Society Scenes from France today, tens of thousands of student taking to the streets as a part of the giles jaunes movement against social injustice.

In what the New York Times today describes as a ‘moment of national reckoning’, French students set fire to the Lyon tourism office, briefly storm the Marseilles town hall and block key infrastructure

Bonjour, collapseniks. It's that time of year for the racist trolls to come out of the woodwork and get squashed.

If your post was removed, it was probably Rule 1, our most commonly violated rule. Be civil, report any bad users, and move on. We'll deal with it. If the thread gets locked, don't be surprised.

Vive la France. Vive la liberte.

That's not necessarily what matters here. This is why protests are so meaningless in the US - they're not interrupting or interfering with anything so only matter to the people throwing the parade for their grievance.

Sometimes things get bad enough that a response is demanded and for that response to be heard, it needs to get in the way. When people hold their economy hostage, the owner class is forced to listen to the demands of the people, but as long as the protests are permitted and organized, there's no reason to listen to the demands of the protestors because they've already demonstrated that they'll limit their protests to weekends in the designated protest areas (again, a parade).

Parades don't demand anything. They display something, they might even ask for something, but there is no demand being made.

It's what makes the US culturally fascist. Even the people who disagree with the policies of their leadership wouldn't dream of getting in the way of people commuting to work. There's no backbone to resistance in the US

13

u/ZinZinZinZinZinZ 8h ago

well there were calls for a general strike in france but unfortunately the unions proposed a date in november at the earliest which would probably be too late to capitalize on the current unrest.

11

u/ChromaticStrike Inert collapsoid 7h ago edited 7h ago

Just remember, It's a double edged sword, disruption and destruction of public element can turn the opinion against the protest even in France.

Successful protest puts fear into the people deciding, you don't get that by destroying tourist office IMO.

I'm a bit on the fence on highschooler doing protest tbh. Normally it should be adults doing those, parents should be the one outraged, and kids in class, not getting tortured by cops.

I think you folks are just too spoiled and should be forced to live in other countries before acting as if you understand what poverty even means, acting like you have any life experience under real fascism to call USA fascist 😂

As an immigrant, i have no reason to complain in the US even if i become homeless. Its still a better life compared to what i had to put up with in Iran

u/SweetAlyssumm 10h ago

The retirement age was changed - it was increased by two years.

5

u/PM_ME_DEAD_CEOS 8h ago

Nope, the law is suspended.

9

u/SweetAlyssumm 5h ago

"The legal age at 64 years will no longer apply to persons born in 1968, but only for persons born from 1969. The legal age varies according to your year of birth, it is set between 62 years and 9 months and 63 years and 9 months for the generations 1964 to 1968."

So the old people get a break but not the young.

1

u/PM_ME_DEAD_CEOS 3h ago

Yes, because the law is suspended until 2027 election.

well if you can't afford to offer the social services and have allowed mass immigration, lack of rule of law and identity politics to make decisions not based in reality what did they expect ??

It going to get worse not better, and france is not alone.

60+% of all public spending ended up inside the pocket of the 1800 richest french families.

So yeah, rage about your racism on the internet instead of the class warfare the humanity is loosing against its fascist pedoligarch all around the world.

1

u/uber_neets 2h ago

What it's changed is that Marine Le Pen will absolutely become president of France next year and then she'll get to work.

127

u/Old_Toby2211 11h ago

The cultural propensity for protest which France has managed to cultivate is exceptional. I hope it endures

51

u/1erRPIMA-fiesta 11h ago

Crucial thing is to teach the kids.

I'm not kidding: popular culture only endures if it's being transmitted. I've been transmitting some knowledge to unknown college kids the other day, I was glad and I hope it served them against the pigs

4

u/rougarou-te-fou 2h ago

Our kids are being lost to brian rot and alpha male content.

11

u/diedlikeCambyses 7h ago

Yes same, but this situation is intractable because of simple math. France no longer has the money to live as it was/is. It either has to greatly increase productivity, slash spending, add taxes, raise retirement age, lower pensions, etc etc. Something has to give.

4

u/kangourou_mutant 1h ago

We have many rich people. Let's take money where it is.

