For anyone curious- this can happen due to periods, the iron in the blood sets off the system. Also if you have a different package down there than one would assume you’d have, then that would also set off the system. Just anything out of the norm would set it off.
To my understanding at least.

If it's the kind of scanner I think it is, it just uses microwaves to detect any surface-level abnormalities under your clothes. It doesn't scan through your body like an x-ray, and it most certainly does not react to iron levels. But maybe American airports use super fancy machines that do? I don't know, I haven't gone through an American airport in over a decade.

Its moisture ive been told by a tsa agent.

Can confirm that it's moisture or something along those lines. I have an insulin pump and I've heard that any type of insulin leakage causes problems

Can confirm. It's the wet. Millimeter wave cannot penetrate water so it's like "I dunno there's a thing there". Rainy days suck.

Moisture is correct. I had to walk a couple miles in the rain once before boarding a flight, and the scanner couldn't see through my wet pant legs.

The agent made sure I was just wet, and let me through.

It uses millimeter wave technology. No xrays are used for scanning people. It does scanning the body looking for abnormalities. If you have any liquid on your clothes or if a woman is on her period and is wearing a pad or a period diaper It will alarm because of the bulk. It was the worst when it rained. Everyone would alarm everywhere because they were wet

Okay yah, that's the machine I'm thinking of.

It's America. Of course they use big expensive machines that don't really do anything

I'm guessing terahertz ? It's the wavelength between microwaves and infrared, they go through fabric but not through water, and we're bags of water with fabric around them.

Oh okay, guess I was misinformed with some myth. I heard multiple people say it was a period thing- thats interesting that it detects moisture though! You learn new things everyday.

yeah wtf are people talking about, TSA does not have a gender based scanning system

If the iron in period blood set the machines off those machines would be pretty useless since all blood has iron in it

This sounds like some serious bullshit.

i’ve been told it’s because my pants zipper

Those machines have a vendetta against button flies.

AIT machines don't detect metal. They detect abnormalities from a typical humanshape. Pads and period panties add bulk that triggers them.

From everything I've heard about these machines, they seem completely worthless and a waste of money.

I guess I’m packing more than people would assume bc I’ve gotten a pat down on my groin every time I’ve flown.

1

u/SpeedyBenjerman 29d ago

By "different package" do you mean having a junk switch operation?

6

u/Natural_Devotee 29d ago

Not sure what this individual meant, but I have better tools in my belt than most and frequently get groin flagged by these machines and get my shit felt up with the back of a TSA hand.

3

u/SpeedyBenjerman 29d ago

Im Canadian so I do not typically deal with the TSA, but can we stop with the coded language. Are you saying your penis gets flagged by TSA scanners?

1

u/atmoose 29d ago

Possibly? I get flagged like 90% of the time for my crotch too; although, in my case I think it's my balls. It sucks having to do a pat down every time I fly.

1

u/SpeedyBenjerman 29d ago

That sounds annoying as hell. At least we are now safer knowing your balls wont blow up the plane

1

u/atmoose 29d ago

lol, sure. It is very annoying. It's also rather embarrassing. I'm thankful the one time I flew with somebody else in the past 7 years I got lucky, and didn't get flagged for a pat down.

Your period doesn’t cause more iron to spawn in your blood somehow.
