Only 11% kids and families suggests that everyone seeing this are older people with nostalgia for the games.

Clocking in at only 60% recommend with such a fan heavy audience is pretty damning. I’m expecting this to fall off a cliff in the second week. It might crawl past $100 million, but that’s a horrific result for a movie that needs approximately $200 million to break even.

We need to stop recycling old IPs and then wondering why young people aren't showing up. They want their own stuff.

6

u/BigOnAnime Studio Ghibli 9h ago

It's kind of incredible how there still have been no plans for an Overwatch nor Fortnite movie given how much those appealed to younger people and that iron is getting colder.

13

u/Think_Breadfruit2460 11h ago

I think the problem with them will soon be that the monoculture has dissolved even more since gen z. So there are fewer ips everyone loves, younger people seem to enjoy having their own niches more and more.

6

u/Active-Coconut-8961 11h ago

Thing is if the IP is recycled regularly enough this problem can be avoided. Take Mario, very nice old franchise, but it consistently has new games, comics, etc so there is always new kids getting into it.

7

u/Max_Goof 8h ago

I don’t think it’s fair to say Mario is being “recycled” more regularly than Street Fighter. There are zero Mario comics being published compared to Street Fighter comics being published for 20+ straight years now, and Street Fighter has its own steady stream of new toys and new games/DLC coming out.

Poor Street Fighter is just plain more niche than Nintendo’s flagship character, and barring any unforeseen miracles, always will be.

6

u/SpiritualAd9102 10h ago

It helps that the content is all good to great quality. I know many here didn’t like the Mario movie, but it’s at least serviceable to kids and super fans while the games continue to be some of the best on the market.

A handful of properties are evergreen. Nintendo, Marvel, Batman. Could have been Star Wars. Bit stuff like Street Fighter and He-Man appeal to Gen X and are that thing your DAd likes

0

u/Think_Breadfruit2460 6h ago

I think Star Wars isnt that, because it almost always centered itself around the story of Skywalkers. So it ages ages with the cast and there are only so many stories to tell with them.

1

u/Chuck006 Best of 2021 Winner 5h ago

That’s like saying Marvel is only Spider-Man. EU provided plenty of source material. Also if they didn’t shit the bed with the sequels it could have found a third generation.

2

u/TheCVR123YT 7h ago

Or maybe budgets should not be so high on these movies…

Wiki says 82 mil which tbh is not that bad compared to other movies (2017 Power Rangers being made for 100M was insanity…) but if they made this for even 60M that would’ve been more feasible to make anything at all off of this.

Luckily while we may not get another sequel lot of times movies like this are really more just seen as promo for the games by the game studios anyway so it won’t affect the games very much

Us Millennials need a reality check that what we grew up with as kids doesn’t automatically mean kids today like it. That was like our parents talking about how Westerns were the rage when they were kids and being bewildered most of us thought they were “lame and boring” at the time.

The SF6 game producer looked at his company’s internal data and found the average age of a dedicated player fan was 35-45 years old. I don’t mean to alarm folks but Street Fighter, Halo, WoW, even Call of Duty, they’re the “dad rock” of videogames now.

Obviously there are exceptions and younger people still play these games, but they and their peers are more inclined to be playing games they grew up with like Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox, and even those games’ fans are starting to age up.

35

u/Kunair0 12h ago

I don't know why this myth keeps getting repeated.

The SF6 game producer looked at his company’s internal data and found the average age of a dedicated player fan was 35-45 years old.

This is literally not true. In fact, it's the exact opposite. Over 70% of Street Fighters player base is now between 15 and 25 years old, according to data Capcom published in June 2026.

People had been speculating about this demographic shift for a while because it seemed to be happening, because everyone noticed that "hey, this series is starting to get immensely popular with the broccoli hairs." And it turns out they were right.

One of the biggest conversations surrounding Street Fighter in recent years has been how it's one of the only fighting game franchises rapidly expanding its younger audience instead of just catering to the uncs who've been playing for decades.

