.

1

u/FatHaleyJoelOsment 2h ago

Agreed. Walk Hard is as quotable as Monty Python or The Big Lebowski.

In this moment, I am euphoric. Not because of any phoney biopic’s entertainment factor but because I am enlightened by my own intelligence.

“But this one goes to four”

This is pretty funny

hell, a single 3 hour movie trying to capture the beatles from 63-70 would be horrible & rushed. & assuming you start at paul & john first meeting in the 50s, or hell even earlier with any of the boys childhood, and it’ll be a bad movie.

what they’re trying to do with this one seems like it could be an interesting artistic endeavour. gives you quadruple the time to explore the beatles. as well as considering they’ll be playing with perspectives (ie. if i’m understanding correctly we’ll see some events in multiple movies, but from the different perspectives of the boys).

which means the pitch for these movies isn’t ’here’s the beatles story’ it’s ’here’s how being The Beatles impacted the lives of these four young men’ & that’s infinitely more interesting to me. like do we really want a beatles version of the queen biopic? briefly going through every stage of the band brushing past certain events & not taking the time to fully immerse themself in the story they’re telling? just hitting the marks? ugh, i hope these movies will be better.

i’m hopeful that these movies will be more interesting. the beatles story has been written about ad nauseum. a standard biopic would just be a boring reenactment of books we all can read. the way they’re doing it provides the space to do something truly interesting & special, in a way that truly honours the boys legacy. i hope they actually live up to that.

“These go to 4.”

4 Beatles films.

5

u/DoctorFunkinstein12 4h ago

I like the 4 movies, I hate the way they’re being released, but I like that it’s 4. They’re not gonna fit the entire Beatles story in 2 hours without someone feeling underfocused. There’s too much in those 7 years.

3

u/AceofKnaves44 John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band 4h ago

But there’s four.

3

u/BubbaUnkle 4h ago

It’d be so easy to make a critically acclaimed high selling beatles movie. Literally just make y tu mama tambien but with 4 guys

1

u/pound_cake69 4h ago

La Bamba with 4 guys

12

u/Brief-Art-2974 5h ago

“My thoughts on movies that haven’t been released yet.”

-2

u/pound_cake69 4h ago

If you didn’t notice, it’s a meme

0

u/Brief-Art-2974 4h ago

Caught that.

4

u/MostlyPotStickers 4h ago

I don’t think there’s been a good music biopic in over 20 years.

6

u/-Clem-Fandango- 4h ago

Dewey Cox and Weird Al are the only decent ones.

1

u/CiaranWest 4h ago

The NWA one was watchable, but it was mostly because of the acting talent and not the plot/historical accuracy.

1

u/MrNice1983 4h ago

Weird Al movie was fantastic

3

u/nohobal 4h ago

What about Love and Mercy, Rocketman and Better Man?

1

u/MostlyPotStickers 3h ago

A lot of these responses aren’t biopics and/or didn’t come out within the last 20 years, but there a few gems in there.

1

u/AgentCirceLuna 47m ago

So funny how pretty much everyone I’ve met disagrees.

1

u/MostlyPotStickers 24m ago

What’s funny about that?

0

u/Ligeya 4h ago

"Control" about Ian Curtis (Joy Division) was great. And "24 hours party people".

1

u/Sweet_Solid_7746 3h ago

24 hour party people is like 26 years old lol

1

u/Ligeya 3h ago

Nah, you're lying. It can't be.

1

u/MostlyPotStickers 3h ago

Control came out just shy of 20 years ago, so I guess you’re technically right, and 24 hour party people is not a biopic, nor did it come out in the last 20 years.

3

u/Aveeye 4h ago

"How about you make a series, and then you can cover more detail without rehashing the same shit over and over again, which is inevitably going to happen because the 4 guys basically lived together 24/7 from 63 to 66. Can't you just do that?"

"But this is 4 movies..."

