Delta(s) from OP - Switch-It-Up Saturday CMV: Preferring "barely legal" porn specifically, rather than porn with young adults, points to an interest in childlike traits
Let's get this out of the way first: I'm not saying that anyone attracted to a 19 year old is a creep. That's NOT my claim.
My claim is about the genre. "Barely legal" productions don't sell youth, they sell the red line. And the packaging of this product leans on school uniforms, braces, stuffed animals, "tiny," "innocent," etc etc. Those aren't markers of being 19, they're markers of being a kid. They're characteristics that signal "minor-ness."
So, I think someone who actively seeks this out, as opposed to stumbling onto it, is probably responding sexually to apparent immaturity, not just age. The age number isn't necessarily the issue, it's the qualities that correlate with younger ages.
I'm not saying these viewers are dangerous, that the performers are victims or that attraction equals behavior. I'm saying the preference itself tells you something.
What would change my mind: evidence that people who choose this genre don't differ from general porn viewers in their response to childlike cues, or that "barely legal" is just a search keyword and the viewers don't care about the framing.
•
u/Alesus2-0 80∆ 7h ago
I don't entirely disagree with your view. For many, I think you're probably right. But I do wonder if you're being overly literal, at least in the case of some people. Clearly, introducing imagry associated with children is emphasising that the performers are childlike. I suppose I wonder if that's the point, in itself, for all consumers that content.
To illustrate this, I'd like to use a more benign porn archetype: the sexy nun. Considering the actual prevalence of nuns in society, porn featuring "nuns" is surprisingly common. It's a well established cliché.
Of course, the women in this content aren't actually nuns. But great emphasis is placed on presenting them as nuns. Their nunishness is obviously an important part of the fantasy. Should we conclude from this that people consuming 'nun porn' are attracted to nuns or nun-like people as a category?
Personally, I think that the role of the nun is more symbolic. The nun represents innocence, purity, chastity, forbiddenness and, potentially, nostalgia. By extension, the promiscuity or seduction of the nun is transgressive. It involves conquest and sleaziness that a random woman having sex doesn't, hence the appeal to some people.
Perhaps, "barely legal" porn has a similar significance to some people.
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 6h ago
I accept your nun analogy and I also recognize that "barely legal" is symbolic. But it's the symbolism that i find troubling. Some of the most popular "barely legal" actresses are in their 20s. Age isn't the issue, at least in this cmv, it's the arousal towards the symbolic characteristics that "barely legal" actors exhibit.
•
u/Alesus2-0 80∆ 5h ago
It might be helpful if you outlined exactly which associations you think this porn is appealing to. You say that you agree that it's about symbolism, but seem to have drawn the opposite conclusion from that.
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 5h ago
Fair, i could've spelled it out. The genre trades on characteristics like innocence (first time, virgin or fresh), smallness (tiny), school-age settings like uniforms and stuffed animals and mostly on being "newly eligible," if you know what i mean. The age-line IS the product.
I'm not walking back the symbolism point. My claim is that the symbols point at minors, not young adults. Being drawn to a youthful 22-year-old is about looks and energy. Nobody puts braces and a teddy bear in a video to say "adult."
I'll concede that symbolic appeal is just fantasy and that fantasy doesn't map cleanly onto behavior. As i said in my OP, I'm not saying these viewers want actual kids. I'm saying the "barely legal" genre only works if it reads as minor-coded, so choosing it specifically means choosing that coding.
•
u/EmptyDrawer2023 1∆ 4h ago
My claim is that the symbols point at minors, not young adults.
The line between them can be fuzzy. Different places, different times = different 'age of majority'. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with it where it currently is, but you gotta admit it's just a number someone came up with. Why can you be tried as an adult at 13, drive at 16, but you're not an adult until 18... but can't have a beer until 21?? But (supposedly) your brain doesn't stop developing until you're... 25?
Who's to say this mish-mosh of random-seeming numbers is any better than, say, Ancient Rome, where boys commonly assumed the adult toga sometime between 14 and 17? OR some Hindu and Muslim legal traditions, where a person attained majority at the end of the 15th year—or earlier if puberty had occurred. Why are we right, and them wrong?
