Do you Think Gretchen and Elliot made good on their word and got Walt Jr. The money Walt left?

I always wonder if they heard about walts passing on the news if they would assume the contract killers were uninterested and called his bluff, or if they did it. I can't tell. I can see how narritively it would be interesting to have had it all been for nothing and they turned the money into the police. Much more satisfying to believe he got it to him though..

So what do you think?

Walt explicitly told them that the hitman will be out there watching them „whatever happens to [him] today“.

Of course they know that possibly it is a bluff, but why would they risk not giving the money to Walt Jr? They seemed pretty terrified.

Why would they risk everything they own to launder Walt's drug money when they could just write a check to Walt Jr and no one would know the difference? Same for turning the money over to the DEA. Who's going to tell anyone about it? We don't get a notice in the news every time the DEA confiscates drug money

58

u/bigdave41 10h ago

Technically speaking they can just give Walt's kids the equivalent amount of their own money and then use his cash over multiple years. It's got to be a lot easier to launder/use up $9 million or so without suspicion, when you own a company valued at $2 billion.

I don't think Walt really meant that his kids have to receive those specific bank notes, only that they receive the amount of money he made and nothing from Elliot or Gretchen's charity.

14

u/Current_Tea6984 10h ago

Why would Gretchen and Elliott risk everything they own to launder a paltry ten million when they could just write the check from their own legal funds? I doubt they even mind taking care of Walt's family for him. But they don't need or want his drug money to do it

9

u/Odin043 10h ago

He's agreeing with you.

But also they don't know if Walts money might be tainted. Probably wouldn't want to risk using it to pay for a pizza.

18

u/bigdave41 9h ago

Well sure - from one perspective, if they decide to give Walt's family an equivalent amount from their bank account, the cash effectively becomes theirs, and if they want to then burn $9 million of "their" cash it's entirely up to them. It all seems like semantics but money is fungible, Walt might see that as giving their own money and destroying his, but as he'll be dead at that point it doesn't really make much material difference anyway.

My point is that if they wanted to use that cash, they could do it far more easily and without arousing suspicion than any of Walt's family could. A few parties here and there where they pay a few hundred grand for catering in cash, buy some cars, go on fancy holidays etc. It might be seen as a little eccentric but no one's going to report two billionaires to the IRS for paying in cash, they could spread it out over 20 years if they wanted to

The hitmen would be checking in on them man. If a drug kingpin says he hired to hitmen to kill you if you don’t do something, it’s generally a good idea to take his word for it. Even if it ends up being a bluff

8

u/Current_Tea6984 13h ago

How would the hitmen check up on them? Do they have access to the company's financial records?

11

u/lilindividual 12h ago

That was what walt said the hitmen would do which is a pretty credible threat. Also they could be listening at any moment whether or not they could check records. Potentially being watched is terrifying for someone who feels like they have something to hide (aka not having given money). Either way the hitmen could easily keep an eye on flynn and skylar (in theory if the hitmen were real and really good) to make sure they actually got the money.

3

u/Current_Tea6984 12h ago

They will just write Jr a check with their own money and give Walt's money to the DEA. The "hitmen" would never know the difference

10

u/lilindividual 12h ago

That’s a weird plan dude. Why would they risk it when they have no idea what the hitmen are capable of. Also laundering 10 million as multihundred millionaire isn’t that hard to do over a long stretch of time. I feel like you keep looking for reasons they would try to cheat the hitmen. The least risky path here is to just do what walt said.

18

u/TheHammerToes 13h ago

I mean they can just burn the money and give it to him with there own money if they worry about launder the money.

2

u/Current_Tea6984 13h ago

Right. But the point is that they will not be giving Walt's money to Walt Jr

22

u/KausGo 13h ago

Walt's condition is about the amount, not the actual, physical notes, which Jr won't be getting anyway. Walt told them to establish a trust, which means the money would be going into a bank anyway and banks don't give you the same physical money you deposit.

Obviously Walt knows that and he only wants to make sure that Jr. gets the amount.

4

u/Current_Tea6984 12h ago

Walt specified that they were to give Jr his money and not theirs. There was no way they were going to establish a trust with unlaundered drug money. Ten million dollars coming out of nowhere would raise questions with the IRS

11

u/KausGo 12h ago

Once again, giving "his" money is about the amount Jr. gets, not the physical money itself. They could write Jr. a check fro that amount and Walt would've been fine with that.

-2

u/Current_Tea6984 12h ago

It was totally about his money. That's why he went to all the trouble to bring the cash to the house

3

u/KausGo 12h ago

Its not like he could've deposited it in a bank and given them a banker's draft.

