Every day she goes on a walk with my MIL in the mornings and late afternoons with the dogs. This is her favorite time of day because she LOVES hunting for grasshoppers. We came up to visit this weekend and she had to show us her tricks!
I taught mine to jump on my lap or on my legs when extended to another chair but it might be worse now because someone usually just stepped in a cecal poop. It is just the way it goes. These girls were adult rescues and I wanted to teach them it is safe to be close and get handled for medical inspections and care. It worked fast.
Good thing I wear certain clothing just to be with the chickens.
When I bring meat for them, they all get so excited and poop right there next to my chair. I try to hand the meat pieces to them when they are on the ground but they get so excited I have to move places half way through distribution time so there isn't poop for them to step in right before the lap jumping starts. Meat really gets them going and is a 4-letter word around here if one doesn't actually have meat to give to them right away.
This morning when we were helping my MIL bring the teenager girls out, one of them snatched my husbands ring and ran with it. It’s loose on his pinky and he was standing holding treats for them and as soon as he bent down to try to grab empty bowl, she managed to grab it just right and when he pulled his hand back it flew off and she grabbed it and RAN. It took us like 10 minutes to find it and he thought she may have swallowed it 😂
Edit: Now that I know her history, let her have fingers, all the fingers. What a great recovery and at least she doesn't have razorbeak like mine do. I spoil the heck out of my rescue girls who were all sick when I got them. So what if I might be missing a few digits soon. Lol
This is a cool trick that can backfire occasionally. Use caution when there aren't a lot of bugs to distract her! All my hens do this and it gets hectic when they are all trying at the same time. Also, the random jumps and painful pecks at my hands when they "think" I have something. Be on guard!
Or Bloody Mary jumping to try to take my vape... At least only one chicken thinks the vape might be something good. I showed it to her several times and told her it is nasty but she doesn't believe me because she thinks I am eating it.
My Scaleybug would fly to me to get a treat safely without other birds getting it. However, she would also fly to me for no reason. I had to teach her to fly to the forearm which she got so good at, even from a distance. I still had to be careful because she would land on me out of nowhere when I was just scooping poops or minding my business. I miss her so much.
Helen has quite the lore here! She wouldn’t have made it out there where we found her another day. We didn’t have any prior knowledge or experience with hens so after all was said and done and we treated her for fly strike and a bad respiratory infection, come to find out those are two of the hardest things to treat especially with no experience. She’s definitely the star of the show and now that my MIL got her 8 sisters that are finally almost her size, she’s gonna have a whole girl gang. Your Bloody Mary sounds like my kinda gal! She knows where the good stuff is 😂😂
I read your other posts after I saw a comment that said she has been seen here before. I am so glad you found Helen! I also love updates and when people find the time to update on how their chickens are doing, bad and good. Helen is so lucky she found y'all!
I have Bloody Mary posts in my history as I was so concerned with her hyperlaying. She laid every single day, sometimes hours earlier than the last days egg and it really scared me. She is finally doing a slow stealth molt and is laying like a normal in season laying hen with days off.
Here is her HUNGRY look. I just can't say no to that.
Haha! I love her face!! She’s saying “if you don’t hurry up with the food I’m gonna SCREAM” Helen lays an egg every other day. For about two weeks she was laying daily right after she got back to 100% but now her regular laying schedule is every other day. When we brought her to my MIL house to live there since my husband and i live in the city, my MIL had no expectations. She said at the very least she’d use Helen’s poop for compost. When she started laying it was like an unexpected gift! We just wanted her to live out the rest of her days however long that may be happy healthy and worry free. Now she’s the spoiled rotten head chick in charge and she knows what she wants and she will make sure she gets it! lol
