I woke up this morning after 3 and half hours of sleep (which is a lot for me) feeling like I have the flu, without having the flu. Everything aches. But like hell that would stop me from drawing my precious little critters.
It also rained for the first time in almost 3 months. Which is great, but holy shit 65% humidity is HELL right now.
Also, I can safely say that one of you managed to get an absolutely perfect read on Orion a few pages back. So, first of all, get out of my head. And second of all, well done!
I won't say who. So, that much will be up to you to figure out :)
does orion worrying about teddy and stringbean needing to rest technically make him some sort of tsundere or just more worried because it could affect biscuit?
I think Orion just understands the idea of "if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together". Though they absolutely are making sacrifices for Biscuit.
I mean, as I've said before. Its not that Orion is heartless, but Orion wants to be in control. They want to be the one calling the shots, the one making things happen. Now that Teddy has settled down and isn't challenging Orion, they seem content to chill and help out instead of being all bristly.
I genuinely do not think Orion is malicious, they just couldn't accept the fact that Teddy challenged their authority and them being in charge, so understandably the moment Teddy was more concerned with something other then standing up to them Orion chilled out.
And congrats on getting NaN% more sleep than usual blue!

It is also quite specific, unlike most other posts about Orion that I saw, so it's more likely it was exactly and specifically what Blue had in mind.
Also- I realise I ought to mention; I see and read EVERY comment I get. I don't always reply, because often times I think it best not to weigh in and let people discuss! It's such a joy to see people debating things, analysing details, and coming up with theories. Even more of a joy when people get things absolutely spot on!
Well if you’re reading all the comments I had a quick question for you. Would you be ok with people writing fanfic about your comic? I ask because I have two drafts kicking around with Teddy and Stringbean was wondering if you’d object considering some of the… comments I’ve made about Teddy in the past lol. Nether of them are explicit all though he does have some romance between the two but at a PG-13 level lol. If you’re not comfortable with that just let me know and I’ll trash both of my drafts
You know. That's honestly a tricky question to answer. On the one hand, I hate making anyone feel they have to trash what they've made. But, you've always been very polite and respectful about my particular wishes involving my characters. So honestly? Go for it! I will warn you as a heads up, that there is a rather significant age gap between Teddy and Stringbean which you might want to remedy first.
Please don’t just say yes on my account lol. They are your characters after all. As for the age gap… I kinda don’t know what to do about that tbh. I honestly had no clue and kinda feel weird for shipping them now. Can I ask how old Teddy and Stringbean are respectively?
Teddy's around their mid to late twenties, Stringbean on the other hand is mid to late teens. So, anywhere from 8 to 10 years difference.
Orion is in their early twenties, and Biscuit is in their early teens. (I know technically as far as lore goes, they would all be considered 'mature', don't know if that genuinely means 'adult' or not. But yeah.)

At first I thought it was Orion's imagination doing the classic of putting words that weren't said on Teddy's mouth, but now, considering all the game lore I can imagine Orion's own pool of trauma back in the labs...
It explains, at least in my head, why Orion took such offence on being called a runt, even if Teddy said that with no ill intent.
It's a good candidate and I couldn't bring myself to forget this, but I don't think that's the one lol
I've always been there, since the start. With time, and with more understanding of what Orion went through, more people will see the light hopefully :)
My friend, Orion is just doing his be with his judgement, and considering, a Milkies judgement is the one thing that keeps them alive. I really hope Orion does learn the truth of what happened to the others, cause people will see a change. Maybe not immediate, but Milkies are more understanding when things get explained.
I thought he would be somewhat friendly to teddy an he has a valid reason for not liking teddy being called a runt really set Orion off it's clear that he has trauma of his own that we don't know about
Based on the fact that they experienced increased distress while being unable to figure out a solution to free teddy and also thinking about how other milkies would be able to figure it out a lot quicker, Orion most likely feels inferior and is trying to preform arrogance to compensate

I loved this boi since the beginning. After the inner thoughts when they saw Teddy, the character definitely became much more intriguing and interesting for me. I REALLY want to learn their backstory and what caused this behaviour.
(My guess rn is another group of sawians abandoned them cause they were a "weak" point in the group, since trauma messages kinda point to that, rather than humans. And we know that they encountered other sawians in caves. Maybe I'm reading too much into the "Leave the runt BEHIND" and similar stuff about "leaving". Scientists will send them to rot, rather than leave them somewhere to do so)
Of course not, Orion is useful. Look they'll prove it, they're carrying all those things and they're keeping watch and don't forget they made that prosthetic when they were injured instead of just wasting time. Super super super useful and competent and not a burden or a runt or an oaf or anything like that and you shouldn't abandon them.

I know there are those who have preemptively given up on them entirely due to them being mean to fan favorite Teddy (and believe me, I do love Teddy, myself), but I, for one, am really excited to learn more about Orion and see them grow. I'm a big fan of redemption arcs and characters with harsh outer facades that get broken down to reveal the sweet core within—hell, Teddy having elements of that is part of their appeal for me!—so I will be watching their development with great interest...

i think the big thing to remember is that you can hate a character as a person but find them interesting for that reason alone
Orion is interesting as a story character, but ultimately (currently) a shitty person who is effectively echoing the same mean strategies those who abandoned him did. That's objectively wrong of him to do, even if it's understandable WHY he does it. Something can be understandable, but not justified.
I mean, yeah, you’re correct. I’m not saying Orion is justified in what they’re doing; I am very much talking about liking them as a character and liking other characters who have similar growth trajectories.
I think Orion is being genuine. Now that the pressure is off, Orion's cracks are receding. It's also interesting that the colors of the sacks that Orion is carrying match his three companions.
With some alone time on his hands during the first watch, maybe Orion can reflect on his behavior? If he does, maybe he'll recognize that the words of his abusers came pouring out.

