I think i accidentally adopted the most affectionate cat
So, just over a week ago, I adopted a 6-year-old cat called Duchess, now renamed Boo. I was specifically looking for an older rescue cat rather than a kitten, and she seemed like a good fit.
The funny thing is, she was described as a bit of a diva, independent, and apparently aggressive. Naturally, I prepared myself for a long settling-in period, plenty of hiding, and having to earn her trust over weeks or months.
Boo apparently didn’t get that memo.
The first few days, she mostly hid under my bed or in her carrier, which I expected. I gave her space, let her approach me on her terms, and never forced her to interact with me.
Fast-forward to now, and I genuinely think I’ve accidentally adopted a tiny, furry Velcro creature.
She:
Climbs onto my bed completely of her own accord and settles right next to me.
Makes biscuits on me while purring so loudly you’d think she had an engine installed.
Leaves to get food, then comes straight back to me.
Follows me around the house and sometimes tries to lead me upstairs when she wants something.
Headbutts my hand repeatedly if I dare to stop petting her.
Rubs her face against me, licks me, and leans into every bit of fuss she can get.
Has now decided that my lap is an acceptable place to spend her time.
Today, she spent around 10 minutes making biscuits on me while purring like an absolute machine before settling down. She doesn’t even need me to call her over anymore. I’ll just be lying there, and she’ll come and curl up beside me herself.
The best part is that she still has her little independent-cat moments, but apparently being independent means she can choose to be attached to me at any given moment.
I went into this expecting to slowly gain the trust of a potentially difficult cat. Instead, I’m barely two weeks in, and she’s already acting like she’s known me her entire life.
Obviously, she’s still settling in, and I know she’ll have her own boundaries and off days. But I’m genuinely baffled by the difference between the description I was given and the cat I’m actually living with.
I’m starting to wonder whether she was genuinely aggressive in her previous home, whether she was misunderstood, or whether she’s just decided that I’m her person.
Either way, I appear to have been adopted by Boo.
TL;DR: Adopted a cat described as aggressive and independent, prepared for months of earning her trust, and somehow ended up with a purring, biscuit-making, hand-bunting lap cat who follows me around and comes back for cuddles after eating. I think I’ve been conned, and honestly, I’m delighted
I’m really glad you have, it’s moreso shocking because she was described as aggressive. So for her to be like this was very confusing at the start and alot of tears haha
You should go contact the shelter where you got her and tell them how off their description was, and how quickly she became the most loving Velcro cat. I was told mine was silent, standoff- ish and didn’t like to play. And because she was 3 yrs old her personality was likely set. Omg she couldn’t have turned out more different. She doesn’t stop “talking” and will play wildly with toys for long periods. I gave them updates at the shelter - they were so pleasantly surprised.
I definitely want to give them an update! It’s honestly crazy how different she is. It just goes to show that sometimes they need the right environment and someone they feel safe with to show their true personalities. I’m so glad your girl turned out to be so different from what you were told, too. It must have been lovely seeing her personality blossom like that!
Mean and aggressive at the shelter so she knows the only people adopting her know what they’re in for. Flips the script and goes full snug bug because she was just looking for a retirement home.
I adopted a rough n tumble gray tabby labeled mean and aggressive who did the same…just wanted cuddles and scritches because he never felt love before
I have a special place in my heart for cats who look like that. Soon as I saw your pictures I thought our dear ol Bob was reincarnated. A sweet creature indeed.
That’s such a lovely thing to say. I’d like to think Bob sent her my way somehow. She’s been such a sweetheart, and it’s amazing how an animal can remind you of one you’ve loved and bring back those memories. If you want to share a picture of Bob, I’d love to see.
Little close up of boy a couple years back before he passed away. He was the “Cat of the Forest” or “Forest Cat”. I found him one day while working in the backyard. He was skinny and yowled loudly from a bush to get my attention. When I saw him I said “okay, let’s go.” He then meowed happily and followed me into the house. Great boy.
I say this In the only way I know how to, thank you so much. She has also rescued me. I adopted her as a sort of therapy cat and we both are healing. It’s amazing to see. She currently is asleep while stretching on me
This is Billie, we didn't adopt him he adopted us, he climbed my mother's leg and said "take me home hooman". He is super affectionate, and loves to drink water directly from the faucet.
