So 27.5m-30m OW and 65-75m DOM?

Feels like this will top out at 150m WW, and I doubt a sequel gets picked up

One and done

I look forward to the creative team talking about the cutting room massacre they had to do to get it under 2 hours.

So many fight scenes must’ve been cut.

u/zakary3888 7h ago

Zangief just fucking vanished after the bar scene

3

u/NvyDaK1ng 7h ago

Biggest guy in the whole movie disappears with no trail. — Perfect setup to make Zangief a secret wrestling ninja.

1

u/Gul_Ducatti 5h ago

Or them cutting Vega vs Guile. Or Joe winning the damned tournament by default because the opponents were needed elsewhere in the movie.

u/Sockin 11h ago

Honestly my favorite part of the movie were the animated sequences and I could see them doing a sequel as an animated movie.

12

u/ContinuumGuy 11h ago edited 11h ago

Some franchises just feel better suited to animation and it's a shame that the "animation ghetto" mindset of many audiences (and executives) means studios feel they have to do live-action.

I can see a sequel picked up if it does really well on streaming.

10

u/Wrong-Vermicelli4723 10h ago edited 10h ago

When has that ever gotten a movie that didn’t do well at the BO a sequel? Not being an ass just genuinely curious

Edit: should’ve specified, streaming era. As in it flopped in theaters but did well enough I. streaming to get a sequel.

u/PokePersona Aardman Animations 3h ago

Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Mortal Kombat 1 but the latter I can understand not counting since that was during the lockdowns where movies were either releasing on streaming at the same time or soon after a theatre release so it's a unique situation.

5

u/SecondEntire539 10h ago

Tron, Donnie Darko, Hellboy, Highlander, The Big Lebowski, The Wizard of Oz, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and probably some more.

16

u/Wrong-Vermicelli4723 10h ago

Shit my bad bro I meant specifically streaming era not straight to dvd model. Godzilla King of monsters is definitely one of them though, forgot about that one.

4

u/SecondEntire539 9h ago

Oh yeah, Godzilla definetely fits here.

1

u/lobolovr6769 5h ago

Well, technically they pivoted to team up with Kong, we haven’t had a “Godzilla-only” sequel to KotM

9

u/SpiritualAd9102 10h ago

These all found big audiences when home video was a thing and people paid money to buy or rent individual movies.

There are examples like Mortal Kombat 1 where streaming carried it to a sequel, but those should have asterisks since this was during or around lockdown when no one was going to theaters. It’s hard to tell if streaming will help as much as it used to now that theaters have been back up for five years now.

This list was pulled out of your imagination? Half the movie on this list are not getting a sequel. Donnie Darko getting a "sequel novel" is not the equivalent of a film. How does The Wizard of Oz or The Big Lebowski fit here?

Edit: a word

3

u/VeronicaAmericana 5h ago

Donnie Darko did get a sequel movie

It was terrible, and straight to video, and nobody saw it

But it did get a sequel

2

u/SecondEntire539 9h ago

This is basead on Internet lists that i saw, just search for box office bombs that did get a sequel.

2

u/ComprehensiveHyena10 10h ago

The Big Lebowski, never had a sequel, unless you mean that unconnected movie with one of the minor characters from it in it? And did you just claim The Wizard of Oz wasn't a success?

2

u/SecondEntire539 9h ago

About The Wizard of Oz, it wasn't at the time of the original release as far as i researched.

1

u/Individual_Client175 Warner Bros. Pictures 9h ago

This guy said streaming man, he's referring to the streaming era.

1

u/SecondEntire539 9h ago

I responded him before he edited to clarify what he meant to say.

2

u/Individual_Client175 Warner Bros. Pictures 9h ago

Ah, gotcha

•

u/somms808 3m ago

The Big Lebowski, never had a sequel

Why is that comma there

13

u/Brad_Spitt_ 12h ago

Mortal Kombat II didn’t make it to even 130, I could see this struggling to get too far past 100 million

3

u/East_Leg_2129 5h ago

It had more competition in the summer.

1

u/lobolovr6769 5h ago

Movies in October typically don’t do all that well compared to movies in May

1

u/East_Leg_2129 5h ago

The ones that don’t have poor opening weekends. 31m is relatively strong for October.

4

u/onehotoneshot 12h ago

Rip straight to video

You would’ve been perfect for a sequel here

7

u/Nervous_Most_5585 11h ago

Less than 65M. WOM is weak.

3

u/mickeyphree1 11h ago

It's going to open less than mk did. 115 tops.

11

u/nicolasb51942003 Warner Bros. Pictures 12h ago

Not bad. It's gonna end up with a similar number as Tron Ares last year, but with a smaller budget in comparison.

u/linebrack 12h ago

I had way more fun with this movie than I was expecting

21

u/fpfall 12h ago

It helped that I went in expecting to be completely disappointed. My expectations were on the floor, and the movie could only go up from there. That said, Cody Rhodes is inspired casting as Guile and got some great laughs.

