Todd Phillips Go Fund Me
Todd Phillips, one of the most important bluegrass bass players of our generation, has a go fund me set up. He has a degenerative disease in his shoulder and can't work/play at this point. Please consider helping him out!

New Rule: No hate speech, religion, or politics
After a ton of inappropriate and childish comments today, we have added a new rule as noted in the post title. Honestly, it's LONG overdue. This sub is about bluegrass and our love of music. Do you want to argue politics? There are plenty of subs for that.
If the comments are kept civil and polite and related to bluegrass that will be fine:
"I don't like Ricky Skaggs because he preaches from stage"
But not:
"You're an @@#$$%$ for believing in X" or "F*ck you".
Not hard, right?

Stop whatever you’re doing for the next 2 hrs and 5 minutes and listen Bela Fleck - Live Heart
Magical sounds by some of the greatest musicians on earth resonating through the walls of the Ryman. What could be better?

Trampled by Turtles Fiddle
Seen TBT multiple times but I just want to give some praise to Ryan Young the fiddle player for TBT. He’s insanely good and i think totally unappreciated. He makes the band amazing.

The skill level needed to play bluegrass is off the charts
I grew up playing in rock and roll and some country bands as a lead guitar player but could never rise to the level of a competent bluegrass musician.
In a standard bar band you can get away with knowing some licks and chonking your way through cover songs. I have yet to hear a half-ass bluegrass band, it's like every musician is top notch. I'm both envious and bummed that I feel like I'll never be able to rise to that level but will always enjoy listening.

Béla Fleck - Strider - Live Heart
Holy shit. Jaw droppingly good.
Filmed at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN on January 8, 2022.
I believe this performance is on his new Ryman album.

An in-depth profile of Mountain Grass Unit
Last summer, I spent a week on tour with Mountain Grass Unit—one of the most exciting bands coming up in the jamgrass scene. They were extremely generous with their time, diving into their musical backgrounds, the mechanics of playing and touring, and how some of them actually came into bluegrass somewhat begrudgingly.
It's a long read, but it's broken up into chapters, and it gives a fly-on-the-wall perspective of what it was like following them all the way to the Ryman.

Martin d-18 or d-28 for mandolin player
Learning mandolin primarily. Eventually want to add a dreadnought but if I'm jamming would probably mainly be playing chords instead of lead since I can do that on mandolin. Would you go with d-18 or d-28 for this case? Could get a mint 2018 d-28 off marketplace right now for $2k which I could afford so not sure if I should pull trigger on that or d-18 is better. Would rather get the right instrument vs getting a good deal but not sure if difference in these recommendations has to do with price difference.

Dusters + Kyle Tuttle
10/15 Charlotte- Dusters were kind of vague about Pandolfi's whereabouts. Kinda doesn't sound great considering all 4 of them said something.
Show rocked, Kyle tuttle was great, Broken Compass sit in was awesome. They all seem thrilled to have Kyle Tuttle. It sort of sounds like he'll be in the band for a little while, if not longer.

Discussion The best bluegrass performance Ive ever seen in my life
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones at Merlefest 1996. I was completely blown away. Jerry Garcia died the previous year and was looking for something to do since no Grateful Dead tour to hop on. Bela blew me away as they brought Peter Rowan and Sam Bush onstage to jam with them. Was anybody else there? What a stunning performance