10

u/BaconKnight 12h ago edited 10h ago

You’re right in that I didn’t put all the context. He said he was looking at the internal data before they released SF6. And you can read it yourself in the IGN interview he did recently this month.

SF6 is huge in Japan currently and with younger folks specifically because the vtuber community there latched onto this game, honestly kinda randomly. I’ve followed the FGC for years and the recent popularity in Japan almost occurred outside the traditional fighting game community fanbase, it wasn’t the Tokidos or Momochis that inspired young people there to pick up the game, it was a bunch of vtubers.

So yes, when I say exceptions, I should say there’s a notable big outlier. I'm sure it will probably do better in Japan with younger folks. But the overall trend I’d argue is still what I said, as evident by the lackluster demographic numbers for younger folks for this movie, and for a bunch of Gen X/Millennial coded revival properties like He Man, hell even Star Wars is losing grip with Gen Alpha.

3

u/FullMotionVideo 7h ago

I feel like SF4 was pretty popular, too. I remember when Twitch was young that I'd watch 24 hour channels like PeacefulJay (an Xbox multiplayer lobby streaming at all hours when streaming was still an expensive commodity).

Of all the things it might be SaltyBet and it's roster of overtuned stolen IP characters usually made internationally that shows that fighting games didn't die globally, just in America. A one-hit kill Kamehameha is called a Mexi-beam for a reason.

2

u/BigOnAnime Studio Ghibli 9h ago

Some have been trying to get new people in general, but then it doesn't work and ends up mainly alienating many long time fans.

See: Dead or Alive 5 Vanilla, Dead or Alive 6, and Dead or Alive 6: Last Round*

DOA harmed itself by becoming a poster-child for Microtransactions Hell. It didn't have that many fans before that, but the people it had would hear stuff like "this month the total of all microtransactions rises to $875" and mentally becoming separated from the entire series.

7

u/Evening-Holiday-8907 7h ago

... Are we the daddies?

4

u/AzSumTuk6891 7h ago

It's not just that.

Apart from anime, the only fighting game film adaptations that have actually achieved some commercial success are Van Damme's "Street Fighter" and Paul W. S. Anderson's "Mortal Kombat" from the 1990s. Everything, and I mean literally everything else based on a fighting game just failed. The other MK movies. The Chun Li movie. The Tekken movies. This is a niche concept to begin with.

Apart from that, there are, like, three commercially successful martial arts tournament movies. Jean-Claude Van Damme stars in two of them, the third is the one that started it all - "Enter the Dragon". This is a niche genre that used to thrive on home video in the 1990s, but was never that popular theatrically.

Which brings me to the actual point - when you're making a niche movie, maybe you should do one of two things:

  1. Keep your budget in check. The direct-to-video tournament movies from the 1990s were cheap. That was why they thrived. In contrast, SF2026 certainly isn't cheap. (The trailers do it a great disservice, btw, the movie itself looks massive.)
  2. Don't drown it in fan service. Don't get me wrong, I loved this movie precisely because of the fan service, but I turned 40 a month ago and the other guys that came to my screening were visibly older than me. (We were three men in the theater, btw, that was it.)

And also - make a complete movie. This one's ending is super open. Apart from the ending - honestly, I thought it was the best live action fighting game adaptation.

3

u/_bonez 7h ago

I believe Capcom is financing 50% of the film. That should play a role in this being considered a success or not for the studio.

7

u/ContinuumGuy 10h ago

TBH this speaks to how damn good Nintendo is with keeping their franchises popular. Mario and PokĂŠmon are still popular as ever.

7

u/BaconKnight 10h ago edited 5h ago

Definitely. They implemented the classic Disney mentality (keep bringing in new, young kids as fans as the older fans age out) better than even modern Disney does at this point.