3

u/Current_Tea6984 11h ago

No, he couldn't. And they can't just bring it to the bank and turn it into a trust fund either. The cash is worthless.

Walt Jr will be getting charity from Gretchen and Elliott

3

u/pm_social_cues 11h ago

Yes, Otherwise it’d be a whole different thing if he went there and threatened them and then said “give Walt jr a bunch of your money”.

But are we stupid? There were no hitmen. Gretchen and Elliot don’t know that but Walter dies a few days after that event. And that is national news. So why would they think the hitmen were still loyal to a dead person?

3

u/TheHammerToes 12h ago

if was hitman they wouldn't trace each bill they would only care that jr got paid.

7

u/Unsolven 11h ago

Money is fungible, that’s like its defining characteristic. If Walt gave them an amount of money and they gave the same to Walt Jr, it’s the same as giving him Walt’s money. Walt’s drug money doesn’t have special properties.

1

u/Current_Tea6984 11h ago

They will not keep Walt's money. It will go to the DEA or be burned. Their money will go to Jr. It will be charity

4

u/Unsolven 11h ago

Assuming they pay Walt Jr out of their checking account or wherever, the pile of cash is their money now to do with as they please. It was an equal exchange. If they want to burn it or turn it over to the DEA that’s their right to do whatever they want with their own money.

•

u/Orange639 40m ago

The average person isnt going to get news that the DEA confiscated money. But if you're specifically hired to watch two people and see what they do with their illegal money, then its a different case. The hitmen would know if any contact with the police is made.

Also I do believe 9-10 million dollars being confiscated would be newsworthy. The show starts with Hank making a far smaller bust and it hit the local news.

3

u/Stevenitrogen 11h ago

They have the means to go into hiding or at least, move to a much more secure location if they believe the threat. I think they get freaked out and call the cops as soon as they see Walt and the bloodbath in tomorrow's papers.

The other option is, the bloodbath freaks them out, and do the trust thing with their own money and figure that's gotta be close enough. They die with a barrel of cash in the basement.

Walt left the company on his own accord. It rubbed him the wrong way when he found out that his girlfriend-at-the-time and investor was already from a rich family ("Little rich girl, just adding to your millions.") But Gretchen and Elliot never harbored any ill-will towards Walt, besides them maybe being upset that he left the company so early.

•

u/AtheistComic 2h ago

This hits hard man.

24

u/Far_Orange_8492 13h ago

I think so yeah. For all they knew, Walt's empire had a lot of players that would act upon his wishes even if he wasn't around. Better to just quickly give Flynn the money and wash their hands of Walt once and for all.

20

u/Ichgebibble 13h ago

Gretchen and Elliot seem like they wanted to do the right thing and giving it to Flynn was more “right” than turning it into the police

5

u/pm_social_cues 11h ago

But it was drug money. How is that “more right”?

11

u/Ichgebibble 11h ago

They love Walt and by extension, his family. Giving the money to Flynn was Walt’s dying wish and Flynn could now have the life Walt wanted him to. Turning the money in would’ve been the moral choice but giving it to Flynn was the loving choice

3

u/FocacciaHusband 9h ago

The most "right" thing would be to turn the money into the police, so it can be used to benefit society, and then they use their own, legal money to support Walt's family to the amount of the money they turned over. Essentially, a huge charitable donation to make sure they don't break the law and also help out society in the meantime.

15

u/ShhweadyBallz 13h ago

They most definitely did

Remember ..... the 2 best hit men west of the Mississippi

9

u/Aihonen 13h ago

Vince says they would

11

u/Impressive_Touch1118 13h ago

I think they would have sought legal advice and would have gone with whatever their lawyer told them more than likely to go to the police.

I think after that they would go one of two ways....completely dissociate from any connection with Walt ie Walt Junior OR they would have quietly given him some financial help with their own money towards his education.

5

u/Stevenitrogen 13h ago

They called the cops as soon as they saw Walt in the news.

5

u/Few_Run_9112 12h ago

They were self-preserving at heart; yes, I think they did.

4

u/Graveyard_Zombie 7h ago

As soon as they learn Walt is dead, they went straight to the FBI. There’s no way they would hold on to the money long enough to give it to Jr.

7

u/klippDagga 13h ago

I totally picture G and E as both having different ideas of what they should do and getting into a fierce debate or two about it.

Gretchen was probably of the mind that they should involve law enforcement and Elliot wanted to do as Walt wanted.