Ultimately, I think the 'drive' to look for young partners is due to one big reason: Control. A younger woman (or should I say 'girl') is easier to control, physically. If you know she's a virgin when you get her, and you keep her under your control, you can then guarantee that any babies are yours, and not some other guy's. (Which was important before DNA tests.) And you don't have to risk any comparisons between you and her previous man, because there isn't one. So you can 'train' her to be the way you want. And there's generally an appeal to being the first person to introduce something to someone. ('You're one of today's lucky 10,000' - https://xkcd.com/1053/ )
Also, note the idea of a "Fountain of Youth". "Youth" is desirable, especially as one grows older. Who doesn't want to go back to having more energy, muscles and joints that don't ache, smooth skin, etc?
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 4h ago
The fuzziness itself is the problem. I'll edit and respond more later, after I've had time to digest this.
•
u/EmptyDrawer2023 1∆ 4h ago
The fuzziness itself is the problem.
Unfortunately, there is no hard-and-fast Universal rule about when a 'child' becomes an 'adult'. The closest might be the idea that one becomes an adult when one is old enough to have children of your own. ie: 'Puppies' cannot breed. 'Dogs' can. A 'puppy' becomes a 'dog' when it is old enough to breed. The only issue with this is that, in humans, that age is way too young for Society to accept: For girls, puberty usually starts between ages 8 and 13, with the average onset around 10½ years. For boys, puberty generally begins between ages 9 and 14, averaging 11½–12 years. This is even younger than the Roman/Hindu/Muslim examples I gave of '15'.
I find it interesting that, unlike animals, who go from 'child' to 'adult', Humans add in an additional stage- Adolescence. A kind of 'Adult-lite'. Sort of 'yeah, you're technically physically an adult, but not mentally or socially an adult yet'.
Another reason for the 'fuzziness' is that people are unique. It's not like every single person in the world leaves behind childhood and magically starts acting like an adult at midnight on their 18th (15th? Or whatever.) birthday. Some teens act like adults. Some 20- or 30-year olds still act like children.
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 24m ago
I agree with everything you said, but i don't see how this rebuts my view that people who specifically and purposefully search out and consume "barely legal" porn are aroused by the child-like qualities exhibited by the actor.
The fact that different time periods and different cultures or societies have arbitrary definitions of what constitutes adulthood doesn't really matter to me. Not all cultural practices are equal or respectable. I see cultures that are inherently misogynistic as inferior, for example. Those cultures should change or become extinct and human society will be better when they do.
•
u/EmptyDrawer2023 1∆ 11m ago
i don't see how this rebuts my view that people who specifically and purposefully search out and consume "barely legal" porn are aroused by the child-like qualities exhibited by the actor.
I'm just explaining why that might be. You seem to be saying it's 'icky', and I'm showing that, to other people in other times and circumstances, it might not be.
Not all cultural practices are equal or respectable.
True. But no natural law says our cultural practices are the best or most respectable. We think they are- that's why we have them. But other cultures thinks theirs are best- which is why they have them. Who's to say 1000 years from now, they won't think we're just as inferior as you think others are now?
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 6m ago
I'm not concerned about other times and circumstances or about in the distant future. I don't care what other cultures think. I'm concerned with the here and now.
•
u/Global-Service-8579 5h ago
>[the issue is] the arousal towards the symbolic characteristics that "barely legal" actors exhibit.
Why is that an issue to you?
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 5h ago edited 5h ago
Moral disgust and my inmate protective instinct towards biologically immature adults.
•
u/Global-Service-8579 4h ago
You have a moral disgust against it, but don't want it banned/the people to be punished?
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 4h ago
No, because it's not illegal. I don't believe banning it would do anything to stop it. Furthermore, it's two consenting adults (or, in the most popular videos, considerably more).
•
u/Global-Service-8579 4h ago
>No, because it's not illegal.
So you wouldn't want murder to be banned or murderers to be punished as long as murder were already legal?
•
•
u/Adam-West 2∆ 7h ago
That might be half of it but the other half is one that is common among all porn. And that’s simply that anything remotely taboo is a kink. Often vanilla porn is marketed in a way to make it sound more taboo in order to garner appeal. I think the same goes for this.
•
u/Liquid_Friction 2∆ 7h ago
Yeh I think that's a good point to make, it we made black dresses or thongs banned, sure enough it would end up with its own category eventually.
I think further to your point of the neuance of this, is the landscape, the landscape of dating is hell on earth
OP wants to push ' is probably responding sexually to apparent immaturity' but most guys arnt even taken seriously until they get a good job, career, car, own place, until their early thirties or women demand expensive lifestyles they can't afford
So ofcourse we would see a higher uptick in maybe borderline school age women because the fantasy is they don't demand or have insane expectations for dating like we see on online dating culture.