Going back to movies, this is something George Lucas also believed in and ironically was often criticized for by his aging fans for decades going back all the way to the 80's. Saying he lost it as a filmmaker with RotJ "being for kids" with the "stupid childish Ewoks." I remember during an older Star Wars Celebration when he was on stage and announced the next big Star Wars project would be the Clone Wars TV show which was obviously aimed at younger audiences, and the entire hall full of aging manchildren boo'd him, literally boo'd George Lucas because he was committing the unholy sin in their eyes of... making Star Wars for kids? The lack of self awareness was off the charts.

And here we are decades later and it's clear his investment back then worked. Open the Star Wars subreddit and it's clear we are in the Prequel/Clone Wars generation of fandom. 20-30 year olds who were raised on the Clone Wars tv show when they were kids. And that only happened because Lucasfilm invested in the youth, and that's the only way to keep these franchises going. A lesson Disney acquired Lucasfilm is learning the hard way when they clearly pandered to Boomer/Gen X/older Millennial audience when they took over with The Force Awakens nostalgia bait. Yeah they'll show up once for that nostalgia hit, but you aren't forming the strong powerful childhood memories with the new generation doing that.

The reality is that if any franchise wants to be evergreen, they have to swallow the hard pill of remembering that childhood properties are exactly that. They have to make what might perhaps be the consensus unpopular choice at the time to focus on bringing in younger fans instead of only constantly placating the existing, older diehard fans.

Now don't get me wrong, everyone else is invited along for the ride. I love Star Wars, I enjoy a ton of properties from my childhood. We as older fans and adults can totally jump on the ride. But we have to come to terms with the fact that the ride is no longer specifically catered to us as adults, and it shouldn't be, it should be catered to kids today. Again, we can still totally enjoy it in good fun as adults, but it's for them, the kids.

Like Andy in Toy Story 3, eventually we should be passing on our toys to the new generation. It's so ironic that Gen X and Millennials love that movie, but completely miss the message that hey, we're supposed to be Andy in this situation.

2

u/ContinuumGuy 3h ago

announced the next big Star Wars project would be the Clone Wars TV show which was obviously aimed at younger audiences, and the entire hall full of aging manchildren boo'd him, literally boo'd George Lucas because he was committing the unholy sin in their eyes of... making Star Wars for kids?

And the real ironic thing is that Clone Wars at times did some of the most adult stuff Star Wars would do until Andor came along! Like, there are even memes about all the war crimes and such in it.

3

u/MassiveLie2885 11h ago

Do kids today like Angry Birds? Do they like Ice Age and Shrek? All the stuff with new upcoming movies. Heck do they even like Coco? I'm skeptical the new Monsters. Inc. will perform like a behemoth blockbuster. That IP isn't in the same realm as Inside Out, Toy Story, Incredibles in terms of popularity. It probably was in the 2000's decade but if it were still that way, Monsters at Work would be a must watch for any Pixar fan, and it doesn't seem like that's the case.k

4

u/iceburg77779 10h ago

I think Disney has kept a lot of their older IPs relevant through their theme parks, so something like Monsters Inc still has a lot of younger fans who at least recognize the world and characters. I doubt kids care about stuff like Angry Birds and Ice Age though, as those IPs have been largely inactive for a while.

3

u/MassiveLie2885 9h ago

Oh right that makes sense. I didn't really consider that the theme parks could keep animated movie characters alive in the minds of children.

I kind of felt like Paramount could have an ATLA based them park but it might not work if it's just that, so if they had Angry Birds and Spongebob, Fairly Oddparents, that could be a way to do it. Throw in some Cartoon Network stuff and Ray Gunn.

2

u/iceburg77779 9h ago

Theme Parks are a really difficult investment, having theming strong enough to build up brands the same way Disney and Universal do is expensive, so if you’re a company like Paramount who needs to cut costs, it’s hard to justify a project like that even if it would improve the brand strength long term. Both WB and Paramount had theme park ownerships that they dropped during the 90s and 2000s for that reason, Universal was really the only company who was willing to stick around and I’d argue it has paid off, though even then they sometimes cheap out on projects that use their in-house IPs.