0

u/diedlikeCambyses 1h ago

What will you break by doing so? How will you take it? With what mechanism?

3

u/erevos33 1h ago

Maybe, and this is just me, the world's finances should not be held captive by various stockmarkets which are basically rich people gambling. This is not an issue that can be treated on a national level, we need global action.

As far as means to take their wealth? Make all industries publicly , or at least worker, owned. Do not sell land/utilities/homes to non-residents or large corporations (foreign or domestic). Restrict one house per family at maximum.

11

u/wasraelx 11h ago edited 11h ago

Yea, bless them

It really shoulda been America leading the charge given how obviously it is shattering, and of course it will be Britain last, but the French still got it

34

u/rougarou-te-fou 11h ago

Americans just get shot by their police. The government would rather militarize against Americans than help them. Trump would happily kill anybody who so much as spits at the WH.

26

u/a1b3c2 10h ago

And if they don't get shot by police, they'll get shot by bootlickers crossing state lines to "defend the country" with zero consequences

21

u/uski 10h ago

French folks would fight back real quick, doesn't matter if police shoots etc.

Protesters would come with hunting rifles, mortar (they do this already) etc.

27

u/rougarou-te-fou 10h ago

Americans haven’t come with their own firepower en masse. The one peaceful protester (Alex J Pretti) that did got shot and killed by ICE.

I don’t know what it would take for Americans to protest like the French. The general atmosphere is one of complete demotivation and complacency.

It’s just a different beast. I’m not saying Americans have done enough, but all protests have died under threats of military action or police violence. Half our neighbors are in support of the American getsapo, so it’s a very weird vibe.

The size of our country also leads to a strange apathy. I live in a continuously disenfranchised area that is predominately black and that the state is trying to destroy through economic neglect. My family lives in one of the richest parts of the country and doesn’t believe even half of what I say about the decay of my own city.

On my 20 hour drive to my parents I cross through rural areas that are filled with people who can’t even name three European countries or define political terms, let alone show up to a protest. On the same drive I cross through DC and travel in NYC and it’s like visiting different countries as it pertains to will, capacity and awareness.

I don’t know. We are in trouble.

12

u/uski 9h ago edited 8h ago

I think it's cultural and maybe even religious. There are folks in the US living in absolutely terrible conditions, think in a leaky home breathing black mold, having to ration insulin, barely able to afford food... and being "grateful" for it. In France they'd be in the streets already with pitchforks...

13

u/rougarou-te-fou 8h ago

Good point. I’ve seen it. I know people who ration insulin. It’s like we have been bred to be complacent.

12

u/wasraelx 7h ago

Well, in a very real way you have been. That climate of complacency was engineered.

1

u/hippydipster 6h ago

And if you did that in the US, the police would be thrilled to escalate and you'd hand most elections over to the right wing who would thank you for giving them the excuse they need to grab more power.

1

u/rougarou-te-fou 2h ago

Trump is absolutely waiting for an escalation to declare martial law.

13

u/wasraelx 11h ago edited 10h ago

While I get that, I’m from places that Americans always yell ‘why don’t they just protest’ or even ‘they deserve the tyrant because they don’t topple him’, when the right to assembly, freedom of the press and free speech are completely gone already and going to a protest truly is a suicide. It’s not yet in the US.

Freedom of speech is a ‘use it or lose it’ right, and sure seems most Americans already surrendered it. Maybe you’re right and it is too late, but there sure was a lot of time to push back.

What’s the second amendment for?

12

u/rougarou-te-fou 10h ago

I don’t know the answer at all. I know Americans who show up and are trying to fight in any way they can, and I know Americans more concerned with where their TEMU order is.

I’m American, and watching all this erode under our feet is frightening. I think we are just a Surveillance state owned by billionaires and we have been kept for so long in cages that are just nice enough to tolerate.

55

u/Nowhereman123 11h ago

It's funny how Reddit as a whole seems generally supportive of these types of protests in France, meanwhile whenever climate activists do something like block a single road in America the comments are all calling for their summary executions.

11

u/rougarou-te-fou 10h ago

It’s the same people who cheer for the Rebellion and then vote for the Empire.

Most MAGAts I know think they are Luke Skywalker even though they voted for Vader.

