Yes, this really happened. Yes, someone pointed out that he was friendly. No, I don't care how nice he was. What do I do with the tip money? No clue

What do I do with the tip money?

Better in your hands than his. Dirty money though.

I sure wish we could just refuse these people service

291

u/Geek_X Aug 07 '26

I’m pretty sure you can refuse nazis business as they are not a protected class. Issue is if she’s not the one in charge

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire Aug 07 '26

Fair but based on knowing Naomi works retail I'll bet my bottom dollar that her manager won't let her refuse

u/DarkLanternZBT Aug 07 '26

When I managed, I told my employees if any customer made them uncomfortable they could signal me over with a simple "I need to step out for a minute" and I would take over zero questions asked. And we backed that shit up.

The Dead Kennedys had it right.

u/DazB1ane Aug 07 '26

You were a good manager then

7

u/DarkLanternZBT Aug 07 '26

I was taught by some of the best.

30

u/SaltMarshGoblin Aug 07 '26

That was sweet of you as a manager, but there's a difference between "I do not want to be the one to handle this transaction" and "I want this Nazi to leave the store and not spend his bigoted money here..."

44

u/DarkLanternZBT Aug 07 '26

A big difference, and one entirely out of the control of a front line retail worker or even a store manager in many, many cases.

By giving my employees a clear, integrity-driven promise to have their backs without making a scene or requiring them to explain themselves, as well as simple instructions on how to do so discretely, it gives them some of that agency and control back. It's also important in de-escalation: if that Nazi were a stalker or abuser, or someone looking for the fight / confrontation / scene, having an escape valve gives an employee with little to no training nor responsibility to deal with that - it's simply not fucking fair to ask that - the choice they need to avoid a fight-or-flight-or-freeze, trapped moment.

Besides if anyone gets to show that little shit where the door is, nicely, walk them nicely to it, and make damn sure they know how unwelcome they are, it'll be me.

I remember this one story about a bartender kicking out some SS guy before he even sat down even though he was being civil. When asked the bar tender said if you let one in and tolerate them, then he invites his friends. And then they invite their friends. And before you know it its a Nazi bar. You have to nip it in the bud right away.

The paradox of tolerance in a nutshell

10

u/Grave26 Aug 07 '26

You're damn right. Man I wish punk

5

u/ours Aug 07 '26

And that night, the Punk Faery came to /u/Grave26 and told him: "Oi! Fuck these nazi punks!" and started shredding on its guitar.

100%

u/BodhingJay Aug 07 '26

some managers arent terrible

but Naomi seems like she needlessly tolerates working for terrible managers and feels oddly at home with it

36

u/UnassumingSingleGuy Aug 07 '26

Few people have the luxury to be picky about their employer.

0

u/BodhingJay Aug 07 '26

thats true.. and the fewer who can be, the worse the manager tends to be

14

u/Saikotsu Aug 07 '26

I mean this in the nicest way possible, but that's probably learned behavior from her terrible mother.

Once you get used to people being terrible to you, it almost feels more natural when people treat you poorly.

I imagine that's one of many things she'll need to work through.

5

u/BodhingJay Aug 07 '26

Naomi.. your manager better be kind and stick up for you especially when you deny nazis service. or else the internet will assemble

2

u/Saikotsu Aug 07 '26

Seconding this

5

u/oLord_heal-this-bike Aug 07 '26

Speaking from experience, when you come from a dysfunctional home environment you tend to have a much higher threshold for dysfunctional work environments. You may not see things for what they are because similar behavior was normalized throughout your life by your caregivers. Your baseline of what is considered acceptable treatment is skewed as a result. This is not to say that we are powerless in perpetuity, of course. It's just an explanation for why such things can occur.

1

u/ThatInAHat Aug 07 '26

“Needlessly”

ffs… folks put up with what they have to. And for saying “feels oddly at home about it” well, isn’t a huge chunk of the comic about her emotionally abusive mother?

Baby steps, man. A little empathy ffs.

1

u/BodhingJay Aug 08 '26

does making this observation mean I lack compassion for her? 🫤 i didnt actually mean it that way.. im familiar with the pattern myself.. so i can certainly empathize

1

u/ThatInAHat Aug 08 '26

It was worded in a way that sounded very victim-blaming.

4

u/Gil-galed987 Aug 07 '26

Precisely. Most managers will literally let customers do ANYTHING if it keeps things moving.

1

u/ritokun Aug 07 '26

no company would want to face the backlash of revealing that they won't let their employees not serve nazis, and if the higher ups aren't a company that cares about that and still make you, then they're nazis and you shouldn't work there.

26

u/ajnin919 Aug 07 '26

Considering how she seems to live in Florida they might be a protected class

22

u/AnAbandonedAstronaut Aug 07 '26

Thanks to conservatives, you can reject even protected classes if you say its over religion and its not a protected, required service like housing or a hospital.

Just say Nazi is against your religion.... play their own games.

12

u/crescentmoonrising Aug 07 '26

If you are Jewish, Catholic or a Jehovah's Witness then they are literally against your religion.

