I transferred from the West coast to the East coast a few years ago. What is the ISET program?? Never heard of it when I was there

Initial Service Entry Training - 4 weeks of training for new crew members: 2 on land, and 2 on a vessel to mimic an onboard rotation. Focuses on injury prevention, safe operations, and generally getting new crew members up to speed on CCG protocols.

It was my understanding that ISET was a training program for essentially all new entry-level shipboard employees… Are you here to tell me that that they won’t require any more staff meeting that criteria for YEARS into the future?

Word on the street there's one this year, and 3 next year.

Biggest thing you need to get in the door is reliability status...

Sadly not everyone gets into iset.

Sad truth; lots of people get hired without iset. If someone has marine skills, it's not uncommon for them to get hired (usually)only deck. From there there's Lotsa ojt on the job training. Even cooks and stewards are supposed to do the course. To my knowledge, not one has...

Frequently crewing is tight on staffing. If they know you're eager/available, they'll call and ask if you can report for crew change...and that's how lots of journeys begin....

The iset course is expensive.

8 or 10 personnel. Plus one or two instructors. Plus food.

And they don't have a defined role (other than student).

The Guard, as much as I respect them, are hampered by budgets. They don't have a dedicated training budget per se. Kerrmitt could explain it better.

Yes they will run it again. It is slowly becoming an essential way to crew/staff. When it will happen, I'm just being honest about what I was told. But this was the last iset coming off back in March (?). The whole world is changing. Fast. I want to see more iset courses too. I know Mr Briggs is working towards it too.

Other than that...I dont know what to tell you.