I think E was kind of a little wimpy so he caved in the end when G threatened to withhold the nookie.

12

u/HRHArthurCravan 12h ago

I thought the opposite. Elliott is indeed a wimp, but also devious. He was trying to shine Walt on knowing they would hand the cash over and tell the police they saw him the second Walt left their house.

Gretchen had more complex feelings and was a stronger personality. I think she did actually feel some guilt about GM, and some sense of connection to Walt, as well as his blameless kids.

In a way, Walt dying the next day makes it an easier decision to give Jr the cash. Walt went out in a hail of bullet, this was his dying wish, his kids do not deserve a blighted life, plus they are scared.

I could see Elliott trying to advocate that they hand over the money, and spend a fortune on security. Gretchen however develops a strange determination to see it reaches Jr and Holly. And since Gretchen is the more forceful character, she wins out.

5

u/klippDagga 12h ago

Also a well reasoned argument. Thanks.

4

u/gigi-kent 11h ago

Gretchen and Elliot? Fierce debate? That's never happening.

4

u/EvilLibrarians 12h ago

Gretchen saw Walt’s true personality in the diner in season two and didn’t inform police supposedly

Not to say she knew much but she had been sorta intimidated multiple times

4

u/PhilParent 12h ago

Gillingan did confirm they did, it's canon.

3

u/Old_Community_5128 7h ago

If they were terrified enough to not try to physically fight fragile and feeble Walt, they were definitely sold with the laser pointers

3

u/MattyDarce 11h ago

3

u/dubler2020 9h ago

No way to know for sure, not even with computers.

3

u/TheLionOfJudah101 9h ago

they hid it and didn't touch it and made a trust for him and gave him money that way.

3

u/mrbeck1 7h ago

Yes, they believed in his evil enough to believe the threat he made.

3

u/n1nejay 6h ago

I do believe they did. There’s nothing to make me think they would have kept Walt’s money.

2

u/epidipnis 12h ago

I hear they bought the kids a car wash.

2

u/11711510111411009710 11h ago

Yes. They clearly do believe that there are hitman that will kill them if they don't.

2

u/kduda04 10h ago

100%.

2

u/Full_Lawfulness8263 10h ago

In an alternate universe, RJ Mitte is really Walt Jr where he had the money from Graymatter and didn’t have problems with his financial advisor. All is well.

2

u/Normal-Donkey-7976 9h ago

Walt said he sent 2 hit men to watch over them and if Walt Jr. didn’t get the money, they would randomly get killed. Walt at this point snuck into their house and was one of the scariest/dangerous men alive with millions of dollars. They had every reason to believe he was telling the truth which gives every reason to cooperate and give them the money. Especially since you could already see how scared and unconfident they were when they saw an old man in their home despite having a knife advantage and because at the end of the day, they still somewhat had a connection with Walt and his family and know their living condition so it would make sense.

2

u/ThunderBurrn Cook 💠 8h ago

Well they would have had to! Else they'd have to face the worst assasins of Albuquerque with their laser guns 🤣

2

u/Pinkman505 Meth Producer:redditgold: 6h ago

He got the money and I doubt he knew it was from them. They're already known associates of Walters and want to keep their distance away from them. 100% they've done some shady shit like Beneke and reporting a mill plus to the cops giving them the whole assassination story is probably gonna make the cops start looking into them. Some guy like Saul for the rich handled everything.

2

u/taker25-2 6h ago

I like to think they did until something proves otherwise.

5

u/Fast-Secretary-7406 10h ago

My belief is that once they knew Walt was dead, they went to the police and turned over the money, but then helped out Skyler and the kids in a significant way (like maybe they gave Skyler a high paying job - essentially closing the circle from what they tried to do for Walt)

11

u/cavalgada1 9h ago

There is no universe where those two are brave enough to go to the police or keep any connection to the whites.

They would give JR the money and never contact them again

10

u/TheOneWhoSendsLetter 8h ago

Nope, LOL. They were terrified of the assassins.

•

u/unstablegenius000 3h ago

Once Walt was dead, the hitmen would have no reason to honor the deal. Gretchen & Elliot were naive but not stupid. Their lawyers would have advised them to turn the money over to the cops. It’s not as if they needed it.

•

u/certifiedbpdqueen Methhead 3h ago

I really don’t think they would do that. Walt explicitly told them word for word that “whatever happens tonight, they still get this money” (meaning that he knew they were going to find out Walt was dead and that still wouldn’t change things). He tricked them both into believing that he had hitmen on his side who would still be alive after he died and would still follow through on killing Gretchen and Elliot when they weren’t expecting it if his family didn’t receive the money. So I don’t think they would just run to the cops and prevent the White family from getting the money that was coming to them because they were obviously terrified and paranoid.

