Custom Project Behold, my Jar of Obsolete Pieces!

I found this idea here and thought it was pretty cool! So I bought a jar and filled it, but I never thought I would be almost completely filled already!

Do you recognize all the games?

Some might not be visible, but I didn’t want to shake it.. yet!

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one that saves replaced pieces! I actually organize all of mine because some of the pieces I’m replacing are still better than default pieces in other games. I have so so many pieces in my organizers.

u/cubbiesnextyr Jun 25 '26

I guess I'm confused.

Are these obsolete because you upgraded components?

153

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

Yes, either because of upgraded components (for the most part), or because of duplicates present in multiple extensions

32

u/cubbiesnextyr Jun 25 '26

Ah ok. I just keep the old components in with the game when I do any upgrades (which I honestly don't often do).

10

u/SlowBoilOrange Jun 25 '26

Same here, but I like OP's idea better. I hate extra stuff in a game box making it harder to put away or set up.

Sometimes it's nice though, like if it's currency and you could feasibly run out and need to use the old ones.

1

u/QstnMrkShpdBrn Jun 26 '26

Same. I do prefer when they design the extra space into the tray for premium or expansion parts, though.

4

u/cubbiesnextyr Jun 26 '26

I especially like the games that give enough space to sleeve cards.

15

u/SantaFeRay Jun 25 '26

I promise you can throw away the filler pieces from Roll Player.

21

u/ErraticDragon Jun 25 '26

Sure, sure, it starts out easy like that. Next you'll say we can throw away the box our phones came in.

9

u/IH8DwnvoteComplainrs Jun 25 '26

Or... unneeded expansion boxes. The horror.

2

u/Dakiara Jun 26 '26

Every one of those haunts me. 🫣

19

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

I.. can’t!

5

u/MasterOfPipettez Jun 25 '26

What if I need to replace a piece in a game that needs a no littering image

6

u/NefariousnessOk1996 Jun 25 '26

When you buy everdell complete edition, for some reason it has medal point tokens and cardboard point cutout tokens.

6

u/cC2Panda Jun 25 '26

I'm guessing it costs more to rearrange piece and create a new die to punch out the tokens than to just keep the original arrangement and have some extra pieces.

5

u/MrDirt Jun 25 '26

I thought that was so silly! Also annoyed that I feel tricked into buying the resource vessels when they don't give you one for every tray slot and there's 3d printable models that look better than them.

2

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

I am waiting for the French version of the Collector Edition (if that even happens), but I’m glad to know I’ll get to fill the jar furthermore!

35

u/Flaky-Fox-7523 Jun 25 '26

Arguably better than my solution which is putting them in random bags then in the loft, not sure if i could even find a piece if i needed to replace it now

27

u/PapaOoomaumau Xia: Legends of a Drift System Jun 25 '26

I see some Scythe in thar

12

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

There is definitely a lot of Scythe pieces in there!

14

u/oi_you_nutter Jun 25 '26

Having a range of replacement game pieces is useful. Cubes are easy to lose.

19

u/lokemannen Jun 25 '26

Petition for the OP to eat everything in the jar.

7

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

I love munchin’ on cardboard tokens!

1

u/Machine_Excellent Jun 26 '26

Guess how many in the jar, you get to eat them.

6

u/Suspicious_Rain_7183 Jun 25 '26

Never know when you need that spare piece 😆

7

u/divinecheese720 Jun 25 '26

I see Scythe and Small World

5

u/Howitzeronfire Jun 25 '26

Ah yes, the "Colored Cubes of Many Functions"

6

u/Prof_Rain_King Jun 25 '26

Ooooh.

My friends and I sometimes make new party games out of old games and random shit we collect. This jar is goldmine!

4

u/xxrayeyesxx Jun 25 '26

I got a vase with the same vibe

4

u/Senferanda Jun 27 '26

I always look on BGG each game has a community stats, parts wanted section. People are always requesting missing pieces. Example I have a Small World game I thrifted that is missing coins.

1

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 27 '26

Do you need Small World coins?