-8

u/Vid-Master 9h ago

I think that all those "wacky" climate activists are paid actors by oil companies. And it worked because people absolutely hate climate activists now

8

u/Nowhereman123 9h ago

I mean, even if that's the case (which I don't really buy), it wouldn't explain why people seem to react to French protests where they're literally causing city-wide riots with "Man I wish we did that" and reacting to oil protestors blocking a single road in the US with "OMG THEY NEED TO RUN OVER THESE TERRORISTS NOW!"

130

u/unluckyleo 11h ago

Meanwhile Americans do nothing as Trump bends the knee to Putin

75

u/wasraelx 11h ago

Fr, I don’t want to ever hear another American call the French cowards lol. They have good EU standards of living overall, yet each time they’re threatened they protest and protest HEAVY right away. They’d be burning Washington DC to the ground by now

17

u/rougarou-te-fou 10h ago

The coward thing is so strange. I think it’s a remnant of the Iraq war when France refused to participate (reasonable and correctly). That’s when there was this weird campaign to call French Fries “Freedom Fries”.

I don’t know anyone who still holds this notion outside of MAGAts.

2

u/rematar 2h ago

I think some people see the government of France being cowards in war.

I think it's because the leaders in France understand the power of the people.

3

u/rougarou-te-fou 1h ago

I have never seen the French as cowards. Nothing about their history suggests that and I loathe the reputation in America.

1

u/artisanrox yikes, man 3h ago

48

u/1erRPIMA-fiesta 11h ago

As a frenchman, I'm still amazed (and a little concerned) about the apathy of the Americans. I mean, they claimed to be so much more than passive slugs. And their popular history is full of acts of bravery against unjust authority and robber barons. So why aren't they acting against a Russian agent in their White House? I really don't get it

13

u/Stop_Sign 10h ago

Many reasons really, but my prevailing theory is that all of the activism desires are co-opted by grifter social media personalities that take all the attention and do absolutely nothing with it. They do not organize protests or push legislation. So all of the people that would normally participate in something like this are instead consuming garbage and liking and subscribing, resulting in no resistance at all. No leaders of movements will ever emerge from this because as soon as they have a message worth saying, the clout chasers will use their platform to say it and do nothing with it. The actual leaders trying to organize will never be able to compete for attention with these terminally online sinkholes

America has this behavior more than Europe because we are more isolated, leading to a significantly higher rate of being online.

7

u/Critical_Wrap5617 8h ago

Also, America is a very conservative and fundamentally right-wing country, it seems. I guess it is because of the patriarchal religious thing?

32

u/KlicknKlack 10h ago

Its about size. With France as an example, since you are a frenchman. To get to the Bastille from one of your southern most towns (Toulouse), it would take 6hrs 30mins by car or 6hrs by train, two different lines.

To get from Seattle, Washington State to the White House in D.C. --- 41 hours by car or 2 days and 17 hours by way of: 3 regional buslines, A total of 7 different busses, then two local buses, for a total of 9 different buses over the course of 2 days, 17 hours.

Almost every European country is like this. Straight-line distance is 3,738.70km. That is more than the straight line distance from Kabul to Paris!!!

The sheer size and distribution of the US population makes it hard to protest. Not only getting to the protests, but (a) Getting supplies for long protests, (b) money for long protests, (c) news out about long protests that isn't filtered by the corporate media.

The US has had protests, the Largest protests in the US's history happened:

  • Largest: March 2026 - 8-9 Million

  • Second: Oct 2025 - 6-7 Million

  • Third: Jan 2017 - 3.3-5 Million

  • Fourth: Jan 1970 - 1-3 Million

Largest French Protest in French History: January 11, 2015. Marche Republicaine. 3.7 - 4 Million.

Ratio wise to population, french protest more. But size wise, the US has had bigger as recent as March of this year.

As for why the US countrymen don't take on acts of bravery against unjust authority?

  • On average the French Police have 50-70 police shootings (4 Fatal per 10 Million).

  • On average the US Police have ~1,100 FATAL police shootings per year.

  • The US police forces are less trained, heavily armored/armed, and trained to think of the protesters as an other.

  • The news will barely, if at all, cover the deaths of protesters.

