Obviously there's lots of talk about the May MCM London and now that Critical Role are returning for MCM London in October, there's a lot of excitement. And it feels like everyone keeps overlooking disabled accessibility and treatment.
I went to my first ever MCM a couple of years ago when CR were there and I had an absolutely awful time. The website had said there was disabled accessibility but it was terrible. Despite walking with a cane I was directed to take an alternate entrance that was at the far end of the centre, was made to stand in a queue for 45 minutes just for the cloakroom and so by the time I had even truly entered the con I was shaking and in pain. There was never enough seating, staff were rude or outright ignored queries and even the entire reset room had 3 whole chairs in it (and an employee deciding to hoover the carpet while an autistic child was self soothing).
I later collapsed en route to my hotel and needed assistance to get the rest of the way (a normally 15 minute walk became almost an hour), but I faired better than most. I heard about the crush of people thanks to MCM tacking on extra last-minute cash-in-hand autographs for CR, and heard about people who passed out and were hurt. I heard about the people who were threatened by staff to be kicked out when they complained.
I'm ambulatory, not a wheelchair user, and in some ways I think this makes it more dangerous for me, because I think people just assume I'm fine and take less care. I was barged into and almost knocked over by so many patrons both days. I remember "queuing" for photo ops (just a mass gathering) and trying to ask the staff if I could step out to sit in the seated queue but they would blatantly ignore me each time (it was roped off and empty).
The Sunday was marginally better because I think there were so many complaints, and I was treated much better when heading to the CR panel. But online afterwards I heard so many people who had a terrible time and it honestly put me off.
I love CR and unfortunately the only way to really see them is at MCM as its the UKs biggest con. Every year since people have gotten excited for MCM and nobody ever speaks up about the accessibility issues and the ableism. It's really upsetting to see able-bodied people hype it up because it doesn't effect them. If I were to brave going again, I know I'd be in danger of getting hurt and would end up being bed-bound for days afterwards (again). And yes, I did complain at the time, as did countless others. I never got a response.
I'm just frustrated that everyone else's apathy means a huge amount of people wither have to miss out, or else put themselves in harms way to enjoy what everyone else can without another thought. If more people supported our voices, maybe we'd actually see improvements.