3

u/derTommygun Jun 25 '26

Now I'm regretting throwing all mine away...

4

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

I never throw anything away.. I even have a shelf dedicated to empty game boxes!

3

u/Equilibrium404 Jun 25 '26

It’s so validating to hear that I’m not the only one that keeps empty expansion boxes in my closet lol

3

u/draqza Carcassonne Jun 25 '26

I finally accepted that if I sell anything, I'm not likely to part it back out into base game + expansions, so I started getting rid of expansion boxes a few months ago. I have been cutting the cover art out with the thought that maybe I can use that for decoration at some point...but probably I will finally give in and recycle the covers as well in another decade.

1

u/beldaran1224 Worker Placement Jun 26 '26

Ah, I've found it freeing to get rid of the millenial boxes.

3

u/Ascarys- Jun 25 '26

I love this idea, definitely using it when I get our game room finished!

I love holding on to pieces I upgraded out, sometimes they can be used to upgrade other games. I recently used the wood bits from Scythe to replace the cardboard tokens in Origins, worked great!

3

u/Flip-9s Jun 25 '26

I have the same but large container with everything baggies incase I sell the game.

1

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

But wouldn’t you sell the game with the upgraded components only?

3

u/Flip-9s Jun 25 '26

No - I sell those separately but heavily discounted. :)

3

u/HakoftheDawn Jun 26 '26

I've got a jar of dirt

5

u/FandomMenace Legendary Encounters Alien Jun 25 '26

Lay them out, photograph them, number them, make it a game to identify them on reddit. From there, put them back in your games, or sell them as replacements on ebay.

2

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

I could do that at some point yes!

4

u/thegiverstake Jun 25 '26

I see the coins from Roll Player! One of the best games ever, imo!!

Did you get the metal coins like I did? Is that why they're in the jar? XD

3

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

Yes, I have the metal coins for Roll Player, and I love the game as well!

4

u/Srpad Jun 25 '26

I would laugh that you have saved tokens that are literally labeled to be thrown away but I have done this also.

I don't have a jar but I have bags of redundant tokens in the back of a closet.

3

u/draqza Carcassonne Jun 25 '26

I have some throw away markers as well (definitely from Barenpark, probably some other games as well) that I told myself I might eventually use as proxy chits for game design.

2

u/adamhanson Jun 25 '26

A jar of dice is so satisfying too

2

u/scrubpatrol Jun 25 '26

I have one too!

2

u/rcrdnls Jun 25 '26

I like this idea... I have em all in bags in a drawer! And yep I see quite a few that I have too (Role Player for one). Thanks for sharing!

2

u/wedge_47 Jun 25 '26

Looks like some Charterstone in there as well, among others that have already been mentioned.

1

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

Nope, I don’t own Charterstone

1

u/BuffelBek Jun 26 '26

I thought the same thing, but it turns out that Scythe uses the same resource tokens for wood and food that Charterstone does.

2

u/power_yyc Jun 25 '26

I'm 100% doing this!

2

u/Zozzbomb2 Jun 25 '26

That looks awesome! Always having stand in pieces is great!

2

u/ewige I had Jack-u-pan! Jun 25 '26

I'm gonna guess those cubes + coins = Clank!

2

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

Yeah, congrats on finding out Clank! It’s my favorite game!

2

u/ewige I had Jack-u-pan! Jun 25 '26

It's those awful two-tone coins that give it away :D they need immediate replacement.

1

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

They’re quite recognizable, that’s true, but they weren’t easy to upgrade.. I bought the Clank Metal Coins during the Clank Legacy 2 crowdfounding campaign for all my Clank games!

2

u/neomagicwarrior Twilight Imperium Jun 25 '26

I have a lamp and gumball machine filled in exactly the same way...gotta leave it out as "Decor"

2

u/Khaeven04 Jun 25 '26

This is an unholy relic!

2

u/lord_heman Jun 25 '26

They're old not obsolete! (can you hear the voice? :D )

2

u/MrDirt Jun 25 '26

I need a jar for empty expansion boxes...