So, what does your individual act of sacrifice get you in the US? A quiet, painful, and brutal death. With out access to healthcare. And what do you risk? Everything.

I wonder what its like in France? Do you get completely removed from society for engaging in violent protests?

17

u/JimKellyCuntry 10h ago

Think this a pretty good response showing how the size of the US makes it seem like past protests are nothing when they are millions and millions.

There's a lot of things that are affected by the size of the country good and bad

6

u/rougarou-te-fou 10h ago edited 2h ago

I think one thing people don’t get is that our police force kill us often and over nothing. Storming the WH would be a massacre.

Edit: the police harm us, disappear is, attempt to murder is, etc., it’s not just about literally killing.

Less than 10 unarmed people are shot on a yearly average by American police.

When you figure there’s somewhere about 6 million police interactions every year in the USA  10/6,000,000=0.00000167%

Let’s just say for the sake of numbers you have a weapon:

1100/6,000,000=0.000183

So more likely but still statistically rare as all hell.

You’re more likely to be struck by lightening twice in a year than you are to be shot by an American cop if you’re not armed with a deadly weapon.

2

u/rougarou-te-fou 2h ago

Are you counting ICE, as well?

Also, I shouldn’t say shot. I should say choked, hurt, beat, disappeared, etc.,

Far more than 10 are victims of police brutality.

9

u/Schapsouille 10h ago

There's nothing to be amazed of. 80 years without a general strike. No American alive has taken part in a national uprising. Let that sink in. Some of the tamest and most institutionalized cattle to ever grave this earth. On par with north koreans at this point. Enven their opposing party does everything to make sure a mediocre coup loser of a shitstain can fuck them over again.

Expect nothing from Americans. They made their bed and complied all the way to lie in it. As compliant workers, voters and taxpayers they in fact enable this madness and are, objectively, the ennemy of our species.

Propaganda. We live in a psyop. For instance: the no kings, billionare funded, 'protest' happening in my city today. It's not a protest, it's a billionare funded data collection point.

It’s a size issue. I know that sounds weak, but the further you go in the states, the less sense of collectivism there is. I live in a state that might as well not exist in the US and was even discussed as being a lost cause after Katrina in 2005.

I don’t even know what’s happening in the majority of the other states in the US, despite my will to know and my access to knowledge.

u/theimmortalgoon 11h ago

I know it seems like complacency, but it’s not the case.

During the first Trump presidency, I was in Portland and it was almost constant resistance.

The presidency started with a rightwing militia conquering part of the stateby force of arms. And it didn’t stop there, rightwing militias poured into Portland, exactly because Portland had a reputation of resistance. And this is what Nazis do.

When someone resisted the militias, gTrump sent marshals and boasted about murdering him without trial.

Still, we resisted. My work, my union, my friends, my family, my local newspapers, every facet of my life was based on resisting. We kicked out the FBI and stopped aiding the Feds.

They came in armed. The police did nothing. Then the police joined them. They assaulted us. They killed us.

After George Floyd, it accelerated. 50 Days. Then 100 days, which brought national and international attention. A year.

Unmarked vans of federal agents would go through the city and disappear people.

Part of the problem was that nobody was paying attention. Nobody could be bothered to do anything while we were out there getting killed while resisting. Just because you weren’t paying attention doesn’t mean that it wasn’t happening.

Even worse, everyone else was going out of their way to make Trump a big hero while we were spilling blood trying to stop him. NATO called him Daddy.

When he ordered a new trade deal with Canada and Mexico, both got on their knees to lick his shoes so he could stand up with a big victory.

Europeans did the same. And despite our attempts to stop him, his dipshit supporters could say at least he gets results since everyone else bent the knee.

Then we got a break, and Minnesota became the resistance. And you’ve seen the footage. And meanwhile, Canada and Europe still placated him and handed him victories and made deals with him and shook his hand and whatnot.

Now, of course, a fucking decade after the resistance started. With your lack of attention, your failure to help, your years of placating him, you act like Americans are superheroes that need to be activated to save you.

And I’m honestly really sorry that it’s on the world’s doorstep now. But, in a sense, you’re joining the resistance you’ve been doing your best to undermine a decade too late.