2

u/MassiveLie2885 8h ago

I dunno it if has improved but DreamWorks Land seemed like it wasn't really putting in a strong presence when it opened. I think that's around a couple of years now.

-1

u/FullMotionVideo 8h ago

Except Street Fighter, Halo, etc show up in Fortnite and other places. And kids still like Sonic and Mario just as millennials did when they were kids.

And millennials still don't mind shelling out for entertainment, as GTA6 will demonstrate.

What's changed is the young adult market of teenagers etc. They don't have 9/11 looming over their adolescence to make Trooper "Guns" McAwesome a relevant figure like the COD generation, and many are like 1960s parents complaining about the sexual deviancy of culture today. I don't know if it's too many years of Republican administrations trying to push the ten commandments and abstinence education into schools, but some of them are such cloistered moralizers that you'd think they grew up in Gilead.

-5

u/Horror_Post6822 8h ago

I think the next game that i can see getting a reality check is Pokemon or Zelda. Pokemon has already been getting replaced by Palworld in popularity. No one cares about Wind and Wave cause it'll be slop. And Zelda is going to be crushed by GTA 6.

The drop might be equal to or worse than MK II. Either way, mid to upper 60 percent drop is happening.

0

u/DripSnort 11h ago

I mean all they can do is a make a good movie faithful to the subject and imo they did it. I couldn’t have asked for more

9

u/SpiritualAd9102 10h ago

They really didn’t. I’ve played all the games and watched most of the media around it and never has Bison been a pathetic, foot sniffing pervert, Guile been a wise cracking loud mouth, Akuma being damseled or Ryu being saved from the Satsui no Hadou with the power of What’s Up by Four Non Blondes.

And even if you ignore the characters being so different they’re essentially OC’s in SF costumes, it’s a movie about a fighting tournament where half the fights take place off screen.

1

u/DripSnort 10h ago

It’s not based on all of the media and all of the games it’s pretty clearly just laying foundation based on the original couple. If you think Street Fighter has super deep lore you’re kidding yourself. It has deep lore if you include 40 years of it just because that’s how it works when you add more stuff every couple years. This movie was never taking most of that into account for an under 2 hour film. If you don’t like it that’s cool but as someone who has also played every game and watched all the media I feel it did do a good job in what it tried to do

-1

u/Horror_Post6822 8h ago edited 8h ago

OR...Or here is the thing: Nobody cares about Street Fighter anymore. No, a bunch of morons on EVO don't count. There is a reason why MK and Smash Bros are way more popular than any Fighting game favored by the FGC.

If i were Capcom and i was looking at the results of this movie, i'd just give SF6 the boot, cancel Mega Man game cause no one cares about him either, and focus on IPs people still like like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter.

2

u/SpiritualAd9102 7h ago

I don’t agree with most of this, but I’ll just add that I think it’s really funny that Capcom distanced themselves from the financially and critically acclaimed Resident Evil movie, then apparently co-financed and heavily promoted this garbage.

1

u/chandler55 1h ago

capcom licensed RE to constantin film in 1997 so they basically have no part of it

its weird, its kind of like the sony spiderman license, this film company keeps the license as long as they make re films

1

u/prodij18 2h ago

Are you joking? Because you are absurdly, laughably wrong.

SF6 has sold over 7 million copies, is one of the fastest selling Street Fighter games ever and is basically on pace with the last MK game. In fact it almost undoubtedly has made more money than MK1 as it's never been on sale for $10 like MK 1 routinely is and hit it's maximum concurrent Steam players 3 years after the game came out (which is double MK1's maximum concurrent players and has only dropped since the game released.)

15

u/DeweyFinn21 12h ago

This feels like a part 1 of a two part book adaptation. It just stops somewhere because they got to a two hour runtime, but it's not a complete story.

7

u/MassiveLie2885 9h ago

The Wuthering Heights movie from earlier this year is basically half the book. The second half is the next generation. People might not want to see that. It's mostly characters being bitter or hurting others until the end.

