Yes, this is so true, but also, neither alone could have achieved their goals. MLK got to present himself as the reasonable moderate because of Malcolm X, but also with only Malcolm X and no MLL, the majority of the populace would have seen the Civil Rights movement as violent disruptors, losing the public.
Really the history books tell us the best strategy is to have a large centralized non-violent movement coordinate with a smaller decentralized group of armed political extremists.