He was already struggling to carry it, I don't think he'd be able to manage all of it if he tried to flee with it, and with Biscuit still awake, he'd call him out for such pretty quickly
I feel like Orion's going to try too hard to be useful to the group, get bit by a shade crawler while standing guard and refuse to show it/ask for aid as the venom spreads.
They are so stubborn in doing all they can to not be perceived as a burden, especially to Biscuit.
Also Teddy and Stringbean need a NAP. 24h sleep, stat. They are exhausted and Teddy's starving on top of it, these two need some time to recuperate oh my goodness.
Now I gotta ponder a few things with this exchange. It's probably nothing, just two close friends sharing a small moment with the plushie. I just felt there's something there.

Is there a possibility that there’s something between Biscuit and Orion? I’ve had suspicions before now but the way Orion looks at him certainly exudes fondness
So, Orion does something common in mental illness and toxic masculinity circles called "masking."
Masking is usually used to hide one's true emotions by an act or facade, in Orion's case his 'air of intelligence and superiority' is his mask.
Masking for extended periods usually results in bottled emotions that don't get addressed, as they don't fit the persona. Emotional pressure tends to build until the bottle shatters in a violent explosion, usually in the form of a mental break.
The black cracks is Orion's mask cracking, revealing all the bottled emotions underneath, and I am very eagerly waiting for when that mask completely shatters :)
but yeah thats the answer ive seen to orions cracking that makes the most sense so far seeing as one of his one off dialogues earlier mentioned something about his peers being able to think better or faster than him

Now that I think about it, the comic has been notably absent any of the cave's fauna up until now. My headcanon is that Orion is going to get attacked by a shade crawler while on watch, and Teddy will come in clutch with that makeshift hammer to save them, hopefully helping to break some of the tension between themselves.
I noticed the same thing. If the author is gonna make Orion stop being cruel to Teddy I think Teddy fighting a dune and saving him might be a good way to do it and to also prove to Orion that Teddy isn’t useless. Also I wanna see Teddy give a sweet two piece to a dune lmao
That is usually how troops operate while sleeping in unknown territory. The least tired soldier keeps first watch, then wakes the second least tired soldier once it becomes too hard for the first one to stay awake, and so on and so forth.
Going off of that one comment in a previous post, it seems Orion also suffers from some sort of anxiety when it comes to proving himself. I can't help but notice that his depression tumors start growing specifically when he begins proposing his idea, as if bracing himself for them to reject it outright.
The cracks start fading once he realizes they're letting him talk instead of cutting him off.

Dang, that fifth panel really made me realize how small Orion is compared to the rest of them. I've only recently caught up with the story and Orion is definitely my favorite of the bunch.
I see those cracks forming before Orion offers to keep watch (because he's physically straining carrying mostly empty bags?) plus that "BURDENS" wording behind his actual words.
He for sure offered for them to sleep noticing that one of the more "useful" people in the group (Stringbean) is on the verge of collapsing. Everything he's done so far comes from cold and calculated actions, any form of altruism being a bonus (save for Biscuit's prosthetic)
I want to believe, as a Milky OC haver (and glazer), the boi ain't going to just dump 'em while they sleep, especially seeing him struggle with the loot.
Out of curiosity, and this question isn't directly applicable to this panel, but do the others see when someone goes dark? Like how Teddy was a few panels ago?
People hate Orion so much. Those people are quick to anger and don't know how to handle a harsh leader, lol. I really like how well Orion's personality shows so far.
ignoring that he's self admittedly super opportunistic and has a very bad habit of reflecting his own trauma onto others (AKA: making it other people's problem) yeah sure he's just a "harsh leader"
He is also quick to act and find a solution to a problem, trusting the group to do as he says and the group trusts that his plans are for their benefit. Ya gotta remember that the entire game is essentially a bunch of high-functioning trauma victims in a doomed survival scenario.
And that's fair but that doesn't justify Orion's treatment of Teddy cause he inadvertently reminds him of someone/an unrelated party, that's still unfair projection is my point
Yeah telling someone you’d leave them to rot to their face while already in the midst of a panic attack in a situation where you actually need them to be calm suggest some level of sadistic intent rather than pragmatism
I strongly disliked them at first, but I've actually come around on Orion thanks to the comments of the last few panels, and I'm interested on where the character goes. (The reason for my initial reaction was probably my personal lived experience with being bullied, and also watching my siblings be bullied.)
That being said, tough leadership requires gaining support by being an effective communicator. While Orion has attempted to be rational, the casual contempt with which they've spoken to Teddy isn't effective. It's personal and petty, and risks splitting the group. If Orion wants the role of leader, they've got a whole lot yet to learn. I just hope it won't be learned the painful way.
Glad to hear that you got some sleep man. The reason you feels so sick/tired now is probably due to a combination of you not sleeping at all, and then you sleeping for 3 hours which is probably the amount you need to sleep in order to wake up the most exhausted, since you wake up as soon as the body gets serious with it being asleep.
I know you have tried for a long time with getting sleep, but don't give up. Things can get better, you just have to find out what you need to do. After that, you just need to hold onto it.
Also, don't pull a scott cawthon on us. A few people being able to pick up on hints and piece together things early is good. Because then you haven't made things too obvious, so that it isn't predictable, and you have also made sure that what happens doesn't just come out of nowhere, since you have left hints of it.
In other words, it is a sign of good writing. Keep it up.
