My two cents:
People usually try to avoid violence since someone that thinks the opposite of what you are protesting might think violence is appropriate against you if you use violence. Mind you, this whole concept goes out the window if the otherwise uses violence AND the police do nothing to punish the side that brought violence.
Either way, we all lose either as a victim or as the aggressor.
