Best ROC PASS idea I've seen
Saw this idea on Cougarboard and liked it:
Students are guaranteed 3 or 4 games (based on supply/demand) per season.
Everyone who buy a pass gets the same number (whether it's 3 or 4) of guaranteed games.
Students learn which 3 or 4 games they are guaranteed at the start of the season.
Students with more seniority get better seating group assignments for the games they are selected for.
Also set aside a fixed number of ROC tickets for every game that, before each game, are awarded via a last-chance lottery that:
- requires student opt-in each game AND
- increases lottery odds for: other sport/campus engagement, seniority, returning unused guaranteed tickets
- decreases lottery odds for: no-showing for a guaranteed game
Providing students...
> the same number of guaranteed tickets,
> game assignments in advance, and
> a lottery to win/earn additional game attendance based on involvement
would be a massive improvement for all students while still leaving the Athletic Department the flexibility to seasonally determine the ideal number of guaranteed games and lottery tickets.

I think this just kinda rearranges the parts of the current system but overall doesn’t make a better experience.
The core issue is obviously supply and demand. Creating lotteries and opaque modifiers just gives ticketing/Athletics/whoever an excuse for “well everyone had an equal shot.” Even though students shouldn’t have to jump through hoops if they so much as want two football games tickets for themself and a date they found on Thursday that week.
In my opinion, the best option is to remove football games from the Roc pass and instead sell individual student tickets to the Roc section. This was some napkin math I did on this a while ago:
• Rows 1-10 w/ seat selection: $50
• Rows 1-10 w/o selection: $30
(specific seat assigned before gameday)
• Rows 11+ GA seating: $15
If you wanna buy tickets to the front rows for every game, your max price is $50*6=$300 (still an insane value to any comparable season ticket or individual tickets)
If you just want to just get in the door for every football game, your max is $90.
The Roc pass with football and basketball is $250. Subtract the cost of the Olympic-only pass, $75. So they are valuing football and basketball access at $175. Split that in 2 and you get $87.5, or roughly $90 for GA access to every football game.
——
This removes every Roc pass holder from feeling entitled to every football game and feeling cheated out of a ticket when supply cannot accommodate the demand.
Monday: 50% of tickets go on sale
Wednesday : 30% more go on sale
Thursday: 10% more
Friday: Last 10% of tickets go on sale
Each day can have a different release time (but clearly published) so complaints for “how do I get tickets if I’m in class during the drop” are suppressed).
——
There’s probably a couple flaws with this but whatever, it’s just an idea and it’s not like I have any real influence anyways🤷🏼♂️

I mean like 10 years ago it was just a "first come first served" method that seemed to work well. Want to get into a game? Show up early. Would cut off after 'X' many passes were scanned.
That seemed to work really well, not sure why they felt like they had to change it.