(Original with links)

4

u/artisanrox yikes, man 7h ago

Minnesota! of all places! was abolutely terrifying in it's locked-solid resistance. I hope more places are like that but I don't really want to go through the process of having to find that out.

u/fedfuzz1970 9h ago

u/ChromaticStrike Inert collapsoid 7h ago edited 7h ago

Even worse, everyone else was going out of their way to make Trump a big hero while we were spilling blood trying to stop him. NATO called him Daddy.

You realize the situation NATO is in? NATO didn't vote for trump, with your kind of thinking we get double whammy, not only do we get backstabbed but we get blamed for trying to keep the vanishing candle flame alight. Sucking to trump without cost is very wise actually. Unless you prove me that actually saying that had any impact on trump's interior policy, I suggest you edit your comment to remove part of the victim blaming. US is entirely responsible for its own demise.

Europe dependency on the US was very profiting the US but when the time to fulfill the bargain has come, boom suddenly Europe got to be independent, but still has to buy US weapons. I love the level of hypocrisy from the USians, I hope this will go in the history books and remain there as the proof nobody shall ever trust the US.

3

u/theimmortalgoon 6h ago

I was in a city where Trump was having people disappeared, where he bragged about having someone murdered without trial, and then would get on TV and say his policies were working because he cowed Europe and forced them to submit.

We still resisted.

You realize the situation we were in, right? With rightwing militias marching through the streets, gassing people out of bars and beating them, and working with Trump and the police, and Fox News to take people off the streets in unmarked vans.

Sure, “sucking up to Trump” had no price to you, but it helped win him another term in office that the American people had to endure.

Until Trump’s forces are killing people in European streets like he’s doing in American streets, I suggest you edit your comment to remove part of the victim blaming.

I mean, I will tell the person I know who will be in a wheelchair the rest of his life how you’re the actual victim of his administration because you made a deal with your “Daddy” so he could stand up and claim to have forced the EU to make “the biggest deal ever made” and Ursela Von der Leyen could get up there and lick his shoes in agreement at his amazing skills.

Sure, he’ll never walk again, and the thousands of people in gulags and questionable deportations may have had their lives ruined, or the FBI rooting out resistance, or the people murdered by ICE.

But I’ll bet they’ll all shed a tear for the real victim. You.

Thank you for your bravery in giving Trump everything he wants. I’m sure history will smile on your lack of sacrifice and spit on the losers getting beaten and shot by Trump’s forces.

Are you a bot or something?

You don't seem to be able to look at things from anywhere but your own little situation. You also seem to be void of imagination, though you should know now what it is to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. That's exactly what everyone's situation is.

I'm still waiting for any proof that one NATO guy trying to appease the clown by being friendly did anything to him and the US. One dude said something a bit weird (IMO it's a joke that got misinterpreted because media love to create drama and people that never read the articles use that now) and now you repeat it like it's what everyone think or something. That dude in question is not really representing anyone. NATO is not EU, nor it is France or Germany BTW. The deals in question they are with completely different persons. Go get some knowledge FFS.

because you made a deal with your “Daddy”

Maybe you should go take a breath of fresh air.

1

u/theimmortalgoon 3h ago

For some unfathomable reason I think that the policy of “sucking to Trump without cost is very wise actually” is pretty flimsy compared to going out there and risking life and gold to fight the bastard.

Fair enough if that’s your policy, I guess. But to declare that you should keep sucking up to Trump to get the benefits while some avenging American superhero needs to emerge to save you from your own actions is some pretty deep American propaganda.

They’re not superheroes. You’re allowed to fight back and don’t need to wait for them to do it for you.

1

u/ChromaticStrike Inert collapsoid 3h ago edited 3h ago

f “sucking to Trump without cost is very wise actually”

Nobody is doing that. It's words. Zelensky does that too, because we are all stuck with the fat clot. Deals are not done blindly and willingly, you just don't pull a blade out of your back and continue your business, you get bloody and you fall on the ground. That's Europe falling down. You don't like it? Can't change reality sorry.

US has the responsibility to deal with its own BS. Nobody is going to blame the US if you do deals with Le pen or whatever the next far right stooges we get in EU.

u/theimmortalgoon 3h ago edited 2h ago

That was a direct quote.

