I used to fly to Saudi Arabia for business and the airport security there was insane. They actually look confused if someone goes through the metal detectors and they don't go off because hardly anyone actually takes anything out before going through and they don't want to be frisking anyone, especially women, so you could probably walk right through with a knife and nobody would blink. Yet despite that, they still make people take off their shoes which are mostly like sandals or simple foot coverings.
This was on the flight to UAE which had much better security before going home to the UK, but it was still a strange experience watching people stream through a security checkpoint with the alarm sounding constantly and nobody paying any attention before a flight to the busiest international airport in the world in Dubai, one of the wealthiest cities in the world.
Yeah but it makes them FEEL safer so it must BE safer right? It cant ALL just be theater right? Because if it was... its possible theyre just trying to scare us into giving up our rights and that cant happen in the freest country on God's green earth right?
Saudi Arabia: “Who are you talking to right now? Who is it you think you see? A man opens his cockpit door and gets hijacked and you think that of me? No. I am the one who Hijacks”
KSA is a land of blaming other people. The only men (and they are all men) in any positions of authority are the ones who have family connections and they sit around all day doing nothing while any actual work is done entirely by immigrants who get kicked out of the country or worse if anything goes wrong and a manager decides they were responsible.
We were supposed to set up some equipment in an office but when we arrived they hadn't installed any electrical cables, something we had been promised was done months before we set off. They showed us receipts, documents confirming that work was completed that were signed off as witnessed by multiple managers, building inspection reports, certificates confirming that the work was up to code, but when you asked them to show you the actual work done they couldn't because it never was. We told them that if it wasn't ready by the end of the week we would leave and they would be billed for wasting our time. We got to sit around for a week and still got paid.
It turned out that the person who had arranged the work to be done originally had been deported for talking back to his manager and nobody else knew what to do, so they went through the documents he normally had signed for similar work, made copies and they signed them all themselves without bringing in anyone to do any of the actual work. Nobody noticed or cared for months until we came to actually need the cables installed. I guarantee that not one of the managers who signed those documents as witnesses will have been reprimanded
