My friends and I have been getting multiple "yada-yadda" texts from the Scott campaign, and so, we've just taken to texting back, "Amanda Janoo For Governor". Maybe it doesn't do a thing, but we get a laugh out of it and it's super satisfying.

I built something for Burlington that I think is really, really cool and useful.

It's more-so an accumulation of things I built morphed into one.
So I’ve building a bunch of newsfeeds for Burlington called the All Day Feed. It's basically a better algorithm so you don't have to see all the rage-baiting content from most platform's algorithm and ads. Anyone remember what RSS feeds are?

It has local news as it breaks, tonight’s showtimes, food deals and late night spots, run clubs and game nights, a spin button for when you can’t decide what to do, every thrift shop on one map, local TV, a habit tracker that grows little trees, and a bunch of Burlington games. The food tab also pulls in the “where should I eat” threads from this sub, with links back to them.

guide.btownbrief.com/all-day

Still a work in progress. Let me know what you think, if you hate it or what you’d want in it!

Plus size/super beginner workout?

Hi - hoping for no hate on this post but😅I am 25F, have never been into working out, I’ve always been out of shape and overweight. I’ve recently lost 40lbs and really need to start moving my body more as I continue my weight loss journey. Obviously I know that gaining/maintaining muscle mass is important, but in general I just need to move my body more. I have a gym membership I pay for and don’t use because I truly just despise going to a gym. Does anyone have any recommendations for truly beginner classes maybe? I’d LOVE to take classes from another plus size person who understands the struggle and respects the perseverance, however that isn’t necessary. I just really want to find a way that I enjoy moving my body so it doesn’t feel like a chore😭

Sunglasses all week and no rain at all, with a quilt sew in for charity, the CityPlace Phase 2 meeting, a talk from a Lime founding team member, an improv jam, Gaelic Storm and a new memoir at Phoenix Books, plus Main Street closing, a Myrtle Beach flight, UVM Promise growing and Burlyaxe closing

Happy Monday, Burlington. Soak up today, because it's the warmest day of the week, sunny with a high near 62 and a light south breeze, and one more good chance to catch the foliage even with color past peak in a lot of places. A dry cold front slides through tonight without a drop of rain, so Tuesday turns mostly sunny and cooler with a high near 56 and a north wind. Wednesday stays sunny with a high near 55 and Thursday is mostly sunny near 57, while the nights drop to around 34 midweek with a few frosty mornings. There's no rain anywhere in the forecast!

Monday has The Hive Writing Collective at Wild Meadows Books & Café in Williston, May Day's legendary patty melts at Foam's first ever Monday Meltdown to celebrate their new collaboration beer, Vermont Reads with former Cartoonist Laureate Tillie Walden at CCV in Winooski on the very first Vermont Libraries Day, and trivia at the Monkey House. Tuesday starts with the Helping Hands Quilt Sew In at Yankee Pride Quilts, where you can help finish quilts for local charities without a sewing machine, then Traditional Tuesday at Mesmer Kava, French conversation and a crafters drop in at Fletcher Free, a 5K run from Burlington Beer Company, figure drawing at Karma Bird House, Dad Guild's night of rock climbing at Petra Cliffs and the CityPlace Phase 2 meeting on the rest of the old mall. Tuesday night has All Them Witches with Emma Ruth Rundle at Higher Ground, Rehash in the Showcase Lounge, a free bill at the Monkey House, swing dancing at North Star, Dead Is Alive at Einstein's and trivia at Queen City Brewery. Wednesday starts with the mayor's South District meetup at Zero Gravity and a native tree planting at the Intervale, then our own pickup basketball at Gutterson and trivia at Citizen Cider, a JumpStart talk with a founding team member of Lime, the Zine Potluck at Fletcher Free, Stories from the Vermont Queer Archives in Essex Junction, Bluegrass Nights at Foam, a $5 spooky improv night, a poetry open mic, the Ribbit Review song circle, West Coast Swing, the last waterfront Ghostwalk of the season, the ABBA tribute Mania at the Flynn and Jazz Night with Ray Vega. Thursday brings a free neonics documentary at Shelburne Farms, our trivia night at Four Quarters, Sam Jay at the Vermont Comedy Club, Weekend 2 of the Williston One Acts, a memoir launch at Phoenix Books, Gaelic Storm at Higher Ground, Bored Teachers at the Flynn, The Way Out ski film at Outdoor Gear Exchange, a roller derby learn to skate session and the Funk Jam at The 126. The full newsletter has every event with times, locations, and links, plus a lot more to pick from.