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 7h ago
I don't understand what you mean in your third paragraph. What do you mean by "most guys aren't taken seriously..." and what does that have to with my OP.
Your supposition is that we would of course see arousal towards child-like characteristics because some men have trouble dating in their own age?
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 7h ago
I don't dispute that but that also isn't necessarily the issue. Yes, it's taboo, a kink. It's a kink for certain people to be attracted to child-like characteristics, regardless of the actor's age.
•
u/Adam-West 2∆ 7h ago edited 6h ago
Barely legal doesn’t mean they look like kids though. Barely legal just means 18-19ish. It’s taboo to be with somebody that age if you’re anything over 25. It doesn’t mean that you’re watching it looking for similarities with younger teenagers. It might do for some people im sure. But there’s a big difference between somebody that looks 18 vs somebody that looks 15. Also I’ve not touched on it but if you’re 18 yourself and you’re watching it you aren’t doing so because you want the youngest possible option. You’re doing it because they’re your own age.
One last thought, is that on the other end of the spectrum, porn sites are full of granny porn, despite the actresses looking nothing like old granny’s. The average age being about 40-50. So does watching that mean that you are attracted to 80 year olds?
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 6h ago
I never claimed they look like little kids (although after a cursory search of 'barely legal' on three major porn sites, filtered by most viewed, and I've come to the conclusion that, yes, many of them do look like children). I said they exhibit characteristics that signal minor-ness and that's what's arousing to the consumers of such content. The age of the viewer doesn't matter, they're aroused by child-like qualities.
On the granny porn, it simply means they're attracted to the characteristics that grannies have. Actual age isn't the issue, at least in this cmv. I don't see how this is a rebuttal.
•
u/Adam-West 2∆ 6h ago
I don’t think it’s primarily that. I think it’s more like they’re attempting to just get extra engagement with a marginal gain by adding in a known taboo. I work in advertising and the same thing happens with social media. You just enhance a post with a little bit of controversy to drive engagement. Bonnie blue says the same thing about her ‘barely legal men’ in order to make headlines. I don’t think her fans are into teenage boys.
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 5h ago
You tacitly acknowledge that "barely legal" used as a marketing tool is controversial. I agree with you, but in this case, why is it controversial? I do not blame the productions for trying to make money.
I also specifically said in my OP that consumers of this content are not necessarily into minors.
•
u/WolfKnifeLaserTorch 7h ago
Not entirely disagreeing but I think some traits of "barely legal" productions, such as innocence, shyness, uncertainty, etc. come off as more realistic or easier to connect to for some viewers, regardless of age, rather than the hypersexual, ravenous, ultra-experienced attitudes seen in most other productions.
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 6h ago
Possibly. I'd almost buy this is if it weren't for the prevalence of "barely legal" porn where the female actors act extremely hypersexual.
•
u/jaminfine 12∆ 7h ago
I think we can view this "genre" the same way we view the "step brother" trend in porn. First of all, barely legal isn't really a genre since it really just describes the age of at least one of the actresses involved, and sometimes they are even lying about that. She might be 35 and just look kinda young for her age. Often videos say barely legal when there are no stuffed animals, braces, uniforms, etc. similarly, sometimes people put "step brother" in titles of videos that weren't filmed to have that asoect at all. These things have become trendy labels even when the actual video is entirely unrelated.
However, there is a reason these labels are being used that I think is important to understand. For the vast majority of porn viewers, seeing these labels doesn't bother them. They may see it as goofy or strange but it won't stop them from clicking on a video. It's agreeable enough, and it's weirdly a "safe pick" if you are looking for vanilla heterosexual porn since these videos are often trying to have broad appeal without being too kinky or off-putting. Yet, there are a small subset of viewers for each label that are into the theme. They want to see the actor refer to the actress as his step sister or role play that they are related. Or they want to see the barely legal teen act younger than she is. So for those people, they are more likely to view videos with those labels for the theme itself. But other people click on them just because they are safe picks.
So I guess you can't really tell if someone just wants predictable vanilla porn when they click on a "barely legal" video or if they actually are into the theme.
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 6h ago
My post was directed towards people who specifically search out "barely legal" porn.
•
u/bigdonut100 1∆ 3h ago
I am a bisexual man, I am just starting to dip my toe into the cross dressing pool, with women's thigh highs and a wig and a few things, I wear a white collar button up shirt, and a black bow tie, because the idea is to look like a schoolgirl.