Though I doubt most modern Nazis know about hating the second two.

3

u/Fun_Palpitation_4156 Aug 07 '26

Tell that to Nick Fuentes, modern day Catholic Nazi

2

u/crescentmoonrising Aug 07 '26

Well, he thinks the Holocaust never happened so as far as he's concerned, he believes that the Nazis didn't have issues with Catholics.

Actually, why do Holocaust deniers like Hitler? From their point of view, all he achieved was loosing a war.

1

u/Fun_Palpitation_4156 Aug 07 '26

Without any evidence to back up my claim, I feel like most Holocaust deniers don't actually believe that, and just say it never happened because they know there's no defending Hitler to normal people otherwise

1

u/AnAbandonedAstronaut Aug 07 '26

Yup.

Same thing is going on with religion and MAGA.

They act like they believe the lies some people are telling them, because it shifts the responsibility in their minds.

"If I act like it didn't happen, you cant say Im racist for supporting him."

"If I say I'm against immigrants because of things MAGA says, you have to say I was lied to, not that I was racist".

"Well.. I have to hate gay people... my preacher says that the Bible says very clearly that I shouldn't treat gay people like humans."

0

u/LoquaciousEwok Aug 07 '26

If they don’t know to hate you then they won’t hate you though

14

u/Equivalent_Ad5047 Aug 07 '26

NO. Then the issue is that her employer tolerates Nazis! There should be NO public business that thinks knowingly serving Nazis is good for business. If your boss gets pissed, tell them to just imagine the absolute field day local news and online blogs and reviews would have knowing their local coffee spot proudly serves Nazis.

16

u/animemetalhead Aug 07 '26

I kicked a nazi out of our drive-thru back when I worked at Domino's. Guy actually got his mom to call and complain about discrimination and tried to claim he was an 'Odinist'

18

u/JayKazooie Aug 07 '26

Yes, Odin, famously known for his two back to back lightning bolts and his favorite number, 88, for the number of deadly storms he creates every year. Love that guy!

2

u/Unusual-Tangerine984 Aug 07 '26

I know a bunch of people from way back that were Odinist and into Asatru. They are so pissed their symbolism is used by nazis since most of them are pretty much hippies with history degrees.

2

u/yIdontunderstand Aug 07 '26

Imagine being an "odinist" but somehow not understanding about nazis....

Plenty of things and runes you could use that aren't SS flashes... Etc.

1

u/Unusual-Tangerine984 Aug 07 '26

they want to take it all though, that's the problem. The warriors knot is now pretty widely considered a nazi or right wing symbol when it has nothing to do with nazis.

1

u/ThatInAHat Aug 07 '26

Never thought I’d see the day when my Asatru buddy whose patron is Loki gets less side eye and the Odin followers.

1

u/FEARoach Aug 08 '26

Sorry to tell ya, but 'Odinists' are known to be 'folkish' which is a term that comes right from the Nazi handbook. If they were not cool with being considered Nazis they would have just straight up been calling themselves pagans.

Hippies with history degrees should have known better, or they were cool with being connected to the Nazis and just wanted to be treated better.

1

u/Unusual-Tangerine984 Aug 08 '26

Na, they're a subset of wiccans. I know these people and watched them practice, it had nothing to do with nazis.

1

u/SebWanderer Aug 07 '26

I'm curious, how did you know he was a nazi? Was he wearing any nazi symbols or tattoos?

5

u/animemetalhead Aug 07 '26

He had a swastika on his arm with the full eagle and stuff around it. If he'd just worn long sleeves I'd have never known, but I guess he was proud of it or something.

2

u/LunarDogeBoy Aug 07 '26

Maybe he was telling the truth lmao.

1

u/FEARoach Aug 08 '26

The "Odinists" are called 'folkish' by real pagans. They're known to be fucking racists. He told you he was a Nazi in another word for it, lmao.

6

u/Gil-galed987 Aug 07 '26

Right but you're creating a scene and a massive headache for yourself. As someone lower posted, if ppl refuse they should say they feel unsafe.

11

u/ana_log_ue Aug 07 '26

You’d also be creating a scene and a headache for the nazi, which is a good thing. If you have capacity, you should do it. They should have to second guess themselves about everything whenever they’re in public.

0

u/marshal23156 Aug 07 '26

If theyre comfy wearing their tattoos in public then no you arent. Theyre just gonna tell their buddies later about the “crazy bitch” at the gas station.

1

u/ana_log_ue Aug 07 '26

If theyre comfy wearing their tattoos in public

My point exactly - make walking around with visible nazi tattoos fucking uncomfortable. Inconvenience them. Deny them service. At the very least, give them your very best side eye

u/TerrainAlt Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

I sold an art piece to a neighbor (over some beers). During the same conversation I found out he’s a Sandy Hook denier. I threw the money back at him, took my shit back and told him to leave.

Being a sole proprietor has its benefits.

1

u/Obant Aug 08 '26

A business has the right to. They also have the right to fire an employee that does and makes a scene.