In the news: today is Vermont's first Vermont Libraries Day, the state is using a helicopter to help restore the Spruce and Elmore fire towers, and South Burlington's OnLogic is being bought by Omron for $675 million with its headquarters and jobs staying put and a big bonus for every employee. A month in, drivers are giving the diverging diamond in Colchester positive reviews, Seven Days found great new Mexican food at Doma Bar and in the University Mall food court, and a cannabis pilot could bring legal sales to festivals and farmers markets. On the harder side, a lawsuit says Winooski police broke a man's neck during an arrest. Young voters are organizing at UVM and Middlebury, and two constitutional amendments are on the November ballot. Quick hits cover Main Street closing for three days, a new Breeze flight to Myrtle Beach, UVM Promise expanding, a museum of Burlington history in the works and Burlyaxe closing its Burlington space. The newsletter has the full context, quotes, and commentary, along with more articles not listed here.

From our corner, we are a Meetup group too, and everyone is welcome at Btown Brief IRL. Pickup basketball is Wednesday at 5:30 indoors at UVM's Gutterson Fieldhouse with a $12 day pass, Tony will save a table for 8 at Citizen Cider trivia Wednesday at 6:15, and Jon is restarting our every other week trivia night at Four Quarters in Winooski on Thursday at 6. After that, our movie night for the new Elizabeth Holmes documentary, You Can See Everything, is Friday at 7 at the Majestic 10 in Williston, and Coffee Club with Social Pulse is Saturday at 10 at Zero Gravity.

There is also a news quiz, the full events calendar, and UVM Athletics, where men's hockey handed No. 11 BU its first loss before falling in overtime, and men's soccer came back to beat UNH.

What kind of trick or treating traffic do you get?

For the last couple of years in the ONE, we’ve only gotten a handful of trick or treaters on Halloween, so I usually just put out a bowl of candy now which feels kind of lame (one year my bowl was stolen, which was even more lame).

When I was a kid the Five Sisters neighborhood was the larder for full size candy bars and great porch decorations.

Has Burlington moved to the trunk or treat stuff, or are some neighborhoods still getting a good amount of traffic?

Need to find a shop that will wire wheel undercarriage before undercoating.

I’m getting a little frustrated and I’ve been unable to find a shop that will wire wheel and scrape rust and some key areas before applying undercoating. Are there any shops around here that do that work, I would think that this is a common problem. My frame doesn’t have much rust on it, but I would like to keep it that way and address these couple spots prior to treatment.

Happening Wednesday... Q&A With Andrew Savage of Lime Micromobility - October 21st in Burlington, VT

Love them or hate them, rental scooters and bikes have changed how people get around the world's cities.

While helping build Lime from the ground up, Andrew Savage has heard it all. As the leader of its government relations and sustainability work, he spent years sitting across the table from city representatives and skeptics. That work earned him a spot on the TIME100 Climate list.

Join Andrew on Wednesday, October 21st, for a candid Q&A about starting and scaling a business for impact. He will be discussing the risks, the setbacks, and the pushback that shaped Lime along the way. He'll also share his own path from Burlington to the Bay Area and back.

Whatever you think of scooters, this will be a great opportunity to learn from someone who's built a company from an idea into a global operation, and who's willing to talk honestly about what that actually took.

Zero Gravity will provide refreshments to help ensure loose tongues and honest answers!

Make sure you come with your questions!

City Market

Can we talk about the gross disparity between the south end and downtown…. how are they even the same company? The hot bar downtown is trash—always empty, always at least a 20 minute wait for them to replace something. They obviously don’t care… operation half ass… while the south end you can tell they actually give a shit. They go out of their way to be creative and take good care with their food. I understand it’s first world problems but it sucks for those of us who work downtown…

Hen of the Woods

What’s been going on with Hen of the Woods!? Quality of the food and wait staff of both the Burlington and Waterbury locations seem to have gone downhills :(

Anyone have any insights? New ownership? Did the chef leave? The rent’s too damn high?