The exact image I have in my head when I gussy myself up is a hentai character called Miko Mido from "La Blue Girl" who is an "18 year old college student" in the International English release, but a 16 year old high school girl in the original Japanese edition.
I am a 34 year old cis man.
Sometimes I attract equally 34 year old men, sometimes I attract 21 year olds, or 18 year olds with fake ids. How is how I present myself "a sign of youth" when the other person is actually closer to 18?
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 2h ago
I don't know and your anecdote is not really compelling. Again, the ages of yourself or those interested in you isn't the topic, although I'd argue that if you're "marketing" yourself with characteristics that primarily denote child-like qualities, then the people who look for those child-like qualities will surely find that attractive.
•
u/bigdonut100 1∆ 1h ago
Because I don't see why children have a monopoly on these qualities if they are something you could find in a adult partner.
It's like, 90% of the people you see with braces are kids, 10% are adults, so it's a "childlike feature."
There's nothing actually intrinsically child-like about them. You have to point to something that enhances neotiny (look it up) in order to be "intrsically" child-like, and then you have to deal with the fact that adult women are more neotinous than adult men.
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 1h ago
Again, the focus of my OP is not on dating or relationships, rather on the consumption of genre of pornography entitled "barely legal." It's not just braces.
•
u/bigdonut100 1∆ 59m ago edited 40m ago
Right, take the distinction between "barely legal porn" and normal porn. Whether it's braces or... *checks notes* stuffed animals, or whatever.
Apply that distinction to two real possible girlfriends you can have that are both 18+. Why would that make you atrracted to "childlike features"? You can literally bang an 80 year old grandma with a stuffed animal
Things like making her look younger via certain forms of makeup, etc, would make sense because it's part of the biology of neotiny, but that's not generally apart of barely legal porn exclusively, it's a part of all porn and non-porn equally pretty much
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 14m ago
You're fixated on the visual appearance and not the whole context. If the girlfriend in your scenario is marketing themselves as "barely legal," dressed in Catholic school clothing with braces and flashing their ID to highlight that their 18th birthday was yesterday, I would say that the men attracted to such a person are attracted to child-like qualities. The fantasy of minor-ness is the point in such attraction.
•
u/Ready_Set_Noped 1∆ 7h ago edited 7h ago
Would it make it less creepy to you if the viewer was envisioning themselves as the young person? They aren’t attracted to the young person in the videos persay but attracted to idea and situation of being that young person?
I doubt most are like that or even half but I do believe there are people that watch that kind of porn wanting to be the person rather being attracted to them.
•
u/AdventurousPen7825 5∆ 2h ago
How would that change anything, though? You're just giving a reason for why some people prefer (or are at least sexually attracted to) young-looking girls.

It would be less creepy. But, like you, I don't believe that most consumers of the genre envision themselves as the young person.
•
u/Ready_Set_Noped 1∆ 4h ago
Yes but I do believe it sizable enough that it counters your claim which seems to be pretty absolute in the language you use.
It like saying “anyone that watches bdsm porn is a sadist”. But thats an untrue statement because there’s definitely a portion of people that are watching it that fantasize about being the masochist.
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 4h ago
I don't believe it's a significant amount. Single digit percentage. I'd wager that the majority of consumers who view such content are male and I scoff at the notion that they envision themselves as the young female actress with the child-like qualities. No offense.
•
u/Ready_Set_Noped 1∆ 4h ago
Gay and bi people exist Klaus.
I don’t think you have much evidence to back up what you think the percentage is.
Do you think people that enjoy BDSM porn because they envision themselves being the sub are single digits?
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 4h ago
You're right, I have no hard evidence on this particular topic. But we do have circumstantial evidence. Men are more likely to watch porn and self-report studies show that men are more likely to identify with male performers. What makes you think I didn't include LGBTQ?
•
u/Ready_Set_Noped 1∆ 4h ago
Your view uses language that is absolute. We’ve both established here that it is not.

But only on the margins. My view is that people who specifically look for and consume "barely legal" pornography are attracted to child-like qualities. I acknowledge that there may be a tiny subset of consumers who specifically watch that type of porn to envision themselves as the person with those child-like qualities. Of course, that's also a troubling notion, but for a different reason.

It's one possible explanation, sure. Not the only one: they could also respond to the forbiddenness. (Less likely if it's the only "forbidden"-adjacent type they're interested in.)
