It’s the AK-203, but I bet they phrased it like that for more clicks.

Fuck it, why don't we just buy the BFG from Doom. Get Doomguy on the phone with the Generals!

Those rifles have a good stopping power due to its calibre and thus, a higher recoil. We tried using a lower-sized calibre but it wasn't really well recieved afaik.

holy fuddlore
Lower sized calibers are VERY well recieved. Literally every country that has its own 5.56 or 5.45 factories or another reliable supply chain for it uses it. Certain reigons only use 7.62 because they have a surplus of it from the soviets (but even then that’s kinda changed with the US leaving a buncha nice toys in Afghanistan).
That stopping power thing is a load of crap. 5.56 has more than enough energy to be lethal through level 3a armor (especially m855 and m855a1)). In reality there is no reason for the default rifleman to sacrifice faster accurate follow up shots, barrel longetivity, and suppressor durability for more penetration (or muzzle energy/hydrostatic shock chance) than they need unless you are using something that is going to be mounted to a tripod/bipod anyways, hence why we switched from .308 to 5.56 and 7.62 to 5.45.

A lot of Indian procurement consisted of Soviet equipment (and some French/British stuff here every once in a while) for the longest time. Only within the past 20 years, there has been some bigger procurement being done from American manufacturers. That too, is being shifted to general self-reliance and procurement from Indian suppliers.
The reason why 7.62 is being used as a standard again probably has to do with something behind 7.62 probably being predominant ammunition in the armed forces and the Indian battle doctrine. Also, Indian arms procurement is opaque and complicated, so I can't even tell you the actual reason why 7.62 is back. Apart from that, the only reason I can guess is the stockpile of ammunition and consolidation of caliber of rifles (to reduce logistical and manufacturing issues) being the main goal led to 7.62 being used.
To note, AK-203 were being made with mix of Russian parts at first and now is made 100% in India. The modern design and its benefits probably was lucrative enough that the drawbacks of ammunition could be ignored. The earlier battle rifle known as INSAS (5.56 caliber) had issues but the kinks were ironed out as time went on, but I guess it didn't stick well. AK-203 will be the main battle rifle from now on, with SiG-716i in lesser numbers.

I wonder why the US is spending billions outfitting everyone with a 6.8 then. Like, if it works so well then why change, specially when you have 5 decades worth of infra built around them.
Almost like somebody is realizing that killing cave dwelling insurgents or guerilla fighting forces of a poor country is easier than combat with anyone who can issue a standard ballistic plate to its troops.

tbh this is the same military that decided to adopt the p320 over its competitors after it only passed its trials when given additional leniency

u/FatModSad3 17h ago
Lol from a 203 that attached to every other riflemans m4 to a 320 solo slung around their back floppy dicking back and forth everytime they take a knee for 2 seconds during patrol....those things were a fucking joke. The military promotes on time in and those who can cut it doing literally anything else, will. That leaves the most senior miltary members being a majority of folks who need that structure and nonthinking for yourself way of life to survive.

Outa curiosity, did yall prefer it underbarrel or prefer it slung? Ive been wanting to dabble in 37mm launchers.

u/ohfourtwonine 18h ago
Because the army is stupid and traumatized from being shot at from a kilometer away in the mountains so now it thinks every rifleman needs to become a marksman

If the stopping power thing was such a load of crap why has the U.S military spent millions developing the NGSW which is chambered in 6.8 x 51mm? Purposefully chosen due to the concerns that 5.56 isn't capable against modern body armor?

Google “fragmentation”.
556 and 545 both have better “stopping power” than the antiquated 762, alongside better penetration, range and accuracy.

u/xxSYXxx 20h ago
That's what the country decided based on the requirements of the armed forces. I'm not an expert on calibre of ammunition, but we have been used to 7.62 for a long time now. Even Americans are moving to 6.8 from 5.56, but that's a different round.

u/Available_Hat_9833 20h ago
Americans are attempting to switch to 68 due to its longer range and better armor penetration. 762 on the other has way lower (accurate) range and worse penetration than both 556 and 545.

u/FatModSad3 17h ago
Need to specify 762 cause x51 is has almost double the point target range of 556 and exponentially more stopping power.
1
u/Available_Hat_9833 16h ago
That one is colloquially known as .308 NATO, as to avoid this exact situation. And there are no AKs that shoot .308 so I didn’t need to specify due to existing context.
Russians also make 7.62x54R, but that’s beside the point really.
1
u/FatModSad3 16h ago
I dont think its colloquially called 308 anything...because my rifle also shoots 308 which is a different round....762 nato i have heard it called.

Or use modern ak platforms that have better recoil control.

u/xxSYXxx 1d ago
AK-203 is modern, though.

u/HESSU_HOBO 1d ago
Oh. My stupid ass read that India got 203 pieces of ak47. And thought that is abnormally small deal.

Well production of ak47 was long shut in 1949, it's all akm now...
2
u/BaseForward8097 22h ago
Technically the AK-47 was never produced. The gun that started production in 1949 was just called "AK" (or AK type 1)

Lower calibre doesn't work on heavily drugged tangos
9
u/forkaerospace 22h ago
yes it does lol
8
u/Droideaka 21h ago
No the bullet is so weak that one bag of drugs in their coat will stop the bullet you see, 5.45 has less stopping power than than throwing sand at someone