45

u/Significant-Cloud-19 13h ago

MK II got a 72% recommend in comparison.

u/onehotoneshot 13h ago

Why do Latinos and Hispanics make up the most demographic?

29

u/SpiritualAd9102 10h ago edited 10h ago

Fighting games famously have a massive audience in Latin America. I live in a very Latino / Hispanic area and it’s one of the only places in America with an active arcade culture. I’m also surrounded by fighting game tournaments regularly.

I know this is anecdotal, but fighting games have always been big in my local demographics, including during the death of the genre in the late 90s / early 2000s. I was so insulated that I was legit surprised when think pieces would be written about the death of fighting games / arcades during that period since we never fully experienced it.

16

u/TheCVR123YT 7h ago

Latinos (myself included) love fighting games bad haha

Street Fighter Tekken Mortal Kombat in the US have to be probably the most popular. Now in Lat AM you also have King of Fighters which is super popular.

8

u/Shurikenkage 9h ago

Because like in Asia arcades are literally in every neighborhoods stores, drugstores or market corner. Theres tournaments there or online each week fighting games are huge in latin america

8

u/distastef_ll 7h ago edited 3h ago

They’re the fastest growing demographic in US. They’re set to become the largest in the next 30 years.

Edit: Latinos are estimated to become the largest demographic in 2060 NOT 2040

3

u/obvious-but-profound 4h ago

That’s not true about them being set to become the largest demographic 15 years from now

1

u/distastef_ll 3h ago

2040 was the original estimate.

Edit: Nevermind, the estimates were 2060. NOT 2040. But they’re still the fastest growing.

-3

u/Lazzen 9h ago

Young urban demographics probably

11

u/Dangerman1337 13h ago

That's pretty dire for a small opening, If it's lower than high 60s for the drop I'd be shocked.

29

u/Kazaloogamergal 13h ago

So Street Fighter has a worse posttrack and a worse cinemascore than MK2. They really need the international audience to pull through.

22

u/newjackgmoney21 13h ago

What, wait? Lmao, is that kids under 12 the lowest rating ever reported by Deadline? Kids are like its trash and I agree.

18

u/El_Cance_R 12h ago

I think it's because surprisingly not a very kid friendly movie. Lots of sexual jokes, that even I found off-putting for this kind of movie

5

u/Dwayne30RockJohnson 7h ago

Isn’t most of that stuff gonna fly over kids heads? I’d imagine what matters to kids is it entertaining/interesting and are there cool characters.

3

u/SpiritualAd9102 7h ago

To be fair, it’s none of those things.

But no, the perverted stuff is pretty obvious. Chun Li’s partner dressing up her photos in skimpy outfits, characters constantly commenting on Chun’s body, her partner getting a boner watching her fight, Bison sniffing feet, a zoom in on Chun’s chest through a steamy shower, only to transition to E Honda’s nipples when the Steam clears…

It’s about as overt as you can get while maintaining a PG-13 rating.

•

u/roygbivnekron 32m ago

This will anger soccer moms, kids dont give bad rating over things not being kid-friendly, they just found the rest of the movie lame on unengaging in general

7

u/SpiritualAd9102 10h ago

It was clear from the casting, but seeing it really shows how this was trying to appeal to Rogansphere chuds.

4

u/Dirtybrd 9h ago

Oof. If little boys don't like your fighting movie, something is wrong.

7

u/nicedogeetcup 13h ago

If they do a sequel I hope they hire people to do a proper editing and better writting. Acting was ok ish, the rest was pure dog crap and cringe. Most disappointing movie of the year for me

12

u/Dulcolax 12h ago

Terrible for Street Fighter, legs will be awful. The 1994 version was so bad it's good, but this one tried way too hard. It tries to be faithful but it ends up being forced, almost a parody.

The actor who played Bison in this new movie was terrible. Raul Julia's Bison would literally eat him for breakfast on Tuesday. They even tried to repeat Raul Julia's tuesday line in this one, which was completely uncalled for.