You literally said that “sucking to Trump without cost is very wise actually.” Which, for you, maybe.

But it’s incredibly destructive for anyone trying to oppose Trump.

It’s words that then gets cycled on Fox News and the Republican Party to show that Trump is an effective leader who the world fears and follows. They posted the “daddy” thing as a personal brand and used it as an excuse to shape policy, justifying his policies by declaring “I'm involved in Europe very much. NATO calls me daddy.”

This, and then that NATO dragged their feet when Obama asked them to “pull their weight” but then bending over to “sucking to Trump” has given Trump the political capital to tell politicians in the US and abroad (allegedly this is the case with Turkey, for instance) that he frequently justifies his actions on this kind of thing:

>Trump told supporters at a US rally on Wednesday night that America is now 'the most respected anywhere in the world' under his leadership, declaring that 'nobody's laughing at us anymore' and insisting foreign leaders now admire the country.

Sucking up to Trump unfortunately gives his supporters support.

So while people are fighting and dying in Portland, Minnesota, New York, and other places, and you’re putting your tongue up Trump’s ass to be “wise” and only removing it long enough to say, “Why won’t the Americans save me from giving daddy a rimjob?” I hope you realize how insincere that sounds.

You don’t need to wait for the Americans. And you certainly don’t have to strengthen Trump.

1

u/ChromaticStrike Inert collapsoid 2h ago

So Obama stopped US weapon competition over European contracts to let Europe develop its own industry? That's great of him... Oh wait, he didn't, just like all the other POTUS it's about selling more weapon to Europe because we couldn't compete with the output. You can't have the butter, the money of the butter and the dairy woman.

Double faced motherfucker the lot of them, trump is just unhinged-ly blatant about it.

You keep hanging on that daddy thing, I heard one idiot using that word in a way that is open to interpretation. Trump lies all the time, I don't get why we should care.

I don't think you even read what I write so let's cut that useless discussion here, I'm past my point of tolerance.

1

u/theimmortalgoon 2h ago

You specifically asked me to expand on how the daddy thing affected policy. I gave you examples.

It’s also difficult to keep up with your responses since you edit them after posting. That happens, everyone has to do that now and then. But it’s hardly fair to then accuse me of not addressing each of your points.

You seem to have some fetishization for America. Which is consistent with its propaganda. But I’m guessing you don’t say, “The wise thing would be to give Putin everything he wants and hope for the Russian people to save us!”

But for some reason, you seem to think Americans have this unique power.

I think everyone should oppose Trump and not wait for an American superhero to come save the day.

Are you seriously blaming CANADA of all places for the US population's inability to do anything about the fascist takeover? What a joke.

0

Canada has since learned to stand up to him. And it has been absurdly effective.

But, yes, I think Canadians would also agree that giving Trump what he wanted as an initial tactic did not work.

What? A lot of you people just word-vomit a couple of things you don’t like (Trump, Putin, etc.) and think that’s an opinion. It’s not, it’s just word vomit. What does any of that have to do with anything being discussed? Which the FRANCE, which is on fire because of Muslim and far-left riots that have been going on for weeks, and tonight have intensified to the point of societal collapse.

Wow, buddy, please stop doing EXACTLY what you are fighting against.

Because of Far Left??? And Muslim??? Wow, just wow.

It's student, teenagers movement.

Absolutely not Lefty induced movement.

And nothing, nothing to do with Muslims. Really.

Doesn't look like "student protests" to me, looks like a bunch of bad actors taking advantage to light stuff on fire and loot shit.

2

u/HigherandHigherDown 2h ago

If you actually read any articles you'd probably see that trade unions and others are supporting the protests. Lots of comments in this thread saying "students," Ukraine needs to bomb more data centers.

14

u/Big-Criticism-8137 11h ago

They just wanted more care for education buildings like schools and universities . All the government had to do is to take it seriously. They didn’t have to magically fix all issues over night. It didn’t have to escalate like this. But if you do not take the future (the youth) of your country seriously maybe it did have to.

10

u/diedlikeCambyses 7h ago

The problem is France will erupt over a number of these issues but France no longer has the money to carry on as it is. What should be cut....... schools? Pensions? Pension age raised? All the free and subsidised services they enjoy that they can't afford? It'll bite either way. The numbers no longer work.