4

u/dennisdeems 4h ago

My understanding is that the whole point is to see the same events from four different perspectives. Yes they spent most of their time together, but by 1966 they were having four very different experiences.

2

u/Traditional_Bike8880 4h ago

“Better”? THEY’RE. NOT. OUT. YET.

Jfc if I see one more post on this sub taking a movie no one’s seen yet as a given quantity…

1

u/Responsible_6446 3h ago

best comment i've seen on this movie fiasco.

1

u/robotslendahand 3h ago

Has Rashomon been mentioned, yet?

1

u/tubulerz1 Love 3h ago

In this economy, I can only afford to see three of them.

1

u/DigDugged 1h ago

But these go to 4

1

u/RabidCatfox 43m ago

Anybody else think that they are going to over-do it with The Beatles having conflicting memories? Like it will tell four mutually inconsistent versions...too much?

1

u/Monkberry3799 Won't you come out to play? 4h ago

"Beatles fans, we'll give you not one, but FOUR movies with top notch production, renowned actors and full-fledged promotion worldwide"

(Some) Beatles fans: "No, no, we don't want them!!!!"

2

u/BirdComposer 4h ago

Lot of bad movies out there with “top notch production” and well-known actors, and in this case, the director’s pretty lame. Turning this into four movies just makes me think of how self-important and impressed with itself American Beauty was vs. how shallow the actual movie was. It’s all on the screenwriters.

1

u/Monkberry3799 Won't you come out to play? 3h ago

I really liked that movie, and many people did. Successful by any metric. If you don't like it, that's fine too.

u/idreamofpikas ♫Dear friend, what's the time? Is this really the borderline?♫ 4h ago

The same could be said for the Get Back documentary. Instead of making an 8 hour documentary, Jackson could have just made a 2 hour documentary and try to make it a little better.

More content means more money.

20

u/bowlofcantaloupe 4h ago

If you wanted a shorter version of Get Back you could just watch that chapter of the Beatles Anthology.

I'm glad we got a lot of content.

2

u/idreamofpikas ♫Dear friend, what's the time? Is this really the borderline?♫ 4h ago

I'm glad we got a lot of content.

Me too. I'm also glad we are getting four films, one on each Beatle. No doubt someone at some point will edit together a really good single film from all four in the future.

2

u/bowlofcantaloupe 4h ago

The 4 films is a great idea. The 4 films with one release date is terrible.

I'm probably going to sign up for an AMC membership for a month or two so I can catch them all. But zero chance most people will see more than 1 or 2 on initial release.

2

u/idreamofpikas ♫Dear friend, what's the time? Is this really the borderline?♫ 4h ago

The 4 films is a great idea. The 4 films with one release date is terrible.

No, it is actually not. The biggest cost in films. even more than the production budget is the marketing budget. For example the film Yesterday had a production budget of 40 million (10 of which was for the songs) and a marketing budget of 75 million.

1 release date means 1 marketing budget. Financially it is smart.

And while they are releasing four films, they are only using 1 director, 1 writing team, 1 film crew, 1 cast, 1 prop team. It is like a Marvel film that shoots a lot extra for the special editions of the film but instead the Beatles are making 4 films from the 1 film.

But zero chance most people will see more than 1 or 2 on initial release.

That will very much be true. I don't think they are expecting four hit films. This is very much a gimmick. a gimmick that will get the films a lot of free press.

It was a series on Disney Plus, wasn't it? How does that make more money than a movie?

2

u/CiaranWest 4h ago

"Comment deleted by user"

Exactly, mate.

Where did I say or suggest it would make more money than a movie?

I said an 8 hour documentary would make more money than a 2 hour documentary and that four films are going to make more money than one movie.

1

u/tsnke1972 5h ago

Releasing them all on streaming sounds normal, just like a regular series. Doing that in theaters sounds like a bad plan. Still I'll watch them all. Unless they're terrible.

1

u/DodgerDogg1981 4h ago

How would you know they are terrible though?

1

u/tsnke1972 4h ago

I suppose by watching one of them