3

u/KarltonPeaks 10h ago

Skyler likely went to jail. She would at least be unhireable. Gray Matter would have wanted to distance themselves as much as possible from Walt.

7

u/clocksteadytickin 9h ago

It was mentioned in better call saul that skyler got a deal from the DA. The one walter laid out before he died.

•

u/Poodleape2 1h ago

My guess is they would burn the money and give them an equivalent amount. Rather than risk trying to launder it. If not that they go to the cops once he died. I think Skylar is able to avoid jail do to the location of the bodies but likely they end up homeless or having to move across the country and change their names. I doubt Walt even gets to go to college.

•

u/False_Cry_4185 1h ago

I think that’s one of the things that made Walt a maniac. He would have let his family starve if it didn’t come from him, his pride was his worst enemy. He did what he did for himself, he used his family as an excuse. I think when he died, Gretchen and Elliot, turned his money over. I also think Gretchen and Elliot probably gave Skylar money or paid for both kids educations. The thing is that Walt knew that he could have asked them from the beginning and known his family would be ok, but he couldn’t demean himself so he used it as his excuse for fighting. He probably prolonged his life for at least a year, but what his ego cost them is significant!

1

u/Brmbo777 8h ago

I mean how would anyone know since it's not real and there's no script that can answer your really stupid question

-2

u/GunMuratIlban 12h ago

Definitely not. Even if they were somehow stupid enough to do that, they'd get arrested soon after and the money would be confiscated.

The Schwartz were already under suspicion due to their ties to Walter White. Which they ended up publically denying it, both his ties to the company and their personal ties to him.

Now you expect these two to hand over 10 million dollars to Walt's son and call it liberal guilt??? Look, if Walt approach these two in a friendly manner and asked them to pay for his son's college, I guess they could go through with it.

But 10M is a small fortune, not the sort of money you can move freely and certainly not to a deceased drug lord's son. Thanks to daddy's actions, Walter Jr. is no longer a regular teenager. The law enforcement would know some of Walt's money could find its way to his family. Elliot and Gretchen would never be able to explain why they all of a sudden decided to hand out that sort of money.

Sure they would be scared; but they'd come to their senses, talk to their lawyers and contact the law enforcement.

3

u/FLiP_J_GARiLLA 11h ago

Definitely did. This isn't real-life, its a fictional universe, and the creator of the show confirmed they did.

4

u/GunMuratIlban 11h ago edited 11h ago

That's just lazy writing then, because it doesn't make any sense.

I mean sure, let's consider Elliot and Gretchen to be complete idiots and the law enforcement totally clueless...

How about Walter Jr. and Skyler? They're just gonna think the Schwartz family are handing them 10 fucking million out of nowhere?

1

u/FLiP_J_GARiLLA 10h ago

Lots of things in the show "don't make sense"..that's what's fun about fiction

1

u/GunMuratIlban 10h ago

Of course, but there are levels to this.

Gus wanting to work with Walt and Jesse don't make sense; but you can sell that. This one though? It's just downright stupid from all directions.

Again, even if we were to assume the Schwartz somehow found a way without alerting the authorities, I can't wrap my head around Walter Jr. and Skyler ever going through with it.

The whole reason why Walt couldn't give that money directly was because they didn't want his blood money. 10 million isn't the kind of money that can go as "hey guys, we just want to help you get back on your feet".

3

u/FLiP_J_GARiLLA 10h ago

More like: "sorry we fucked your Dad out of his rightfully owed portion of the funds from our ridiculously profitable business" money so here's something to try and make life much easier despite not having a father anymore

•

u/Spez_is-a-nazi 5h ago

This is exactly what would happen, I dont know why you are getting downvoted. The police would be watching the finances of the White’s like a hawk and would know if they got an unexplained windfall. It’s even established in the series that the DEA goes after bank accounts of the relatives of people like Mike that they suspect are involved in the meth manufacturing. Maybe Elliot and Gretchen would just burn the cash and eat the cost of making a public donation so there was no question of where the money came from. Or maybe it was Walt trying to set them up so they would get arrested while making it look like he was trying to help out his family, even to himself.

•

u/Alzoura 5h ago

they have a personal connection to walt and his family, a motive to give the money (college and walts death) and a company worth billions. Of course they could hand over the money
