Discussion Do Neurodivergent people require a different approach of practising to achieve mastery, compare to regular deliberate practice?

This question came up because I have read about how a lot of the methods that we use for neurotypical people(planning, reward/consequence, breaking large tasks down to smaller ones) do not work someone with Autism and ADHD as for completing tasks.

I wonder if the same phenomenon exists for practising. As far as I know, the standard method involves isolating what is difficult, then you use rhythm variations to fix, and then try to integrate it in the grand scheme. I find the results work far better than playing the same thing over and over again and then moving the metronome up gradually. However, I want to know if there are actually more efficient and scientific ways that someone with Autism or ADHD can practice from day to day. I don't know if this is a factor at all.

Also, do most neurodivergent brains just learn slower, plateau earlier, and forget more easily or is this mostly just a personal thing, and likely not true at all, or we have been using neurotypical methods all along?

Music Do you prefer?

I know this division is somewhat arbitrary. What I mean is the distinction between the young Mahler and the circle of works associated with Des Knaben Wunderhorn and the later period marked by a more tragic and darker works.

Early Mahler (Symphonies 1-5)?
Late Mahler (Symphonies 6-10)?

Music This is the first time I get so affected by a piece of music - Ollie's Theme by Siddhartha Khosla

I dont even know how to start. I discovered this piece a couple weeks ago through the movie Swapped and honestly I think it literally saved me. Ive been at my lowest recently and this specific orchestra piece is doing something to me that I cant explain, like I feel alive for the very first time. I listen to it with my noise canceling headphones and feels like I get into some sort of trans. I can feel the vibrations through every single cell of my body. Ive been affected by music before through the lyrics but this is something entirely different and life awakening.

Recommendations for non-Western classical music?

Thumbnail

Sometimes it feels broadening and refreshing to listen to non-Western classical music as well. I find it particularly interesting when pieces incorporate instruments that are not typically associated with Western classical music—the sitar, for instance. Tan Dun, for example, also employs intriguing instrumental combinations in his compositions.

I realize, however, that it is somewhat difficult to define what "non-Western classical" even means; that is why I am interested in hearing recommendations for ethnic music from various countries in general.

Music I made a score-following video of Vivaldi- Concerto for two violins (RV522) – you can watch violin notes light up note by note

What I love about this concerto is how the two solo violins chase each other – one starts a phrase, the other answers or takes over. It’s much easier to hear once you can see both parts at the same time

So I made a video where the first violin part scrolls with the recording and each note lights up as it’s played: Vivaldi - Two Violins

Do you find it easier to follow the dialogue between the two violins with the score in front of you? Any feedback welcome.

The ultimate Rossini tenor showdown

World renowed Rossini tenor Juan Diego Flórez travelled to Shanghai last week. He sang in the opening gala at the inauguration of the Shanghai Grand Opera House yesterday, and then appeared tonight at the Expo Cultural Park in an open-air gala with guest tenor Shi Yijie, another brilliant Rossini tenor and President of the Shanghai Opera House. Diego Matheuz conducted the Shanghai Opera House Orchestra.

Both tenors were impeccable in artistry and technique. In the final moment of showdown, the duo encored O Sole Mio, as captured in this video. Now who's the better Rossini tenor?

The video also captured how I got to the Park from the other side of Huangpu River. Yes I took a ferry and cycled there.

How much does originality matter if a performance still moves you?

I don’t always find Trifonov especially original, but his playing still moves me a lot. How much does originality matter to you when you’re choosing a performance to listen to?

Help me get into chamber music

In all my years of listening to classical I somehow never heard a chamber piece! The vast majority of my listening is either solo piano or big orchestral pieces like symphonies or tone poems, how to get into chamber then?

If you'd like my taste, I love music that is melodic and beautiful.

Both of these films have been on my mind recently and I so badly wish they kept making these in any form. I was wondering if anyone also loved these films and what pieces would they would love to see in the film if they made another one?

What is the type of classical music that they dance to in movies

I really don't know anything about classical music, but when I listen to the classical station there's a certain type of classical music that drives me nuts and I hate it so much. It's very dance like and repetitive, and I feel like it's always a kind of music that when you're watching movies of old times and they're in gowns and it's like a ball at somebody's manner or something and they're all dancing around it's that kind of music. It's very jumpy, pop like, repetitive, catchy. It's not like the big flowing wild kind of stuff, or like giant Orchestra bits.

Concerto in G Major: IV. Allegro is an example that I was just listening to that came up on the radio and exemplifies the style

Eerie Music for Dance Students

Hi. I am looking for some eerie music to use with my ballet students. They are teenagers. We are asked to prepare something for a parent showing around Halloween time. I have used Danse macabre the past 2 years so I think it’s time to move on! Some other pieces I’ve considered are Khachaturian’s Masquerade Waltz, Prokofiev’s In The Palace Waltz from Cinderella, and Ravel’s Valley of the Bells. I thought this sub might have some stellar suggestions though and wanted to ask. I’m always looking to expand my playlists.

Music Oct 19: Birthday of Geirr Tveitt (1908–1981).

Last year I wrote here that the Norwegian composer lost 80 percent of his work in a fire. I had the details wrong. In 1960 an avalanche crushed his house above Norheimsund. Ten years later, on July 12, 1970, the house burned to the ground, and with it most of his manuscripts, about 300 works, many never published. Norwegian and German sources put the loss at around 80 percent of everything he had written. He found it very hard to compose afterwards.

A reader replied that his Piano Concerto No. 4, "Aurora Borealis," is one of the great piano concertos of the twentieth century. It survived. Here it is, and his Prillar (1931), an orchestral work he tore up himself in the 1930s; his son found and reconstructed it after his death.

Recommendations for a fan of Verklarte Nacht?

I am trying to get into classical music and so far this piece has stuck with me. I like the use of layered melodies. Not exactly harmonies, but it sounds like two or more streams of thought that continuously weave around each other, and at other times they are entwined in the same melody. It's a very narrative piece; the kind that reveals more details the more you listen to it. I like that there are several parts that convey indescribable emotions. If you could recommend a piece that meets any one of these criteria, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