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 5h ago
Yes I completely agree. They're responding to the forbiddenness of arousal towards child-like qualities.
•
u/Irhien 38∆ 4h ago
So if someone got off on porn about cheating, would you say they are aroused by lying and secrecy?
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 2h ago
Yes, they're aroused by the forbiddenness of cheating.
•
u/Irhien 38∆ 1h ago
Yes, by forbiddenness of cheating, no, not by lying or secrecy. Lying and secrecy only serve to convey the fact that something forbidden is going on. They wouldn't be arousing if they were about something irrelevant. Likewise, your title is wrong in the case of people attracted to forbiddenness, it's not about childlike traits for their own sake, it's about pretending something forbidden is going on.
•
•
u/Rigorous_Mortis 7h ago
I would say I agree but this isn't the "I agree sub" lol so I'll try something.
There's been an increase in a certain style with young women referred to as "cutecore". It could be described as hyperfeminine with pink and frills and some other features that could be seen as otherwise child-like. However, the people who have the style or enjoy it argue that these pieces of fashion don't belong to children. Men or women who like this style and find it attractive may struggle to find porn that exists with this particular look since the name keeps changing.
I could argue that someone who explicitly searches for "barely legal" porn is actually looking for the look itself and not the redline that you described.
This would be similar to someone who searches for BDSM porn but is really just looking for ropes or leather itself and can't find the right way to search it outside of that.
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 6h ago
I recognize that you largely agree.
In your third paragraph: Yes, they're looking for the "look" of child-like characteristics on adults. I don't see how this is a rebuttal. They can frame it in their mind however they want but the fact remains they're aroused by the qualities that make that "look" and those qualities signal minor-ness.
•
u/ProblematicTrumpCard 6∆ 33m ago
school uniforms, braces, stuffed animals, "tiny," "innocent," etc
Half the actresses in barely legal porn are over 30.
Age-related porn is kind of 3 categories: Barely legal, MILF and Granny. All Barely Legal means is that you're seeking out women that are under 30. MILF is generally 30-50. Granny is over 50.
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 8m ago
I don't agree and the age of the actress doesn't necessarily matter. I don't agree that that's all "barely legal" is when a cursory search of the term shows women in braces, wearing Catholic school garb and holding their partially covered ID to show that their birthday was yesterday.
•
u/anooblol 12∆ 7h ago
I feel like the “fantasy” they’re looking for is:
A person coming of age finds a mentor, and then becomes compulsively attached/loyal to them.
I think maybe you can call that “immaturity”. But I think that’s just a trait of immature people. Meaning, if they found a 40 year old woman to act in that way, their fantasy would similarly be met.
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 5h ago
maybe some, but many of the most viewed "barely legal" videos on pornhub are gangbang videos.
•
u/tacobell41 7h ago
I’m confused at what your view is. That people who like barely legal porn like youthful looking people?
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 5h ago
My view is that consumers who specifically search out "barely legal" porn are attracted to child-like traits.
•
u/tacobell41 5h ago
I mean, humans prefer neotenous features. It’s biological programming. I don’t think anyone would deny what you say.
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 5h ago
I had to look up neotenous. Well done.
My rebuttal after reading about it is that neoteny refers to facial morphology in adult age ranges. My claim is about context and styling. School uniforms and other costumes, stuffed animals, "first time," etc., don't change anyone's face. They're signals that "this person is child-like." It's the framing in the "barely legal" porn context and not the individual features in a vacuum.
•
u/tacobell41 5h ago
I see. When I think “barely legal” I think the old “barely legal” series that went for college girls on spring break because they were young not because they were wearing infantilizing outfits.

Who cares? Why is it a big deal to you if someone is attracted to 'childlike traits'? So long as they're keeping it 18+ why does it matter?
•
u/klaus1986 1∆ 35m ago
Moral disgust and an innate sense to protect biologically immature but legal adults.
•
u/twilight_aeon 1h ago
This sounds to me like saying "preferring 'black women' porn points to an interest in black female traits" — yeah, duh.
So the only way I can think of to challenge that would be to argue that "barely legal" and "childlike" aren't exactly synonymous. That is, that in a Venn Diagram, the circle representing the appeal of "barely legal" could contain elements that don't also belong to the circle of "childlike" — maybe a viewer could like the taboo of breaking rules/laws in general (or skirting that line as much as you can get away with), and this is one possible version of that?
