Question Elective c-section?

Everywhere online tells me that you can get elective c-sections for mental health reasons in Ontario, but my midwife told me it’s not possible to get one without a medical reason. I’m unsure if she meant just in Brantford or in general, but I’m curious if anybody in Brantford or the surrounding area (Kitchener, Hamilton, Cambridge, etc.) has gotten an elective c-section ? I have not actually asked my OB about it yet since I do not see him until the 20th, but I plan to.

I’m not looking for some kind of lecture on c-section vs vaginal births, I have done my research, I just want to know if anybody around my area has been able to get one.

I would talk to your OB/Doctor as they will know or be able to refer you and be able to refer you to the appropriate resources if necessary and lecture you or not as you want. Mental health IS a medical reason so if you have a mental health doctor they might be able to talk to you about it as well. C-Sections are considered major surgeries so I would expect a lot of push back either way.

I had an elective c-section in Brantford at BGH. I didn’t use a midwife though. And I didn’t even have mental health reasons for it. It was just my preference and what I got.

Your OB should be able to schedule C section if that is what you want. I am not sure what your midwife is talking about as it's your body. Your choice.

My first was an unplanned C-section as my body would not allow me to do so naturally and I wished I had gone with it in the beginning. However, my second I went with a C-section and do not regret it

I think your midwife was just confused. A midwife is for a vaginal birth so they would only suggest a C-section if it was an emergency. And at that point it's not being performed by them.

An OB can schedule a c-section for you, as long as the surgical process won’t endanger you or the child (for example if you have an existing condition which would put you at serious risk if you were given anesthesia, or likely to have risky post op complications).

Midwives are lovely but they are not doctors.
Midwives manage normal, low-risk pregnancies and vaginal deliveries.

I know it is exhausting to advocate for yourself over and over, so don’t be afraid to loop in your partner or a friend to assist with the advocating.

I had an elective c-section at BGH this past April. I had an OB and she scheduled it for me. I told her I had a traumatic birth with my first (shoulder dystocia) and she didn’t question my choice or try to talk me out of it.

I have no idea if they allow this, but I just wanted to say that I’ve had 2 c sections in the last 3 years, one emergency, one scheduled and I loved both of them. If you’re looking for some positive c section stories, or advice feel free to PM me

Talk to an actual doctor and not a midwife