2

u/JHaasie77 ROOT ROOT ROOT Jun 25 '26

You're supposed to eat them

2

u/King_K_24 Jun 25 '26

Great idea

2

u/GidimXul Jun 25 '26

I just sorted the wood from the cardboard and threw away a dresser drawer full of obsolete/redundant card board. I feel lighter now but wish I had taken a picture.

2

u/GrandElemental Jun 25 '26

Roll Player and Scythe, great choices!

2

u/Handguns4Hearts Jun 25 '26

I wanna start doing this for decor. I have a bunch of cardboard coins and bits that I generally upgrade.

2

u/Tuism Jun 26 '26

Extra cubes? In this economy?

(I don't have enough pieces to bastardise for other prototyping purposes)

2

u/kindsoberfullydressd Scout Jun 26 '26

Obsolieces?

2

u/SkipperCat11 Jun 26 '26

I’ve been using a ziploc bag for just this purpose. The jar looks much nicer!

2

u/YourBrainOnFacts Jun 26 '26

That's even better than a jar of buttons!

1

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 26 '26

Much better, yes!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '26

This would be a fun I spy jar, make a little list of things to hunt for in it!!

2

u/Hungry_Lie2888 Jun 28 '26

I thought the cubes were Lords of Waterdeep... I keep my old pieces after we upgrade (and we've gotten games from thrift shops missing a meeple or two so we could sub them out. Now I have a 3d printer so we just make new ones or whole new sets if we want... But this is kind of a cool display!

2

u/BruxYi Jun 28 '26

I have a similar one (it's a plastic yogurt jar though). But to me it's more of a jar of gamedesign component

2

u/Carpable Jun 30 '26

I store my extra game pieces in my unneeded expansion boxes haha 😆

2

u/SexyJimBelushi Jul 01 '26

Its so beautiful

3

u/BIGMASTERSHOT Jun 25 '26

I SEE A PV FROM ROOT?

5

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

There are Root pieces in there, correct!

1

u/FibroBitch97 Jun 25 '26

I see small world, brass, wingspan, root

2

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

Smallworld and Root are correct, Brass, not yet (can’t remember where I put the cardboard money token), and Wingspan not (if you mentioned it because of the cubes, they’re from another game)

1

u/ThePurityPixel Jun 25 '26

Do we have to guess how many pieces are in the jar?

1

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

You can try, for sure, but I don’t even know! Would be a fun challenge though!

1

u/Solax636 Jun 25 '26

Time to create your own boardgame!

1

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

I’ve tried already, and even made a prototype, but it’s not that easy!

1

u/Angoulor Jun 25 '26

Do I see some Dixit on top?

Also, Root's lizards victory points marker!

1

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

Yes, congrats for spotting Dixit!

1

u/StopThatFerret Concordia Jun 25 '26

I think you should shake it!

Right now you have a stratified collection of pieces, which is kind of a geological record of the games you have upgraded over the years, and is neat in its own way.

However, shaking it will give a distribution that allows for a contrasting combination of shapes and pieces.

Ultimately, I think this is a really neat idea.

2

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

I filled the whole jar today, strate dating would be totally wrong!

But yeah, I will probably shake it at some point!

1

u/SuperpyroClinton Jun 25 '26

Those wingspan cubes need to be stacked properly!

2

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

They’re not from Wingspan though!

2

u/SuperpyroClinton Jun 25 '26

Oh, well stack them anyway lol

1

u/C4rdninj4 Jun 25 '26

It's good to have those if you need spares, or if you need to bind Calypso.

1

u/silly_whimsy Jun 25 '26

El Grande cubes

1

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

Nope, not El Grande either!

The grey and orange ones might give a hint about the game from which all those cubes come.. as well as other tokens!

1

u/thartle8 Jun 25 '26

Donate them to aspiring board game designers or game design group for prototype pieces

1

u/Gearran Jun 25 '26

Wait a minute. I recognize the coins with the square holes in pics 3 and 4 from somewhere...

2

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

They’re from a game that has been mentioned in other comments already!

