How does Gillette, Old Spice, (god forbid)AXE, etc. Not have booths at Cons??

I know, right?! Monster and Red Bull give out cans outside of the convention center. Why not an Old Spice activation?

At SDCC in 2010 Old Spice did gave out Moss Man Eternia Pine Deodorant. Those are highly collectable!

Only SDCC I’ve ever been. Probably saw it and thought nothing of it at the time.

It’s not so much body odor or deodorant these days for me. It’s the clothes smelling like dirty mop water that I experience more at Cons

I hate mildew smell. Its soooo easily identifiable. Usually happens when people let their clothes sit in the washer then dry them without rewashing them. Its gross for one and 2 it makes your washer and dryer smell that way. It just screams of laziness

Reminds me of that Family Guy Episode with Mort Goldman.
"I hear the words, I just don't understand what you are saying"

I’ve got a real hot take. I think the no deodorant thing is way overblown. I’ve been going to all sorts of conventions of varying sizes (comics and gaming) since 2017 and very rarely have I come across just really smelly people.

Yeah this same shit gets brought up each year. Probably by the same people. Most likely those are the people that need to shower and wear deodorant.

Trolls.
Why not call this post and the Unoriginal Poster (this is an ancient photo) exactly what they are? They’re a troll and this post is spam.
I really hope people are reporting it.

not that popular opinion probably, but cons should better manage the amount of tickets they sell and the capacity of venues. a lot of cons are overcrowded af. what makes it worse that most of the popular con venues have very bad air flow systems. and if regular visitors are mostly fine, cosplayers just get cooked inside their costumes.

i went to a con last weekend. small affair at a county fairgrounds. some guy reeked so bad of B.O. that he cleared out an entire corner of the hall. like, he was a walking war crime. the LAPD should hire him for riot control, would save millions on tear gas.
absolutely vile.
i felt bad for the vendors that couldnt escape his stank, and for the business they lost from the people fleeing his potent aura.
bad part, he didnt even look that filthy. like, clean shaven, short trimmed hair. clothes looked reasonably clean. just... B.O.

I’ve gone to the last four SDCC’s and I had heard the jokes before I went to my first one and it was brutal. It’s kind of sad that people need to be told this. I get that thousands of people are being crammed in a convention center in the summer of San Diego, but I travel to a lot of conferences for work and there aren’t any BO issues there.

Here after Comic Con Baltics 2025, I have smelt 0 BO which is really nice

I have shared a room with 3 other people and we all found time to take a shower every day. Don't be that person who leaves a lasting memory of a horrible smell to others

Is this still a problem at the bigger comic cons? I mainly go to Comic Con Revolution, LA Comic Cons, and some smaller ones where that issue is very few and far between. I've never done San Diego or New York. Is it still that big of an issue there?

Something i often forget is that the characters i cosplay wear outside clothes and i will be inside. It seems obvious when i say it but do keep in mind that you rarely see the characters you cosplay in convention centers with hundreds of people around

I'm nervous to go to MCM Comic Con on Sunday because I'm afraid I won't have enough deodorant on or something + I have issues with my teeth that I need to go to the dentist about but I can't go before Comic Con :(

u/RainbowLoli May 24 '25
Honestly I think everyone should keep a mini or pocket sized deodorant on them for any convention.

Well said, can't stand people that when they finally decided to go outside after a year they forget to shower and deodorant

Not just deodorant but some people just don’t shower or change their clothes. Like cmon

u/Dgsworld0 May 24 '25
The fact that people have to remind you at the conventions is wild ngl, I totally agree though

I said this when this was posted in another this morning.
I’ve been going to cons for years (truly, my first con was in 1983) and there are some people who fit the stereotype of con person. Rumpled clothes (probably slept in) no deodorant, greasy hair, all that.
However, for the most part people who go to cons are exactly like everyone else. They shower, wear deodorant, do all the normal things people do when going out. The problem is you are cramming thousands of people in a convention center that is usually fairly warm (ac can only do so much) and the way it’s laid out you have all these people packed together walking between the booths. People will get hot, they will sweat, they will start to smell
