Local News How can BC Conservatives simply not respond to local media request for questionnaire and expect to rep the community?

As reported by Freshet News, they sent candidate profiles to all parties for publishing. See which party consistently did not even reply...

The Conservatives aren't running on ideas, they are running on dissatisfaction with the NDP and outrage. For many of their candidates, the more they talk, the more unappealing they become to the mainstream. The same thing happened at the federal level. The moment the outrage died down, their support dropped.

Many voters - me included - think that if the ndp stopped their continual own goals they would be ok. To name two: giving away land in secret, closing public parks to non FN groups at increasing pace. If they stopped doing these things, as the cons will, they would be more popular.

Sounds like you are in the weeds regarding the FN stuff. Sure I have some concerns there too, not the stuff you mentioned which simply aren't even accurate, but substantive issues like with DRIPA which Eby himself acknowledges is an issue.

However, I am much more concerned about stuff that actually affects ME like rolling back housing measures, funding for health care and education as well as public insitutions and infrastructure, ICBC!. For a party that claims to be fiscally responsible, they have absolutely no plan beyond hopes and dreams. Worse than the Greens in their financials.

The ndp signed it, now they recognize it’s a major issue.

Icbc works great if you pay the premium and never have to make a claim. Everyone loves it until there is an accident and icbc pays you nothing for any injuries and you’re not allowed to sue the driver who caused you harm

Right to sue is brought back and your rates go up - you'll complain about that too. On the ICBC issue, no one has presented a viable solution. It's all or nothing and we suffer either way.

I had a family member get rear ended by someone texting and get a broken leg. No damages other than a fight for the value of the car, no payment for time off work or suffering. As much as I love paying less for insurance, that is not right.

Hmm that is serious. There seems to be documented language on wage replacement. Why djd ICBC deny this to your family member? Their is also a tribunal process to appeal I believe

Could you provide your sources for these claims?

Is your head in the sand?

Major public park closed for 31 days unless you’re First Nations. Park developed and maintained by our tax dollars.

Thanks for sourcing. I was not aware of the global news article. I was aware of Joffrey Lakes and we probably just see that differently.  I am planning to analyze the land deal attempt further. If anyone viewing this has further analysis I would be interested.

I am not sure if you also see it as an insult to say "is your head in the sand?" But this is not something I would say to others. If you agree it can be an insult,  i would note that I dont believe I have insulted you in our interaction and I'm not sure why you felt like you had to insult me

These are major election issues and very public, imo part of being an informed voter as is our duty

There is very little public confirmed analysis on the land give away as everyone signed a non disclosure (why?)

3

u/precookedpastawater 1d ago

You believe that and yet that’s your attitude to informing another voter? Can that not be expanded to include open conversation with fellow voters is good for discourse and part of your civic duty too?

Before asking for a source on claims (which are not matters of opinion but facts, and well publicized election issues) voters should educate themselves on issues, and then be prepared to discuss and dialogue

2

u/porp_crawl 1d ago

Discussion and dialogue was engaged with you.

You restated your positions. Great.

Your positions are misinformed so conclusions may not be congruous with reality. GIGO.

Which of the two positions are misinformed?

Public parks are closed to all but one ethnicity, and for an increasing amount of time

Land giveaway has happened in secret when public is not informed and under nda.

So I read into the "secret land deal" issue more, it seems like the claim from ndp is that it is not about transferring land that isn't already discussed through treaty, but to try to optimize costs within the actual transfer process. It sounds like these were preliminary meetings without anything established yet, and other redditors claim it is not unusual for such an early process to he under nda.

By the way not sure if you are aware but BC treaty processes are very public and explained here: https://bctreaty.ca/

For me, unless this meeting was trying to circumvent the existing treaty processes, I don't feel that concerned, but I am open to people bringing forward a technical analysis of why it is egregious for this stage of negotiation to be under ndas. I didn't find that the northern beat nor the global news articles made a clear, evidenced explanation of the threat to the public here

Cons know they can only hurt their own chances and lose voters by opening their mouths.

1

u/perverseintellect 7h ago

Same thing for many of the cons running in the States. Many of them refuse to debate. It's a conservative epidemic.

It's sickening. If their policy ideas are so good, why won't they share them? They are the only party without a fully costed platform out for the public to look at it. How many of you can ignore a key deadline at your workplace like that?? It's insanity.

They are counting on enough "vote blue no matter who" types showing up. Such a disgusting slap in the face to the public.

And theyre not even hard questions! They just have nothing to offer!

u/NudeBeachEnthusiast 1d ago

Tell your friends, family and neighbours. There's still time! If they get a majority, we're fucked beyond belief.

Nice fear mongering.

As I walk around my neighborhood with small tent cities in what was once safe trails I wonder, how can it get worse. And maybe it should to appreciate what we had

16

u/Impossible-Fan3014 1d ago

This is disappointing. Zero effort and they expect to be given your vote. At least make an attempt to show you can represent voters.

6

u/ssnistfajen 1d ago

They do this because they can get away with it. The disappointing reality is a large chunk of the voter base will vote for them no matter what. Failure of so-called democratic society and civic education.

u/VancouverWriter1984 1d ago

They know there's dissatisfaction with the NDP out there. They also know the more they speak the more people realize they may be unhappy with the NDP but the alternative is way worse. Their best tactic is to shut up, get elected, and THEN unleash the crazy and stupid on us. *Shudder*

Conservatives everywhere are terrible I don't know why anyone expects anything of them other than misery

6

u/Successful-Ferret-12 1d ago

An insult. The conservatives are an absolute mess right now.

Freshet's questionnaire is about the local candidate, but the party positions are still on the record even when a candidate won't answer. I put together a quiz that compares the 5 main parties on 13 provincial issues, and every score links to where it came from (platform, news story, party statement).

The code and the sources are on GitHub if you want to check how any party got scored: https://github.com/vinistoisr/bc-vote-helper

The quiz itself: https://votebc.vinceroyer.ca

u/kaze987 Capitol Hill 1d ago

Its a self pitch questionnaire for goodness sake! Nothing to offer. Nothing to say.

They did this even worse last election and almost got elected

u/kyflexred2 1d ago

Conservatives at all levels of government don't want any gotcha moments so they often don't show up to debates

Reminds me of the Federal all candidates meetings in the last couple elections. Most of the time the Conservatives were no shows. Why would I give my vote to, and basically hire people who don’t make the effort?

1

u/porp_crawl 1d ago

Counting on a combination of kneejerk responses:

People upset with the NDP and voting literally anyone else.

People who are into the "culture war" and will vote "conservative" on the single issue of "culture war." Doesn't matter if they're a criminal or a pedophile or simply unfit for the role - if this hypothetical voter even cared enough to investigate - it's a FU vote against people/culture that this hypothetical voter feels threatened by.

I think that it's be interesting/funny to ask all political candidates on their position if their child came out as transgender.

And whether it would make a difference if they were MtF or FtM - or anyplace else across the spectrums.

It's not even like the NDP has done anything much for the the LGTBQ+ community.

I'm still voting despite being in a "safe" district because voting matters, final counts matter, and out of general principle.

It's like that in the states as well, the conservative movement is in shambles worldwide.