1

u/Extention_Campaign28 Jun 25 '26

That's where my Diplomacy markers went!

1

u/drewkas Jun 25 '26

Nice collection! But I don’t like that those cubes are inaccessibly at the bottom.

1

u/TigerClaw_TV Jun 25 '26

I have a similar jar but its full of lose peices I bought

1

u/IH8DwnvoteComplainrs Jun 25 '26

This is a lot more fun than bagging them by game, stashing them in my "game stuff" basket, then never looking at it again.

1

u/UNO_LegacyTM Jun 25 '26

Do I win the jar if I can guess how many pieces are in there?

1

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

Sure, take a guess!

1

u/UNO_LegacyTM Jun 25 '26

Is it 69? I'm hilarious

1

u/TomatoFeta Jun 25 '26

I will start the bidding at 27$.

1

u/Hot_Context_1393 Jun 25 '26

Time to design a game using all your extras

1

u/technarch Jun 25 '26

Now you can design a new game that uses these pieces!

1

u/BklynMoonshiner Legit Member Of The Resistance Jun 25 '26

I see tokens from Sheriff of Nottingham

1

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 26 '26

Nope, I don’t have that game

1

u/SpamEatingChikn Nemesis Jun 26 '26

Oh man. I think I’ve filled a dumpster with all the expansion boxes I’ve gotten rid of consolidating into the base game boxes

1

u/Drunkpanada Jun 26 '26

I have a box!!

1

u/BigBlueSound Jun 26 '26

I've got 2 jars! Always good to have them about. Like having jars of odd nuts and bolts, and stray lumber in the garage.

I got rid of the garage, but kept the game pieces.

1

u/djmeltdownks1985 Jun 26 '26

Similar to my jar of obsolete dice!

1

u/Miffy92 Too many games, too little time Jun 26 '26

Those cubes could be from anything....

1

u/PinothyJ Jun 26 '26

That is called a prototyping bits jar!

1

u/dreamyghostella Jun 26 '26

Is that Whirling Witchcraft?

1

u/Soccerref3244 Jun 26 '26

The cubes look like they came from Xia…

2

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 26 '26

Nope, not Xia. They’re from Clank!

1

u/Jannk73 Jun 26 '26

I keep all my leftover pieces also. Just like you have the roll player chits in there that were for throw away and the wooden cubes when upgrading to metal or a game has upgraded you to meeples but still left the wooden cubes. I make a lot of print and plays and use all my extras in my print and plays. My roll player squares get stuff glued on them all the time!

The only one I don’t believe I’ve found a use for yet is Quacks of Quendlinberg cardboard tokens when I upgraded to the nice pieces…. I have so many of those!

1

u/Xerfus Jun 26 '26

Are those little Mini Rogue dice?

1

u/Particular_Cod_9352 Jun 26 '26

love the idea, i will get a jar like that as well to put in all my old unused peicces of tokens.

1

u/RynoKenny Santorini Jun 26 '26

Cubes are never obsolete

1

u/britishwriters Jun 26 '26

This is actually such a cool little monument to board game addiction lol. Half "useful spare parts," half "I paid for these cardboard circles and I refuse to throw them away." Honestly would look great on a game shelf, but also dangerous because now I'd start upgrading pieces just to feed the jar.

1

u/sutechshiroi Jun 26 '26

Now go design a game with these pieces.

1

u/ObliviousOre Jun 27 '26

What would you say is your favorite game that is represented with these pieces?

1

u/mesa_brim692 Jun 28 '26

Thats actually really satisfying to look at. I love seeing how much extra stuff accumulates when you play one game a lot.

1

u/PermitHelper Jun 28 '26

I think that needs to go in a treasure chest box. Little treasures. 🪙🪙🪙🪙

1

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jul 14 '26

Nope, no Monopoly pieces in there

1

u/badace12 Jun 25 '26

I dont know why but this gives me so much anxiety.

3

u/Affectionate-Two-897 Scythe Jun 25 '26

Do not worry, no board game piece was harmed in the process