The 1994 movie was bad, but it was organic, natural. The new one is bad and thinks it's cool.

0

u/Chrizwald 10h ago

Raul was not right for Bison. David killed it. You can be nostalgic, but don't lie to yourself

8

u/SpiritualAd9102 10h ago edited 10h ago

Talk about lying to yourself. I don’t blame David, but Bison was terrible. Mostly because they took one of the most intimidating and imposing characters in the franchise and turned him into a pathetic, feet sniffing pervert who calls people “weak sauce”.

Julia also wasn’t right for what Bison is now, but before Alpha, he was a super powered, skinny dictator. Julia gave the character enough gravitas where you believed people would follow him or be intimidated by him. I kept wondering why David’s Bison wasn’t being bullied by his minions.

5

u/Just1Mom2023 12h ago

It is PG 13. Isn't the whole point that it should not be for kids under 12 in first place?

11

u/Heavy-Possession2288 9h ago

Plenty of PG-13 movies are aimed at and quite popular with people below the age of 13. MPA ratings are just a suggestion (and are fairly inconsistent anyways). Would you really argue something like the newer Star Wars movies, Bumblebee, or Ant-Man isn’t aimed largely at kids under 13?

8

u/SyllabubOk5283 9h ago

Thing is, Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li are videogame all-stars. They’re in the likes of Smash and Fortnite. So, there’s a good chance some familes went into this going like: “Heyyy, its those characters in Smash! Let’s check it out.” only to be severely confused by the movie’s semi-erotic energy.

3

u/Heavy-Possession2288 9h ago

Fortnite and some of the Smash games are also rated 13+. The rating doesn’t stop stuff from being popular with younger audiences, it’s just a suggestion.

2

u/TheCVR123YT 7h ago

Cammy ironically is as well. My brother was really excited to see her bc she’s in Fortnite

•

u/roygbivnekron 29m ago

Absolutely no one in the younger audiences get off-put by ratings since these were a thing otherwise they wouldnt obsess with horror either, they are for the parents just like spider-man not punching people in the 90s cartoon wasnt requested by the kids, but parents dont know what smash is anymore than sf. Smash and Fortnite are also 13+ but then again a redditor not being confidently wrong like trying to blame a bad movie flopping on having a weird moral outrage over bad jokes would break the matrix

3

u/Horror_Post6822 8h ago

Lol, Fatality. Mortal Kombat 2 wins.

As the far more superior game series should. Let's just face it. Nobody likes SF anymore. If i was Capcom right now, i'd be thinking about maybe canning SF6 after this season and devoting my energy towards new IPs and IPs people still like like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter.

1

u/chandler55 1h ago

sf6 is still very popular in japan

2

u/Kazaloogamergal 7h ago

I wonder how this movie would have turned out reviews wise if they had kept the good directors they had on board at first?

3

u/SpiritualAd9102 7h ago

Maybe avoid people who put their thinly veiled fetishes all over it.

2

u/Kazaloogamergal 7h ago

That sounds like a smart idea.

1

u/prodij18 5h ago

I haven’t seen the movie. What thinly veiled fetishes?

1

u/SpiritualAd9102 4h ago edited 4h ago

Aside from the constant sexualization of Chun Li, (they gave her a partner who dresses up photos of her in different sexy outfits behind her back and who gets an erection watching her fight. Also, almost all of Cammy’s very little dialogue is about Chun’s body), they made Bison a pervert with a foot fetish who catches one of Chun Li’s kicks and stops to sniff her foot mid-fight.

Even Chun-Li? (Haven’t seen the movie yet, so I’m not sure how bad she is)

0

She seems look a good actress just not as chun li, but it’s subjective

6

u/SpiritualAd9102 7h ago

Especially Akuma. Dump all the stunt casting.

In fact, it’s awfully optimistic to assume this is getting a sequel, but a potential sequel should be fully animated. Cut the live action before it does even more damage.
