What was your all time favourite car?

Just a question I was asked and it got me thinking.

I have had 3 cars.
1998 Corolla, 2009 Corolla and an EV6.

My all time favourite was my 1998 Corolla.
It was a tin box and a terrible marroon colour but I loved that car.
I think it my first one and I didn't have to be protective over it or care too much over interior or scratches the ultimate college car.

So if you had to think about the cars you owned what would be your favourite and why?

Hi, anyone have a good experience with a garage for getting a corrosion repair done? Failed NCT on it. Rang a couple places that say they only do body work.

Looking for somewhere in Dublin, if they’re open on Saturdays it would be a plus.

Very close to buying this car where so far the only thing giving me pause is this rust at the rear and wanted some feedback.

Im leaning toward treatable surface rust but whats your take?

For context, its a dealer selling and the fact they let me look underneath it without hesitation was a bit of a green flag.

Comes with full service history, stamped every year, the lad done a battery readout there and then (76%) and the bodywork around it is grand.

From the top down in the engine bay, everything looked clean, underneath and around the driveshaft etc, all looked grand.

It was just that rear rust on the chassis body thats giving me a bit of pause and I know I should have poked it a bit but tbf, they were also standing there.

What are we saying? Surface rust, scrape it down and lanoguard?

Based on recent feedback we've implemented some guard rails on the type of accounts who can post on this sub

These filters are based around account types, account behaviour leading up to them posting here, karma count, previous reports and some other useful checks.

Since implementing on Saturday night there have been 25 posts correctly removed before they hit the new queue.

Some additional posts were held and manually approved. These posts were held because of some account activity that triggered the automation rule. In order to keep this sub free of the recent influx in spam, the odd few posts may be incorrectly flagged and held for approval.

If this happens to you then message us. There's no malice behind it.

Just wanted to post this for transparency and to say we've been listening to your feedback. Let's see how it goes for a week or so and it can be tweaked then if needed.

Thank you for reporting posts too. It really helps.

Mechanic recs Dublin

• Upvotes

Hi all, I’ve an old seat Ibiza (petrol engine) with a couple issues. One of them being I believe my brakes master cylinder is failing. The other issue is that my last mechanic replaced the camshaft sensor and since he’s done that it idles perfectly and doesn’t go into limp mode under stress which is what was happening that I got it done in the first place but now when I try to start the car it won’t start first time. Like the battery is low but it’s not. When I try to start it the second time it starts perfectly without fail.
The mechanic who did the job on the camshaft sensor has ghosted me?? I’ve rang him every day for 2 weeks straight and he is not answering even with me owing him money.
Sooo basically I need a new mechanic and one that won’t rip me when they see a woman coming who’s car illiterate. Any recs?

GTI Clubsport

Considering a nearly new clubsport as my next car. In two minds. I just find that it's a bit showy for my liking especially with that spoiler. I appreciate that some people love them but I prefer the slightly more subtle styling of the regular GTI. I don't know if I could ever relax driving it around. They are more numerous on the forecourts though than regular GTIs so more options and I've been offered a good price for one. Does anyone else get that feeling with "nicer" cars?

Are winter tyres a thing here?

Thumbnail

First time in my life paying attention to what tyres im getting - size 185/65 r14.

When looking on tyreleader.ie I see the option for summer/winter/all seasons. Im looking to get a high quality tyre with good wet grip but most of the winter or all season tyres have a unique type of tyre grooves if that makes sense compared to the traditional tyre.

I dont know is it a bit extreme to use it here.

Any advice please. Budget around 100 per tyre i suppose

Blow motor is gone, aside from fog is there a risk of an electrical fire?

To be more specific, my blow motor is damaged and needs to be repaired but I won't have the funds to pay for repairs until next month or January, I will only get a bit of heat on "max" setting while driving at 70 or 80 mph, anything lower than that gets no heat but will clear up my windows only slightly, aside from my windows fogging up, are there any other dangers of driving like this?

Hi everyone, I am thinking of pulling a trigger on 180k km 2.0 diesel audi a3 2017. What should I look for at this mileage? Anybody with experience who bought approximately same mileage car what you had to do?

Update: And is 14k good price for the s-line model?

Advice on new car?

Any advice for me lads?

Looking to buy a new car. Have had my previous car for almost 13 years. This will be my second car so not much experience with buying.

Love a diesel for economic reasons but most of my driving is going to be city / low mileage most days so petrol unfortunately,it has to be right?

Currently shocked at the prices around. Looking for something no older than 4 years old so 2022/23 ideally and have a budget of around 30k max

Will a dealership be open to negotiating. Seen a few cars i would consider but there 3/4k over budget. Have kids these days so don't want anything too small. SUV maybe.

Any advice on where to look. Where to avoid? Negotiation tactics etc

2004 Mini Cooper, €1,600 spent on repairs, fresh NCT, but overheating. Is scraping it the only option?

My Dad has a 2004 Mini Cooper (1.6 petrol, 167k miles) that he's spent over €1,600 on in the last six months. Have the receipts for all work this year.

It's had a new clutch, ball joints, wheel bearing, brake caliper, steering and suspension work, cooling hoses and most recently a new water pump.

It passed its NCT, but the bugger is still overheating. He's had enough of it now and has bought himself another car. He loved that mini tho.

Ive contacted a few breakers in the area (midlands) but none want it. Just looking for advice here if anyone knows of anywhere i could try to get him a few quid for it above scrap price, or is it off to scrap yard? Shame after the money spent and it passed its nct, valid until Feb.

About a year and a half into this project now, so thought I’d share a few progress photos.

Bodywork is substantially done and it’s finally starting to look like a car again. Next up is the engine build and electrics, so still plenty to keep us busy.

Hopefully have it out on Irish roads next summer, all going well. Looking forward to actually driving it instead of just looking at photos of it 😂

What should I be asking dealership?

Looking at a 2018 with 28,000km on it. I’m F and not very car literate - what are some questions I should be asking before spending 10k? I am really interested in this car and will happily purchase it.

Importing to NI

I’m moving from Wicklow to Antrim and I’m considering taking my motor with me.

I’ve looked into a bit online and there is a Transfer of Residence that allows personal belongings and cars etc to be brought with me with VAT exemptions.

Has anyone any experience of this as it’s usually the other way around.

I’ve had me jammer from new, 2020 and I’d like to hold on to it.

Restoring 1970s Opel Manta

As someone who has little experience with cars other than keeping them on the road. I can do the small jobs myself etc. what effort, time and physical, financial, would go into restoring a 1970s Opel Manta. It’s been kept locked up in a garage for over 30 years now and likely needs an engine or work done to the engine.

Am I mad for taking this on?

TOR from NI as a student

Hi folks, Question about TOR as a student,
I know on the revenue website it clearly states that they don’t count being a student in NI counts as genuine residency, but if I have a 12 month rental agreement in my name plus bills etc, part time job in NI, daily expenditures with a NI bank account documented, surely that counts for genuine residency aside from the fact i’m also attending university? Has anyone been in the same situation that has claimed TOR successfully?