16

u/SpiritualAd9102 11h ago

Cody Rhodes was good at playing Cody. The character in the movie is nothing like Guile.

11

u/fpfall 11h ago

Really nobody was like their characters except the ones that got no meaningful characterization time (Honda, Dhalsim, Vega, Joe, etc). The only ones that really offended me was Bison being the weirdest fucking pervert and Cammy being a chaotic goblin

7

u/SpiritualAd9102 10h ago

This is true. It’s why I’m confused at the few professional reviews and the many fan comments that are saying this was made “lovingly for fans of the games”.

Outside of the animated scenes, this is nothing like SF. Half the tournament is off screen and the cast are either playing OC’s in Street Fighter costumes or playing themselves in costumes, (Guile and Dan especially).

Dhalsim was probably the only faithful character in the entire thing and he’s in it for like three minutes.

4

u/Flat_Environment_432 11h ago

Maybe it will gt expanded on part 2 at best

3

u/SpiritualAd9102 10h ago

Unless it’s big on streaming, it’s not looking like it’ll get one. Which is funny considering the movie doesn’t have an ending in an attempt at sequel bait.

3

u/lobolovr6769 5h ago

Cody was fun but it was clear in this movie he is no actor. His line delivery was very much “WWE” while almost everyone else in the movie acted like a film actor and delivered their lines as such.

1

u/brockzilla82 5h ago

How much is Cody and Roman in it ?

4

u/Gul_Ducatti 5h ago

Roman does mostly VO work as Akuma until the wet fart of an ending. Cody chews scenery as Guile and gets his ass kicked off screen by Vega.

I think we get maybe a combined 45 seconds of both of them fighting the entire movie if we don’t count the Anime Flashbacks for Akuma.

1

u/brockzilla82 4h ago

But how much screen time for Cody like 5 min?

2

u/Gul_Ducatti 4h ago

Maybe that much. Maybe a bit more. He barely gets any fighting time in.

It is really a shame because this movie LOOKS so good. It really nailed the over the top look and feel of Street Fighter, it just failed to have a coherent story, or script, or characters we should care about, or plot, or pacing, or competent editors, or an ending that isn’t a cliff hanger…

1

u/brockzilla82 4h ago

The reviews say Cody stole the show but how with such limited screen time lol

u/forever87 6h ago

watched Thursday at night. the afternoon before watching, i was scanning my frontpage and an r/sf post had the rotten tomatoes score. i was worried - but the opening animation started off fun. non stop smiling and laughter throughout the movie. cammy was a secondary character, but I'm in love. i had reservations on dan's and ken's actors, but their partnership worked (and the dialogue between ryu and dan was nice too).

ryu explaining his actions was a good topper. a lot of the criticism mentioned the characters are in the same spot (from beginning to end), or remove this character, and the movie remains exactly the same. for me, that couldn't be more wrong - as "animated" and visual the movie was - the events of the movie were "realistic" and not everything needs to be force fed to the viewers. truth be told, i would totally watch an extended version.

so much fun watching, as agreed by my best friend. would be ecstatic for a sequel. more killer bees! and cammy's redemption - and well more cammy x chun

11

u/ComprehensiveHyena10 10h ago

I can easily see a 70% drop next week because after the Street Fighter fans have been to see it, who else will want to.

2

u/Visible-Echidna-4370 5h ago

I think it'll be a similar or slightly worse drop than mortal kombat ii

1

u/East_Leg_2129 3h ago

It has less competition which is in its favor, so we’ll see.

1

u/East_Leg_2129 5h ago

I’m not a street fighter fan and I saw it and enjoyed it.

16

u/SonicInjustice 11h ago

It’s unfortunate that it isn’t performing super well but I had an absolute blast watching it with my Dad. There was a guy who’s clearly a huge Street Fighter fan sitting next to me, the guy was even geeking out at the Capcom logo. I was lucky to have an awesome crowd laughing throughout and having a good time.

I really hope this somehow managed to turn a profit because I’d love this to be a recurring film franchise.

3

u/Flat_Environment_432 10h ago

Same I know people don't like it but I think it will do well it gonna take a while because it was just out

4

u/GapHappy7709 Marvel Studios 12h ago

looks like 30M opening?

4

u/MrConor212 Legendary Pictures 11h ago

I will be shocked if I’m sitting down to watch a sequel in the next few years.

7

u/Kazaloogamergal 12h ago

Again a decent number but that B minus Cinemascore is worrisome.

1

u/[deleted] 12h ago

[deleted]

13

u/Visible-Echidna-4370 12h ago

cinemascore is from fans who saw it opening night

13

u/Kazaloogamergal 12h ago

What does Nolan have to do with anything? This constant "nobody expected an Oscar movie" defense of movies with poor reviews and a bad Cinemascore is straw man bullshit. Street Fighter didn't get poor reviews because it's not like a Christopher Nolan movie. Resident Evil isn't like a Nolan movie either and it got great reviews. Masters of the Universe is not like a Nolan movie and it got better reviews than Street Fighter. 99.9% of critics were not expecting a Street Fighter movie to be Oscar worthy. I haven't seen Street Fighter so I'm not personally judging it but silly movies can be bad. Silly movies are not above criticism just because they are silly.

