SPEEA BCA Promotion process
I am a level 3 speea tech in pnw. What is the promotion process to get to level 4? Do I need skill team and 2nd level manager approval? Assuming that’s all I need what happens when skills team approve it but 2nd level rejects it?
I m just trying to understand the process a bit more. Thx.

Firstly it will review by your manager and senior manager and then it goes till VP level sometimes for level 4. Also it depends on your unit and skills. Tech promotion is comparatively harder than mangement in Boeing.that's why many people move to mangement after level 3.

It’s more about how long you’ve been in your position vs what you can do.

As someone who promotes speea techs, this certainly isn't true in my branch of production engineering. I'd get laughed out by saying, "Yeah, I'm here to talk Bob. He's been a level 3 for 8 years. The end."

Look at the skill description for lvl 3 and lvl 4 in your skill. Write down the different work you do and align it to those descriptions. Take that to your manager and ask what tasks or skills are missing to get that promotion. Add those things to your pm. Get it done.
In a year come back to that break out of lvl3 and lvl4 work. Most of your tasks should be in the lvl 4 categories. Talk to your manager about that raise.
There are still unofficial time-in-seat rules to promotions. Assume 4-5 years at current lvl before you have a good chance to advance.
There are only 5 levels for an entire career. It takes time to get through them.

You have a better chance to apply for a level 4 req, it's what the company prefers you do

That’s not the philosophy of our current group/division, they don’t like folks applying to higher level positions to get a promotion.

Yup same here in SoCal. They disallow a promotion through requisition unless you are already in the process.

Don’t know, still a level 3 after 18 years at the company and 12 years in role. Seems impossible to move up at this company.

What has your mentor said about that? How much technical leadership of do you perform?

I was a level 3 for 13 years. I got lucky and went into a group with high turnover and got a level 4. You can try to play the game and do everything a level 4 is suppose to do but they can always say there is no business case for a level 4.

Same here, I got 15 years, all in same role but different locations; 13 managers in 10 years didn't help, despite all promises.

Puget sound business unit? I. My org, the pitch needs first and second level manager approval. Then I pitch the people team then the skill team.
If 2nd level or SLT rejects, you're done.
