Computers This sub inspired the look of my cyberdeck, HACK-E
I've spent a lot of time browsing this sub, and it was probably my biggest source of inspiration for the design of this little computer. I love this aesthetic, so now that the build is finished, I wanted to share it here. It's called HACK-E, a name that comes from my dog, Aki.
The original PlayStation and first grey Game Boy were the main hardware references. I grew up with both, and the thing I kept coming back to was those big grooves in the plastic casing. They show up on so much hardware from the 80s and 90s. To me, that detail does a lot of the work in making something feel like an old machine, so I wanted the grooves to be a real part of the case's design.
I kept the main shell grey, with a black screen frame and a few orange details to give it a slightly more modern feel. The case folds open to reveal a long Corsair XENEON EDGE screen and a keyboard underneath. There's a Beelink mini PC and a battery inside, so it works as a portable computer too.
I went through 24 design revisions and at least ten printed shell versions. One thing I hadn't anticipated was the weight of the screen making the whole deck want to tip backwards when I opened it. That's fixed now, but finding the balance while keeping the shape I wanted was an interesting part of the build.
I'm really happy to see it finished. After spending so much time looking at the designs posted here, I hope I've managed to capture a little of what I love about them.