2

u/halogenhalogen 6h ago

Cutting pensions for schools seems like a no brainer

1

u/diedlikeCambyses 6h ago

I agree. My point was more that what about the issues that don't focus on pensions etc. Fuel taxes? Other general things. France cannot afford to continue as it is, generally.

4

u/Zealousideal_Job2900 6h ago

The issue is not that spending went up in any way, it’s that the state budget slashed its income because Macron had to make major gifts to the people who funded him and put him there. Billionaires in France have seen their wealth skyrocket over the past decade, and the CAC40 has never paid more dividends.

2

u/diedlikeCambyses 6h ago

I didn't say it went up. I'm saying they can not afford to continue to deliver the same services into the future.

0

u/0WatcherintheWater0 2h ago

What evidence do you have that this happened or that it had any measurable effect on the country’s budget?

Spending is causing a 5.4% deficit to GDP while the country is already just about the most heavily taxed economy in the world. That is the problem here.

1

u/kangourou_mutant 1h ago

I'll explain like you're 5: rich people have money, they used to pay taxes, now they pay way less taxes so the State has less money. That's not rocket science, if you lower taxes on rich people, your budget is suddently short and you have to whine about austerity.

If you check the tax rates during the last 100 years, you'll see that all countries were more prosperous when the rich were taxed at 70% or more.

1

u/Big-Criticism-8137 6h ago

You surely shouldnt cut money on things your country depends on in a few years. I get what you mean and its a global issue right now - sadly with no realistic solution that can keep the current system running or something that might be good for the future system. I honestly think we are at an important point in history where things need to break.

u/theimmortalgoon 11h ago

—edit—

I meant this as a response, but the links won’t transfer over so I’m leaving it here.

Start old text: I know it seems like complacency, but it’s not the case.

“Social Injustice.”

I was in Brussels a week ago when their students pulled some similar shit downtown. They piggy-backed on a peaceful protest earlier that day by union workers from various groups. Let me tell you, the only thing they were “protesting” was their inability to live a carefree, no consequences, fuck-everyone-and-everything-just-gimme-what-I-want, TikTok-famous life.

All I saw were “kids” that wanted to simply break and burn shit, push, shove and hurt people, because they were bored and wanted some free likes.

Later, I saw one on TV say he was tired of having to “sit in class for 8 hours a day.” It was too fucking hard.

Send the meteor.

6

u/ChromaticStrike Inert collapsoid 7h ago

I'm sick of this shit, stupid destruction of assets under the pretext of protest. Listen, apes, this stuff is built with OUR money, if you want to burn shits, go burn Macron's house, go burn bankster's cars, now we'd talk. This, this is just making everyone pay for that. Especially attacking tourism is directly damaging the city economy. I'm sure you'll get more teacher if the region has less money...

0

u/GantzDuck 5h ago

Exactly! Fascinating how it never seems to happen in rich neighborhoods.

1

u/ChromaticStrike Inert collapsoid 3h ago

Protests happen plenty in Paris though... I think you choose your words poorly there.

https://pouvoirs-magazine.com/2023/04/06/france-le-restaurant-la-rotonde-brule/

Pretty rich of a neighborhood. The problem is not the neighborhood but the target themselves. Torching business and people without relation to the issue is just as bad as the office on the photo.

4

u/AustEastTX 11h ago

I admire the French’s willingness to “tear it down and build it right” as needed.
We need more societies willing to risk it all to rebuild equitable structures.

0

u/jlw993 9h ago

Protesting underfunded education... By burning down schools. Wow so willing

5

u/AustEastTX 9h ago

Tearing down and rebuilding is NECESSARY when the power structure serves the few.

Burn it to the ground and rebuild it better.

2

u/Excellent_Mud6222 7h ago

You can't rebuild with nothing.

I wonder whether the French authorities will use tanks or live ammunition to crack down on protests, like the American authorities did during the Ohio protests in 1970 and Chinese authorities did during the Tiananmen Square protests, or not.

These protests in France have been going on for over a week now, and they’re pretty large-scale. I’m afraid the French authorities might do something similar.