9

u/Gummy-Worm-Guy 12h ago

These people don’t realize they’re actively depriving themselves of good movies by making excuses every time a studio puts out a bad one.

4

u/Kazaloogamergal 12h ago

Yep. It's so wrong to have no expectations for popcorn movies. Some of our greatest movies are popcorn movies.

1

u/SpiritualAd9102 11h ago

I saw it and it’s uniquely bad. The only people praising this are people who decided they were going to like it a year ago. The CinemaScore being so low reflects that.

7

u/SpiritualAd9102 11h ago

Cinemascore is from fans. A B- is really bad for a movie like this where most of the people seeing it on day one are super fans who have a positive bias.

-3

u/liberatedtech68 12h ago

Correct, it is a fun time if you like the games.

11

u/onehotoneshot 12h ago

Ideally a movie would be enjoyable and appeal to a broader audience than one gaming community

8

u/PokePersona Aardman Animations 11h ago

Also, a bunch of fans of the games didn't even like it

5

u/SpiritualAd9102 11h ago

No it’s not, it takes so many liberties that it feels like a bunch of OC’s in Street Fighter cosplay.

I can’t think of any fans of the game that are happy that they made Bison a feet sniffing pervert.

27

u/newjackgmoney21 12h ago

Terrible movie. If you told me this was edited by the same people as 2016 Suicide Squad I'd believe you. The tone, pacing all over the place. A mess of a movie with a bunch of 90s needle drops. I'm surprised the critic score wasn't lower like Borderlands.

8

u/Stormblessed_Windrun 12h ago

9m true friday? Oof this is going to tank

5

u/Nervous_Most_5585 11h ago

It should open with close to 30M, but that B- CinemaScore won't help it with legs at all.

3

u/cameraspeeding 7h ago

Now they are saying it was only 9 million

3

u/ComprehensiveHyena10 6h ago

For Friday; the other four is for "previews". Which aren't really previews anymore but they keep pretending that movies open on a Friday even when they clearly don't.

1

u/Gullible-Joke-9772 12h ago

Lame movie

3

u/lobolovr6769 5h ago

I thought it was pretty fun for the first hour. Sometime after Bison drains psycho power from Ryu for his machine and Blanka escapes, it just progressively got shittier and shittier and then the final act climax was so incredibly lackluster I can’t even remember almost anything about the last 50 minutes of the film, it was just so bad

1

u/TaleAlarmed3959 2h ago

I liked it

-11

u/sealed-human 12h ago

... In you opinion.

Only a siith(head) speaks in absolutes

2

u/Sad_Chai66 12h ago

Street Fighter needs to make atleast $200 million at the box office to make a profit.

Its going to flop so hard.

4

u/RegularVega 12h ago

Citation?

12

u/Yhendrix49 11h ago

It has a budget of $82 million and films usually need 2-2.5 x the budget to break even meaning this needs to make between $164-205 million to break even.

2

u/lobolovr6769 5h ago

I think it will be lucky to cross $150M WW, its legs are gonna get capped after this week

2

u/_bonez 3h ago

I believe Capcom put up 50% of the reported budget. Not sure how that will mess with the breakeven point for the studio or the game developer as it could lead to a bump in sales for the video game franchise.

2

u/East_Leg_2129 5h ago edited 1h ago

You have no idea how its legs will be or how it will perform internationally. 200m from a 30m US ow is not an impossible hole to get out of. But even if it ends around 150m, I wouldn’t call that a flop, especially after digital and streaming revenue comes in. Other movies this year lost a lot more money.

0

u/DripSnort 11h ago

Guess I’m gonna have to go see it a few thousand more times to get the sequel I want. I’ll try my best

1

u/Sorry-Difference-389 11h ago edited 11h ago

it's not a good movie, messy mediocre and outdated plot. but i reallyenjoyed it, the cast, the set piece and CGI. i could see this banking in Paramount+, so i hope it got decent box office (it's hard), Deadline said it eyed open for 70M WW from 82M budget (not include marketing)

-3

u/BonjaminClay 10h ago

This movie was a blast y'all. It's the most authentic and joyful and energetic game adaptation I've ever seen. Please go see it because I'd love for it to make enough for them to make a second one.

2

u/sci_fientist 4h ago

Bring on the downvotes, I'm with you. It wasn't a great movie by any means but goddamn it was fun. Made me feel like a kid.

0

u/BQ32 2h ago

I watched it, it was expectedly dumb but actually a pretty fun watch. Outside of Bison the rest of the cast looked quite good, the fight scenes were pretty decent with comical relief considering the amount of ridiculous moves they had to incorporate to be canon for the game and some of the scenes and HDR were really well shot and implemented. The soundtrack was also pretty dope for an 80s baby.
